RAW: 75-year-old man tasered by Idaho Springs police talks about incident

It all began with a call for an assault at Michael Clark's apartment building. Clark's next-door neighbor said Clark attacked her, though there's no evidence he ever left his apartment that night.
The police report states that two Idaho Springs police officers spoke with Clark's neighbor and noticed she may have been drunk. Body camera video shows the officers then knocked on Clark's door without announcing themselves as police.
Not knowing who it was, Clark said he grabbed a small novelty sword -- a long ago gift from his brother-in-law -- and answered the door.
The officers told him to put the sword down. He did, but 19 seconds later and without any warning, Officer Nicholas Hanning tasered Clark, setting off a chain of medical events from which Clark is still recovering: A heart attack, a stroke, several seizures, and months in the hospital and physical rehabilitation facilities.
Soon after the incident, Idaho Springs Police fired Hanning. He was initially charged with felony assault but later took a plea to a misdemeanor and faced up to two years in jail. A few weeks ago, a judge sentenced Hanning to two years probation.

First of all the couple lied saying that he not only got out if his apartment but also went in and punched her in the face. But Mr. Clark says he never left his apartment that night. Why would you believe that a drugged up woman's claims are more valid than the sober old man's side of the story, and how do you know he punched her? Just the way you feel that he is lying, couldn't you feel she is lying instead? Is there a hunch, she has a violent criminal past, he has no criminal record, think about that for a second! She could be the one lying as there is no proof he ever left the apartment to begin with. How do you know he punched her, she could be lying!

What a dear man and what a tragedy and travesty of justice. I hope it is reconciled and I hope he heals completely and beyond. His survival and his articulation of his ordeal are impressive and endearing. The journalist did a great interview. It is good to have this exposed to the light of day. No one should be treated this way. He could have died. So sad and brutal.

I spend so much time showing support for cops that I forget that there are just awful cops out there who will assault you and ruin your life over nothing. Most cops drink vodka to sleep at night. They are full blown alchoholics... with a badge. The chief of police doesn't say anything because most of the time they are running an illegal private security business out of the station using tax payer equipment, phones and human recourses while double billing the city.....that's called racketeering. Thank God those body cameras were on. This poor man went through hell. Those videos should be used as examples for police on what NOT to do!!!! The female neighbor seemed unhinged to me throughout the police videos and she certainly was LOUD!! She had to repeatedly be told to calm herself down.

They even listened to her after she threatened to kill him, after they had the audacity to drag him through the hallway and plant the weapon after tasering him and him complying, after he already had a stroke! They damaged his heart and brain, heart attack and a stroke within a two day time period spent in the hospital, and later he had a massive brain bleeds from the medication that was given to him in the hospital that was meant to stop the brain bleeds. Seems like the hospital needs to be sued too, everyone failed this man on so many levels is sickening! I feel for the guy, it's unlikely he'll be able to walk again on his own, after suffering a heart attack and a stroke. If I was him, I'd only want one thing in life at that point - justice.

They were called by a neighbor's 911 call that reported this man punched someone in their face. When police arrived the man answered the door with what they thought was a machete. They ordered him to drop it, he did. But he refused to exit the house when ordered. I am not sure why the officer tased him. The officer did plead guilty.

@@burntorange9394 I agree, this was sick, also the two officers gave the man conflicting orders, one was yelling for him to get on the ground, the other one was yelling for him to freeze. The guy didn't move and they tased him. They can't do that, especially to an old man. I agree with the part that the cops needed to respond to a 911 call saying he hit her, which was most likely a lie. He should be suing the neighbors too, they are equally responsible. I think the old man should have dropped on his knees, but I agree, the taser was unnecessary. I am glad Nicholas Hanning was charged, but last I heard, the judge denied any prosecution to be made against him, so no jail time. I am outraged.

Oh I couldn’t tell if it was the female or male cop. How careless of those two officers. How is an old man a threat to anyone? And why didn’t they get his statement first? If she had no visible injuries and the old man says he was sleeping he would not have been teased! LEOs need to slow down and think hard before going into these situations. Once they assess the scene and see a non threat they need to change their approach.

When he opened the door and greeted the officers, he looked, sounded and acted like a normal, healthy man. Now, he can't spell out his name correctly, complete his sentences and has mentally and physically deteriorated! The original complainant that claimed he assaulted her should be charged as well! A sad outcome to a simple situation! Thank goodness the body cams were on and show the truth!
