Before I was born, my parents used to play Ravi Shankar to me. I was born loving this even though Ive never been to India (I'm from Brazil). I'm 40 and listening to Ravi Shankar feels like a safe haven to me. I wish people would enjoy these type of music more, the ones without voice and that makes us just silence ourselves and enjoy the complete present.

I first heard Ravi Shankar on Public Radio in N.Y.C. one night in 1967. I had heard the sitar before, played by George Harrison on Rubber Soul, and had even heard an electric sitar in several Rock songs of the psychedelic ilk. But I had never heard the "real" thing from a true master before. I was transported! Time became irrelevant, and music from 2,000 years ago felt as fresh as any new offering from The Fab Four. I got on the subway, which ran right outside my window in The Bronx, and journeyed down to Greenwich Village, which for a Black kid from Fort Apache was quite an existential journey. I went directly to the source, Bleeker Bob's Village Record Store! For lover's of esoteric music, this was Mecca! It was like stepping into Ali Baba's treasure cave. You felt knee deep in diamonds, rubies, and pearls. You couldn't reach out on either side without touching something rare and precious. Of course they had Ravi Shankar, it was Bleeker Bob's for crying out loud! I bundled my treasure back up to The Bronx, and literally sat with my head between the speakers, imbibing every sweet, eternal note. I saw Ravi play at Lincoln Center, where I worked years later, he was a household name by then, especially after his performance at The Monterey Pop Festival. Bleeker Bob's has been replaced by a Starbuck's! The Villages, both West and East have been gentrified into oblivion, but Ravi Shankar lives on , in his music, and in his two beautiful, talented daughters. Thank you, Ravi for expanding the mind of that 15 year old kid from uptown!

@@akashbhasin788 Thank you, my friend. I recently watched "Monterey Pop" again for the first time in decades. I was surprised at how well most of the performances had stood the test of time. However, the final performance stood out as something truly transcendent. We hear the ethereal tones of sitar, tambura, and tabla. We do not see the source of the music, only the faces and reactions of the people in the crowd. Eyes wide and dreamy, they seem transfixed by something beyond their experience, so new and yet so ancient. Eventually we come to a closeup of Ravi Shankar plucking his beautiful sitar. Tabla and sitar call to each other playfully, while the tambura drones hypnotically in the background. The speed and intensity increase to a level almost painful in it's beauty. The best part though, is the crowd reaction. It is 1967, "The Summer of Love", and these young faces are open and eager for powerful new experience. This is the culmination of the breakthrough from the black and white 1950's into the Technicolor 60's. The funniest sight is seeing now famous musicians sitting there mesmerized with their mouths hanging open. They may have been at the top of the music charts, but for this brief moment they were wide eyed children, sitting at the feet of the master! It is a supreme moment in the history of popular culture. Glorious! All the best to you, mate. Be well and prosper!

John Sampson I have done similar, but not listened as often as you have. However Ravi Shankar is always being rediscovered now and then since the late 60s and early 70s by my wife and I. Perhaps the following needs correction on a comment Master Shankar mentioned when visiting Marin County, California around 1974. It goes something like this -- paraphrased with humor imbedded into it: Master Shankar mentions that, after studying under his tutor for about 10-12 years, his tutor tells him "That is all I can teach you, but if you keep at it, you do show some promise of success".

But may I also recommend, when you have time, to look up other truly great sitarists such as Ust Vilayat Khan who was from a similar generation to Pt Shankar. More recently others like Pt Budhaditya Mukerjee and Ust Shahid Parveez just to name a couple. I am confident if you do than it will open a new horizon for you as to what else is on offer. Off course there are other great masters who play other instruments or are vocalists but you can explore these as you try the others. Best wishes

Even if people are born in india, they still don't realize the beauty of ancient indian philosophy. I am not sure whom to blame, but that's the real sad part. But there is an awakening now. @@vv6533 I live in the US these days and had the opportunity to listen to European Classical from close quarters many orchestra friends here and mom lives in India who is an India classical singer. Most prominent differences: 1. European Classical - Usually involved mass instrumentalists. There are solo artists but legendary pieces are in a big setting. Also, notes are cut or prolonged. The concept of gradually going from one note to another is rare. 2. Indian - Mostly soloists. Most you'll ever see is a tabla player and a tambura player alongside the soloist (so 3, as opposed to 40 in an orchestra or 20 in chamber music...exceptions exist). Also, as in this album you'll see Alaps...taking a note and slowly blending into another note is paramount. Cut or prolongation of same note are rare. Ofcourse all these are my observations.

As we speak (4/18/2020): I am listening (on my HOME COMPUTER;-) to Pandit-ji("*Baba-ji*") Sri Ravi Shankar's (*WHITE*) album, called "*3 Ragas*": (starting with "*Raga Jog*", one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL pieces I have EVER HEARD.;-))) It is SUPREMELY PEACEFUL, and ENERGIZING, at the SAME TIME. It brings PEACE, and HEALING, to my TIRED, and FATIGUED MIND, Heart, BODY, and SOUL.Every time I hear it, I am "*Washed Away*", in the "*Galactic Ocean*", of "*Satchitdananda*": ("*BLISS CONSCIOUSNESS*";-) Finding it, again, was like COMING HOME, AGAIN.;-))) It is MY "*GO-TO*" Music, whenever I am feeling "*Frizzled, and Frazzled*": Which is MOST of the time, lately:-((( So, Pandit-ji ("*Baba-ji*")Sri Ravi Shankar (may he RIP): Has become MY BEST Friend, lately.;-) ("*SELF*-ISOLATING*", in the SF Valley, California). NAMASTE, and LOVE, Light, and *HEALING*, to EVERYONE.

And in our conversation I'm nurturing my vision for her. With our every breath we feel only BHARAT. Bharat is not just a piece of land where people live. It's a prayer. There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The resulting pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see will find something captured that escapes explanation.

SIDDHA & SOUND By Vithal C Nadkarni The Economic Times (Editorial/obituary) Last Updated: Dec 15, 2012, 05:44 AM IST YOUR columnist first saw Pandit Ravi Shankar from the window of a chawl overlooking Grant Road station. The maestro was walking rapidly towards platform one carrying his signature sitar and my father, who was just two years older than the sitarist, pointed him out to me. A few months later, father took me to an impromptu concert held in the apartment below my uncle's flat in Tardeo. He was playing Shri, that most mystical of the ragas much beloved by his Maihar-Senia tradition, which traces its roots back to the legendary singer of Akbar's court, Mian Tansen. I was barely 10, yet I was instantly mesmerised. And I am happy to confess that I have been luxuriating ever since, wallowing really, under the Circe-like spell cast by Ravi Shankar's sitar! Years later, I met the maestro backstage, after I had reviewed some of his performances for The Times of India. So how did he manage to evoke each raga so powerfully, so unerringly, time after time? "I close my eyes and immerse myself in a sort of meditative trance, contemplating constantly on the swarupa and the bhava of each raga as conveyed to me after years of riyaz, or sadhana, by my beloved Guru, Baba Allauddin Khan," he replied without hesitation. This seems more akin to channelling than to mere string-plucking, where the duality of the medium and the message merges to shine forth, radiant and whole, through the messenger. Nada, or Sound, is Brahman in this tradition. Sharangdeva, the Kashmiri polymath at the Devagiri court at Paithan, gave it the other name of chaitanyam or life-force: Divine Nada is the universal soul (vivruttam jagad-atmane), which produces Ananda that first captures and then liberates listeners. A Siddha of that line has become silent. His music lives on. Vithal C Nadkarni (Cosmic Uplink Column) ENDS/ Read more at: economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinion/vedanta/pandit-ravi-shankar-siddha-and-sound/articleshow/17621035.cms?

I saw Ravi Shankar on tour in 1974 with George Harrison in Oakland, CA. My group of friends included my sister's best friend, our two dates and a kid that sat in front of me in Social Studies...when I told him I was going, he said he wanted to go too so I said, "buy a ticket," he ended up having to sit across the venue, my date wasn't happy but I didn't care, the more the merrier. My sister's friend, whispered to me that she didn't know who anyone was. We laughed the rest of the night because she didn't know the Beatle.

Yeah, you see so many people (not mentioning any names here) trying to make their country great by refusing to take influence from other cultures and their people. Every culture has good and bad, the boundaries aren't always very clear but there are instances where other countries have come up with fantastic ways to save a lot of suffering and they've been ignored because the idea is foreign. I think most people want to make their country great, but some do it through isolation which can only lead to stagnation. Others recognise that greatness comes from variation and their country is just a small part of the world. One culture cannot stand strong if there is are no new ideas and cultures to challenge it.

I have been introducing people to North Indian Classical Music (NICM) for the last 50 years. I got my first sitar in 1972. It came from India by ship in a wooden crate that was unloaded at a San Francisco pier. My local library could only find two books in English that were about the sitar. The most important one was, "My Music, My Life" by Ravi Shankar. After a month of looking they located a copy at a library in Los Angeles and borrowed it for me. As a teenager I would hitch-hike over 100 miles to see Pandit-ji in concert, usually every year. When I was 16 I waited in line backstage for hours to pay my respects in person. He took both of my hands in his and, noticing my callouses, he asked if I played sitar. I told him I did. He asked me if I had a guru. I told him I didn't. Even though there were still people waiting to see him, he ushered me into his green room and closed the door. He picked up the sitar he had played that night and said, "At least I can show you the proper playing position." I sat on the floor and he put his sitar in my hands. "No, no, no. You must not hold the neck with your left hand. The front is perpendicular to the floor, and the neck at a 45 degree angle. Yes, that's it. Now, anchor your right thumb here. Like that, yes." I only had 10 minutes with him, but he gave me what he could. As it turns out, that was the only sitar lesson I would ever have. 🙏🕉
