The color of Duane's shirt is perfect for this piece. :-)

His wardrobe person carefully plans his color schemes to coordinate with the music.🤗

Thank you for this! I still remember you playing the entire Gaspard de la Nuit and during the "Scarbo" movement, someone in the audience blurted out, "Into the blessed darkness." It freaked us all out.

I'm glad I didn't hear that; it would have been unnerving!

Beautiful! Ondine is my absolute favorite piece. Ravel truly does water pieces the best! I'd love to see you do Jeux d'Eau or Une Barque sur l'Ocean some time

Thanks for the comments. I've taught those two pieces but have never played them. I'll take a look at them!

Dear Mr. Hulbert! I really like your interpretation of the Ondine. May I can ask what the history is behind your habit of reading from the score? Do you consider yourself always a better sight reader or was it a conscious choice to learn repertoire faster to play more pieces? Best regards from Germany.

My advice for beginners to the piece from studying it and performing it myself is to LEARN THE MELODY FIRST and how to shape it and project it against all the other notes! The melody is often played in the LH and sometimes between the hands. The “melody” is all the eighth notes that you see with phrase marks. Btw, I slaved over that climax and the double notes leading up to it. Those two pages are as difficult as the opening!

I’m currently studying Ondine just for fun. I just finished the 3rd page and so far what I find the hardest is indeed the opening pattern, which is about to show up again at page 4. I’m struggling keeping my hand relaxed through all that repetition. I hope I can pull it off with time, and hopefully without tendinitis lol

Remember my tip: when you play the fast opening section, push the notes FORWARD ever so slightly. Don't pull back towards you. You'll be more relaxed this way. Good luck!

Playing the opening is hard, how do I play it softer and faster without sacrificing one or the other?
@LearnLoveMusic3 жыл бұрын
Here's a tip: Start with your fingers halfway down on the keys so you don't have to lift up very high at all. Stay close! And that will make it softer too and give you more control.

Love these videos, can we get one for Nocturne no 20 in C sharp Minor, or some other Chopin ?

I'll start thinking about another Chopin. Thanks for the suggestion.

great advice. too bad you're going too fast on passages like 9:30 . you can't really appreciate the harmonies
