This was a tribute to Motorhead, who often found themselves at the same shows with Sabaton, the band knew Lemmy, Sabatons CURRENT tour manager EDDIE ROCHA was the tour manager for Motorhead, (carrying the portrait of Lemmy, the Surviving Motorhead, MIKKEY DEE, and FILTHY PHIL CAMBELL, members flanking him are in the procession of the fallen, the living stop as the fallen proceed into history. There is a lot of subtlety to unpack in this video, that is why it starts with a double deck bus in front of the Hammersmith (No Sleep till Hammersmith, the Motorhead album 1916 was released on)

Excellent reaction. Lemmy Kilmister wrote "1916" after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme. Sabaton made this a tribute not only to Lemmy but to all the warriors throughout history who left their homes and families to fight, and sometimes die, for their homelands. RIP, you are all missed and appreciated. BTW, "Hun" was what the British called the Germans in WW1.

Throughout school, we're taught about these wars, and we just skim over the casualties like it was nothing. The best thing that Sabaton does is put a face on all these unknown soldiers that, like they said "Nobody remembers our name ". You understand that they're not a statistic, they were people with hopes, dreams, fears. They had families, jobs, friends.

It is a privilege that we hold as the post-war generations to be able to look at everyone as such. Soldiers have to kill that part of humanity within themselves during wartime to be able to stay at least mostly sane until the war is over. If they survive until then, that is. Which is why remembering songs like this is so important when watching world news even now.

This is a brilliantly written song. "Thirst for the Hun, Food for the Gun" either you take it in the war throughout history and "The Hun" being Attilla or it's in the strictly 1916/WW1 meaning which "The Huns" were the Germans and in their "thirst" for defeating Germany, they became casualties aka "Food" for the German guns.

I thought "Hun" meant Hungarians from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who declared war on Serbia, starting WWI. I think thats what it meant initially, but ended up being applied to basically all countries that were part of the Central Powers.

This might've already been said, but the different characters you see in this music video, is also references to some of Sabaton's other songs! Like The Red Baron. Another fun fact for you, is that Sabaton, in 2022, received the "Public Educator Award" from the Swedish Sceptics Association. This is due to the historical accuracy and information they are using for their songs. This is the first time this award has gone to a band! The price usually goes to publishers, authors and etc. J.R.R Tolkien, if you forgot, also fought in the Battle of the Somme.

@@lorenzo_smit Absolutely!! I honestly wish more people would hear the depth behind that statement and understand it. Because when push comes to shove I would like to thing that most people would have that same stance, no matter what their profession or skillset. And the thing that irks me, is that if he were from any country on the other side, he would have been hailed as a hero, but because he was a German, he gets villainized!! Thats why i love this song because it points out the fact that everything isn't always as black and white as it may appear on the surfce.

That song is brilliant. At the time when it came out I had just found out about Fritz Haber and had been reading up on him alot it was fantastic to hear all the nuance in the song. ”So who can tell us what is right or wrong Maths or morality alone?” Love this part because numberd wise more people are alive than dead because of things he invented but poison gas was just an absolutely brutal weapon. ”Where will this lead? What's coming next from your inventions? We wonder where, where does it end? Who can foresee, see what will be?” I think this part might go over most peoples heads but it is absolutely chilling when you understand what they are getting at, Haber was the one that invented zyclon b a pesticide which would be used in the holocaust years after his death, it’s just tragic

Regarding the "Hun" line: "Huns" is what the allied soldiers, especially t he british called the germans in WW I. [I hope you'll forgive a pasted comment, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw Sabaton perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the recent tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was being treated there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

Which also ties into the line "And we added two years to our ages" where it's sung about the boys adding two years to their 16, eager to fight, even before they were able to, making themselves be eighteen on paper, so that they rush into the illusion of glory.

Back then war was taught with glory and overhyped. And adults took advantage of naive kids who wanted adventure, who wanted to be a knight with all the medals. Women would also go to some boys and men who had a decent job already and gave them a white feather to shame them into going. Disgusting. If it’s not nativity, it’s human being shaming others to go into something they do not realise. So disgusting. A ww1 veteran used to visit the graves of two 17 year olds who tried to run home, but executed by their own. The veteran visited them to honour them and ‘talk’ to them, because they were never cowards. He visited the graves every day when he could sometimes with flowers until he died.

This song is about the battle of the Somme as you can tell. But more specifically the young kids 13-17 years old who lied about their ages to join up. But also the sacrifices from all soldiers in all time periods. Also the hun was a reference to what the entente called the Germans during the Great War.

Primo Victoria and Bismarck are my favorites from them. Primo Victoria is about Operation Overlord, another name for the Battle of Normandy that started with D-Day. Bismarck is about Germany's fast battleship, Bismarck, and how he met his end. Would love to see you listen to these!

I fought in Afghanistan and as a soldier knowing my grandfathers past who fought in WW2 he did exactly that he forged his enlistment documents and lied about his age so he could fight knowing his mother would never sign for him to serve! He survived but his older brother never made it home as a tough veteran this song makes me cry every time! As a history buff myself Knox I think you will absolutely love Sabaton even if you don't do more reactions to them listen to them on your own time TRUST ME ON THAT!

So the line, Thirst for the Hun, is a reference to WWI as well, as British soldiers called the Germans "the Hun" because of a speech by Kaiser Wilhelm the second, he'd compared Germans armies to that of attilla, and many laughed about it, right up until jokes stopped being so funny about a coming war.

Thank you for really taking your time with the Sabaton reactions you've done. Like pausing the video to say what's on your mind as it pops up, it makes it feel like I'm watching a proper reaction rather than watching someone listening to a song, which I appreciate a lot. I highly recommend you to slide down the rabbit hole that is Sabbaton because they have so many amazing songs for you to discover. One thing I want to mention is that while the two songs you've listened to so far really touch on the horrors of war, not all of their songs do so. Sabaton believes firmly in never taking a side in whatever conflict they sing about and instead focus on the historical and story telling aspect of it. Some songs will talk about war in a broader aspect, and some songs will focus on certain battles or war heroes and the songs will be sung in the perspective of the particular nations or people involved, no matter the side they were on. The thing I love is that their catalogue of songs is a deep dive into every aspect of war. The heroic deeds of the few, how humanity finds a way to prevail even in the midst of war, the overall horror and inhumanity, all the way to the consequences war has on the people who live to see the end of it. They are unlike any other band I've ever known and I hope you enjoy the ride.

"A thirst for the Hun" is a reference to the name used for the Central Powers in propaganda of the time. Also, the soldiers in 18th century uniforms are Swedish imperial troops of the Carolean dynasty. Check out "A Lifetime of War" by Sabaton for more sadness.

Great reaction to a great band. Love their music. It's like they are trying to make history a fun subject, to grab the interrest of people who normally would not care much for history. Still need to check which of their videos you've done, but there are quite a few informative ones like Soldiers of Heaven I really enjoy. Actually, Sabaton is the reason my kidz come to me for history questions instead of their teachers...😂😂. Keep doing what you're doing an take care brother

Really perceptive reaction! It reminds me of the WWI poem, Dulce et Decorum Est, by Wilfred Owen. "Dulce et Decorum est" is a poem written by Wilfred Owen during World War I, and published posthumously in 1920. Its Latin title is from a verse written by the Roman poet Horace: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. In English, this means "it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country". The poem is one of Owen's most renowned works; it is known for its horrific imagery and its condemnation of war" via wikipedia

When I was an early teen, Sabaton was the thing the "weird" kids listened to (was weird myself, but for video game, movie scores, and whatever my older brother listened to which was anything from metal to hardstyle). Funny thing was that the metal kids listening to Sabbaton were ridiculed by the teachers, but they aced most of history lessons.

Aa for the "A thirst for the Hun" line: "The Hun"was a common name given to German soldiers by British propaganda in WW1, based on a speech delivered by Kaiser Wilhem in July 1900 in front of German troops to be sent to China to quell the Boxer Rebellion: "If you come before the enemy, he will be defeated! No quarter will be given! Prisoners will not be taken! Whoever falls into your hands is forfeited! Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their king Etzel made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, so may the name Germany be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German!"

Sabaton is great. They can make you interested in history, and strangely proud of people from other countries (Nightwitches, The First Soldier, Lady of the Dark, to mention a few). If you are, which I hope to react to more from Sabaton, if there is an animated story video, always watch that one. You should also check out the lead guitarist, Tommy Johansson. He has his own band, Majestica, and a KZbin channel where he does a cover every Friday. He recently did Bohemian Rhapsody, not an easy one to take on.

He went over with 1070 fellow Newfoundlanders. By 8:30am the next morning, on July 2nd 1916, he and only 67 others came back alive. I don’t know why I’m just finding Nasty Knox diving into metal now, fuck yes! 🤘 Sabaton are fkn awesome, very dynamic and powerful, and always tell an amazing story through music. Next time you do a Metal Monday man, gotta check out some Whitechapel, I don’t see them in the playlist! Recommend “When A Demon Defiles A Witch,” you can feel the emotion behind just the song- then the video adds another layer- and if you dig into the story of Phil Bozeman (vocalist) and his childhood and his mother specifically, it’s another layer and brings it all together. Powerful shit. Hope you’re enjoying the metal journey, my man!
