Film at Lincoln Center

7 жыл бұрын

Director Julia Ducournau and actor Garance Marillier discussed their film 'Raw' after its screening in Rendez-Vous with French Cinema at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
When incoming freshman-and lifelong vegetarian-Justine (Garance Marillier) joins her older sister (Ella Rumpf) at a strangely decrepit veterinary college, she seems poised to be the school’s new star pupil. But a hazing ritual in which she’s forced to eat raw meat awakens something primal in Justine: a newfound-and highly disturbing-taste for flesh. The feature debut from Julia Ducournau marks the arrival of a bold new directorial voice, blending blood-spattered body horror, pitch-black comedy, and one of the most dysfunctional sisterly relationships ever depicted on screen into a potent, emotionally resonant coming-of-age nightmare. A Focus Features release.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

Dang, this woman is so intelligent. I love what she has done with such morbid and taboo concepts and how deeply she considered every character, the intricacies of every scene and the physical and primitive nature of the film and what she wanted to convey to the audience. Her thoughtfulness and the seriousness and depth with which she constructed this film is so profound to me. I'm very impressed with the way she speaks and wow, this film really speaks to me and confronts me in so many ways with things I wouldn't usually seek out. It's like BAM, it really spoke to me. Like she said, it wasn't meant to "shock" people as much (or at all) as to show the naked truth and reality behind cannibalism and consumption in human beings, this taboo thing that is a part of humanity that a lot of people aren't ready to be confronted with. I look forward to her future projects and films. I think in many ways she is a genius, and the actors and meticulously thought-out imagery is something I wish we had more of in American cinema. Wow, I found it really hard to convey my thoughts and feelings on this film, it was difficult to put into words haha. I loved it and I love her fearlessness and candidness in her interviews. There, I tried haha. Cheers

9:49 Such a rude person in the audience shouting "What is the point of your movie?! On and on and on". Julia handled that well. And she left! 18:33 "If that angry women would have stuck around, she would have learned that" "I don't think she wanted to learn that" Haha!

Superlative insights all round. Raw was shown on television late the other night. I wouldn't have bothered if it was just a zombie film, I watched to the end because I was emotionally invested in Justine's character blossoming. It's a similar hit to watching a vengeful antihero settle a score. Garance Marillier is the new Clint Eastwood.

Has anyone seen the 2000 Canadian movie Ginger Snaps?. There are some similarities with this one. Twos sisters, the sexual and monstrous awakening of one the sisters at the same time. The good sister has a crush (a young man who help her). The bad sister kills the young man, etc. etc. I wonder if Julia use it as inspiration. Great movie any way, a lot of symbolism and very deep observations of the human behavior. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger_Snaps_(film)

Who the heck fainted? The gore is very very mild for 2017. I wouldn't even consider this a horror film. Just a somewhat generic coming to age story. Agree with director. the boyfriend being gay was crucial. and the key point is the difference in choices the two sister makes. And the speech by the father confirms it. Then again isn't that the point of every film? Choice people choices.

So please, show more humility.

She understands English. But like any normal human being she probably just doesn’t feel comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. She’s also very young so she has plenty of time to learn English throughout her career. And it’s not like she needs to make it in Hollywood, the French have a pretty big movie industry of their own.
