(RAW) COMPROMISED sweet-gum threatening marsh

The raw unedited video of a sweet-gum that was close to failing and falling into a protected march. As such we were unable to drop anything into that marsh which required us to rig it all back to the yard. Some years ago the half of the tree closest to the house had been removed, so what was left was the half that was spanning out over the marsh.

What I really like about this guy is he does not talk. He just works the tree. I have seen some techniques that we can put to use. There are some areas where I would have hinged or box cut rather than rope down but that is just preference. That is not a hit on this guy. I like his approach and his demeanor, it is authentically real.

Thanks Hindsight being 20/20 there are a few things I would have done slightly differently, but overall I think it went pretty well.

Exactly the same tree I have in my backyard. In Australia, sweet gum is aka Liquidambar. The wood has very high moisture content and is typically very heavy for its volume

Thanks. I have the srt, I definitely like it, just make sure that you get the correct size for you. My only complaint is that the thigh pads tend to slide to the outside.

Good job man when am in the tree and they have to send the rigging line back to you like that every time i like to have then chip the rope onto my climbing line then have them pull down a lil bit on your climbing line to make the rope a lil stable and the rope man can then pull the rigging line up to you cause it follow your climbing line right to you and you don’t have to do anything hopefully I said that right it works really well

Yea I would love for them to do that, but they prefer to tie it on, I have explained it a few times.

Can't speak for him, but in my experience it's not the height that's scary, but the unexpected. The scariest trees I've climbed haven't been the tallest, but compromised medium-sized ones with no safe secondary tree to tie into nearby. I might be biased because I don't have a fear of heights themselves, just a fear of mistakes that can't be recovered from at height.

@@br-dj2tiWhen I was learning, (still am, always will be) I took baby steps up a dying spruce. I would make the effort to stop and look down at the distance below me to really take in the moment, even when I was only 6ft off the ground. When I eventually got 40+ft up, I started feeling kind of skittish but I would do the same thing I did below until the fear passed through me. I would just tell people 3 things - learn how your gear actually works so that you can learn to trust it and when not to trust it (this alone takes out most of the fear factor I think). Desensitize yourself by taking baby steps and acknowledging what's happening, being aware and present. And as with anything worth doing, there's a chance you'll meet your maker regardless of how much experience you have. God bless, have a good day man

Like @arbhorrent said, it's not the height it's something that isn't expected. Anything that is medium-large that is comprised or is funky always gets the stomach churning a bit. Typically I'll tie until something else, but it's not always an option. I don't do anything that I think won't work, and as such I have no problem walking away from a tree if I deem it not safe for me to climb. That doesn't happen a lot, but it has happened a handful of times

@abhorrnet touched on most of it, I'd say trust your gear. It's rated at many more times of force then you could possibly apply to it. As such if you don't do something dumb ie taking a top with your rope in it, tieing into something that will 100%fail after you make a cut, not inspect/maintain it then it'll serve you well. As for if you get injured.... I personally have completed accepted that I could die any given day and I'm at peace with it. Granted I do everything in my power to make it not today, but I know it's something that could happen.
