Raw Gemstones still in rock, found on my new Claim.

Absolutely love the look of raw natural garnets. This claim has great potential to produce some amazing fully formed garnet crystals. You should see the beautiful gemmy red stones I was able to find in this first trip into the claim. Lots more exploration will be required and hopefully the garnet finds just keep getting better and better. I find Gemstone hunting every bit as exciting as gold panning. And I absolutely love finding garnets.

Those black crystals at 15:00 are likely hornblende, very common in garnet bearing metamorphic rock!! In my most recent video I shared a couple boulders with some nice big fans of hornblende, lots of garnet in that area too. Pegmatites do form in metamorphic rock but as intrusions caused by fluids and gasses let off from nearby granites or magma I believe. Awesome finds by the way, garnet has to be one of my favorite minerals😃

Pegmatites are extremely common associated with nearby plutons and formed from ther resudial melt. There they can form pegmatites (large crystal size) or applites (very small crystal size). But pegmatites can also be formed by other tectonis. The Evje-Iveland pegmatite field in south norway consits out of several houndres pegmatite bodies. The most of them formed thru an so called "underplatting" event. In this case the pegmatites formed under special T and P conditions. Many of these bodies also formed garnet during their formation. Thus you can find large garnets within magmatic feldspar without any signs of an metamorphic overprint.

You remind me of ALL of my science teachers over the years. If any of them made a mistake answering a question in class........the very next class they brought it up and corrected themselves. I didn't realize what was happening......at the time. Truth and accuracy were most important. I think there are many people today that could certainly benefit from that way of thinking!!

If you can't get access to somewhere that has garnet sands to sieve, you can always buy garnet sand. It's a common and relatively affordable abrasive, and you can buy it in any quantity you want. Give it a thorough washing and maybe classify it to the size you want before adding it to your tank. My house is filled with rocks and after running out of places to put specimens, I've started displaying them in my fish tank too.

I've done it for snails! Find a spot with local garnets and pan the river sand! You'll end up with just pinkish red sand!

Fun fact from the other side of the continent: Garnets just like this were commercially mined in Connecticut until deposits were found in the Adirondack Mountains. Pea size vs. softball size. Most of it was being crushed into abrasives, so quality was less important than production. Those black longer crystals, I would bet those are tourmaline. Also, Dan in your geology learning journey, try to find yourself a good geologic compass. By measuring the direction and angle of those rock units you can find other exposures or intersections with streams and roads or other interesting rock units. This is typically called strike and dip direction, or dip dip direction. It was definitely one of my favorite parts of Geo undergrad.

1:41 THAT stone in your hand is almost identical to the the one I had found in my child years! I tapped that thing apart with a hammer and screw driver and got over 100 garnets the size of dice. Didn't know what they were when I was kid, only that the multi sided brown rocks were cool. I threw almost all of them away when we had to move to a new house and I am still kicking myself all these years later.

ooh i love those stones, in italy there is a lovely small village, which used those to build roads and stairs and it was super fun to visit. I was studying geology at university and i got to bring home like 10kg of a rock full of garnets. I think my mum has it in the middle of the garden somewhere :)

Soak em for a few days in soapy water and stir, then soak em in white vinegar and stir every day for a few days! Colors will pop!

I went to garnet mountain once, everywhere looked mined. Just a ton of rhyolite slabs. I finally found a garnet it was big, looked like someone shaped it perfect with all the facets. As soon as I got it out of the rhyolite I dropped the garnet in the grass. Never to be seen again

I love painting for gold and if I find some beautiful garnets in the process as they are a lot heavier than some, I will keep them.! You need a weeding gardening pad of closed cell foam on a shoulder sling to sit on. Cold stones to sit on while working will introduce you to close friends in the rear port you never want to meet. ✌

There was an outcropping of Virginia's "Great Garnet Belt" on my grandfather's farm. The schist wasn't very crumbly but would break off in sections, It was also chock full of garnets, the average of which was about 1/2-1" across, but they were poor quality. Every now and then you might break one open to see thick, gemmy flakes of a very nice garnet red. The outer "skin" of the crystals was brownish with tiny flecks of mica in it - only the shape gave it away as anything special. We used to dig around in the outcropping as kids just to see if we could find big ones. Every now and then, there would be one approaching 2" across.

You have some crazy good cranberry claim there Sir.. nice colors. For your viewers, you can use dental metal tools under water to remove and clean the garnet crystals. The steel in the tools are softer than the Garnets so it won't scratch them. Dan that black Kyanite, quartz and garnet blend is really unique. I haven't seen that before.

Back in the mid 1960's, I was in a group of river rafters on the "Big Bend" of the Columbia River in BC (from Golden to Revelstoke). We stopped at a lumber camp near the Bend. A lumberman told me about 1/4 inch red/brown garnet crystals lying loose on the ground nearby. They had wearhered out from a similar schist. I borrowed a rake, shovel and a empty 5 gal bucket. Found the garnets. They were in an inch deep layer. In 15 minutes, I had filled the bucket. Sadly I had to leave it behind because the raft pilot wouldn't allow it on board. The garnet site is now underwater because the river was dammed sometime later.

I live in western North Carolina. Our local rock quarry produces gravel for all our driveways in our area. And we walk the gravel and find the best garnets. I’ve found some that are golf ball size and perfect!!!!

You know, I've been thinking. I think you could make some good money on black garnets too if they were truly black and large enough. There is a demand for jewelry made with black gem stones and a necklace or bracelet or ring made with black garnets would be a beautiful novelty that no one has seen before. Its just an idea, but maybe something to think about. Ask some of your friends, especially those in their twentys or thirtys. I'd be interested in buying some raw stones to experiment with.
