After learning more during the past 24 hours: 1. The Dali lost steering (rudder) but the single screw engine was running. The ship was experiencing power outages while underway. 2. Dali was moving forward at 7-8 knots when the exhaust cloud was seen on the video. This was caused by reversing the engine to slow or stop the vessel. 3. Like any single screw vessel it pulled hard to starboard (right hand direction) when thrown into reverse but kept moving forward. Even in reverse a nearly 1,000 ft. container ship will not stop on a dime. The rudder was not available to counteract this pull to starboard. This is what caused the hard right turn toward the pylon. 4. The Dali ran directly into the bridge pylon.

Some people aren't getting the perspective on this. That ship is _not_ moving parallel to the bridge at any point in this video, not even close. You might think that's the side silhouette of the ship in the dark, but that ship is _way_ longer than it is tall. We're seeing it way closer to the front than from the side. From side on, if it were travelling parallel to the bridge, you'd see a silhouette that wouldn't even fit between the pillars at the side of the screen, a silhouette almost as long as between the two central pillars. The ships initial heading here was 141 degrees, i.e. it's heading for the middle of the gap between the two center pillars, to pass under the middle of the bridge. The yaw to starboard when it went of course was just 12 degrees. Also, this version of the video is playing at about 6x the speed this happened in real life.

@gogogojira7 ай бұрын
From the few knowledgeable folks who have already made videos about this: When the ship briefly regained power, it appears the captain reversed thrust. With but one propeller, the reverse thrust will cause the ship to veer, not even accounting for the anchor being dropped on one side of the ship to slow it down. The captain here would have been better off allowing the ship to continue unpowered on its original course rather than trying to slow it down.
@jimmcdevitt60847 ай бұрын
The port side ( left ) bow anchor was dropped to slow the vessel which turned the vessel into the bridge abutment.
@JackRabbittm7 ай бұрын
Well, my guess is that the ship's captain ordered all engines full astern a couple of minutes before impact. When the power started, they saw they were getting dangerously close to the bridge. Full astern means throwing the ship into reverse immediately, usually only used in emergency situations because of an impending impact. The reason I think this is because of the speed at which the ship's stern turned a few seconds before impact. Ships, especially cargo ships, don't usually turn that fast unless they've already been slowed down (in this case, by the full astern order). When they saw how close they were, orders were probably given to turn hard to port (turn right) in order to quickly correct course and navigate under the bridge but sadly the ship ended up turning too fast and it ended up making it collide head on. However, the power failure looks like it started before this footage even began. This is all speculation, though, and we won't know for sure what happened on board until the rescue efforts cease and investigation begins. All we can do as people right now is pray for the people who went into the water if you're religious and keep your thoughts with them if you're not.

The loss of utility power would prevent use of the propulsion controls and probably steering also. When power came back, you can see the main engine come online at full power, probably in Reverse. The torque from the prop will throw the stern to one side. In this case, not the side they needed and it turned into the bridge support. This is commonly used on single engine boats with no bow thrusters to assist docking maneuvers. Since we can't tell from the video what the alignment of the ship was with the proper channel, I assume it was pretty much down the channel and anything that disturbed it was a serious error. Stopping one of these ships in less than a couple of miles on its own power and staying on a heading just won't happen. Depending on how the ship was rigged, loss of utility power may have taken out the steering as well. Rudder control may have been on a hydraulic pump with an electric motor. Doing nothing might have saved the day.

The way the ship seen moving and thick black smoke coming out from the top, it suggest that someone was trying very hard to control it and change the path to avoid the collision but there was not enough time left to avoid this tragic accident.

from what we see in the video we can gather some facts. fact 1. there were no cars or trucks on the bridge, they all crossed safely. fact 2. the construction crew was still up there. they had not left yet when the bridge dropped harder than the world trade center fact 3: they are likely all dead
@jimbobeire7 ай бұрын
no cars or trucks _other than_ the vehicles of the construction crew. 2 of the 8 workers who went in the water actually survived. They were pulled from the water shortly after. The rest if they weren't killed by the fall, crushed by debris or drowned, would have died from hypothermia if not found quickly.

Shortly before the ship turned towards the bridge pillar, the electrical system apparently failed for a few seconds! That's definitely not normal. When the lights came back on, you could see heavy smoke coming from the chimney, as if the engines were being revved up.
@jeffhaggarty98797 ай бұрын
It was likely a fairly big lapse there as the video is really sped up. It appears the problem may have been a bit longer as well as there was no smoke before the big plume so it may have had emergency power for a bit too before things kicked back on. So while it seemed like the lights were on, they may not have had full control for some time there.

Business insider indicated a mayday was issued but it only had 30 minutes from leaving the bay until impact. The mayday may have indeed been engine and power loss. Thing was at the mercy of really strong currents speeding it up, and if the smoke stack was anything to go by they got the engines turned over far far too late to slow down enough. Especially as it seems to have lost power AGAIN during the attempt.

Lastly, we run drills for power outages with the engineers to be able to manually maneuver rudder in these type of events. Granted maybe not enough time to execute manual control before collision.

The policy should be that sufficient tenders be present when ships of this size are passing under such infrastructure. The structure is too valuable, the risk and consequences to the public too high to not have better safety protocols in place. Expense to the shippers be damned.

@@gerardosmi2933 Cmon man this is just uninformed and dramatic.. Do you have ANY experience with ship navigations / working in the maritime industry at all? You can't turn a ship like this quickly, the video is obviously sped up - you can see it slowly rotating into the turn the entire time, from the start of the video (which is normal because ships leave the port of Baltimore by going under this bridge)). They NEVER REGAINED ENGINE POWER after the blackout - the lights coming back on was a backup diesel generator that restored the electrical systems - it DID NOT restore engine power - meaning the "hard turn" that you say happened after the lights go out/ come back on has been happening the whole time, and would have been impossible to make after the lights came back on because the ENGINE NEVER CAME BACK ON and you CAN'T TURN A BIG SHIP THAT FAST. In addition to the foreign crew there was a US Harbor Pilot (and his apprentice) with a decade of experience on the ship communicating about it the whole time, he had the bridge closed before impact and saved lives - this is not a conspiracy, it's just a disaster.
@climbjak77 ай бұрын
It starts the turn normally with the power on (because that is the way you leave the Port of Baltimore, under the bridge) - then the power fails. What do you think happens to a cargo ship that is mid turn when the power fails?

What is this supposed to say? Nothing! The bridge was also not build for the amount and kind of traffic that we have today compared to the 70s … more, heavier, faster etc … It is irrelevant when it was build … older structures are adjusted to modern requirements … to make this pillar safe for such ships would be incredibly expensive and therefore obsolete … in many other heavy duty harbours they avoid building bridge pillars in the water or close to the suitable waterway. There are plenty of possible solutions.

This video should have something to say that it is playing at multiple times the actual real life speed. It makes the ship look faster, and everything else look even more dramatic and unreal than it was. Also the angle makes the ship look like a shorter ship going _parallel_ to the bridge, as many of the commenters have mistakenly believed (as if the ship was heading for the shore at Dundalk, rather than aiming to go under the center of the bridge). Ship was at about 8kts heading 140, and then drifted starboard by about 12 degrees. This video makes the ship look like it was doing much greater speed.
