Reliving The War is a weekly show that takes an in-depth look at the WWF vs WCW “Monday Night War”. With WWF Raw airing on the USA Network and WCW Nitro airing live on TNT every Monday night, fans would choose which show to watch. This resulted in a TV ratings battle between the two companies. This time period in pro wrestling saw record viewers tuning in every week to see the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, the nWo, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Goldberg and Sting.
This week the WWF presents Survivor Series 1997 from Montreal, Quebec. Bret Hart is not in attendance for Raw however Shawn Michaels is, and the Heartbreak Kid takes on Ken Shamrock in the Raw is War main event. Also this week Goldust breaks some shocking news to Marlena as the WWF plan on evolving the Goldust gimmick for the attitude era.
On WCW Nitro Perry Saturn makes his in-ring Nitro debut when he faces Disco Inferno in a TV title match, The Steiner Brothers take on the Public Enemy in a Philidelphia Street Fight, and Scott Hall goes behind Eric Bischoff's back to give Chris Jericho a big win on TNT.

If WCW had booking comparable to WWF and knew how to get stars over. Instead of keeping the same guys on top. WCW could have easily won the war. WCWs roster was light years ahead of WWFs, all through the war. However they had no idea how to book them.

WCW didn't have a midcard - half the roster were main eventers. WWF and their supporters love to pretend that WCW couldn't make stars or booked them poorly but anyone who actually watched WCW knows that's totally false. That revisionist story is just a cover for the reality that the WWF's roster was 95% jobbers in comparison to WCW's. McMahon got lucky, because if it wasn't for AOL TimeWarner coming along to totally mess up Turner with their disastrous merger/takeover, there's no way WCW would have been sold off.

Days Left Until Bret Hart Leaves The WWF: 6 This is it: The Final Countdown. Bret Hart is now 100% going to WCW after signing the contract at the end of October 31, but this now means that Bret has "reasonable creative control" over the last 30 days of his WWE run. There's really nothing else left to be said here, outside of me wondering if Rick Steiner's headgear actually helped prevent him from taking even worse damage from that table botch on Nitro.

It’s interesting, on November 3rd the screwjob plan was not even a thing yet. Every credible source I’ve ever came across said the first serious discussion of screwing Bret happened on either November 5th or 6th.
@Obscusion2
@Obscusion2 2 жыл бұрын
@@cyrus2546 Yeah, but the situation had long been established as being a problem before then. Vince found himself stuck in a corner that he, Shawn, & Bret had all created themselves, and I think it shows how "last resort" the screwjob truly was for Vince as he didn't even consider it a possibility until just days before, after Jim Cornette brought it up in a fit of annoyed anger at the situation during a meeting. That's probably why Bret didn't think it'd actually happen, despite others warning him that night. He likely thought that, if he was going to get screwed, Vince would need more time to properly plan such a thing out.
@cyrus2546
@cyrus2546 2 жыл бұрын
@@Obscusion2 Yeah I’ve read every bit of information on this subject from all credible sources. Bret’s biggest mistake was even letting it get to that point. On October 12th Bret told Shawn that they should bury the hatchet & he’s willing to put Shawn over in Montreal. As a response Shawn told Bret “I really appreciate that but I wouldn’t do the same for you.” After that Bret should’ve told Vince that he won’t do business with Shawn at all. He should’ve told Vince put me in the main event with anyone else and I’ll drop the championship. If you keep the main event as me vs Shawn I won’t show up and I’ll tell all the fans what happened.” Bret held ALL the cards. By November of 1997 he had already fulfilled his contractual obligations to the WWF. He had worked over 300 days when his contract only required 270. He could have no showed the PPV and been fully within his legal rights. The problem was that Bret was too good of a guy, had too much integrity and it cost him everything. Bret should’ve realized over the 14 years that he worked for Vince that Vince has no integrity. Ultimate Warrior knew what a piece of trash Vince was and forced Vince to pay him the $500,000 Warrior was owed. Warrior wrote Vince a letter and threatened to no-show SummerSlam 1991 if he didn’t get his money. Guess what? It worked. Vince paid Warrior. Bret wasn’t cutthroat enough. Vince, HBK, and HHH were. That’s why Bret got screwed.

Hearing the little behind the scenes info on Hall putting over Jericho just shows what a class act Hall was. He understood how talented Jericho was and he wanted him to get a bit of a boost with a victory on Nitro. Knowing very well that a loss wouldn't matter much to him in the scheme of things. If more of this happened around this time in the WCW, it certainly would have helped them that much more.

Survivor Series 97 is the indisputable start of the Attitude Era for 4 reasons. 1. The first WWF Attitude promo ever (“I know what you’re thinking, I’m just a wrestler…try lacing my boots”which ironically included Bret. 2. The first time we ever see the WWF scratch logo. 3. The first time we ever hear D-Generation X’s theme song during a promo for the December 7th PPV. 4. The seeds of the Mr. McMahon character were planted that night in Montreal. Those seeds would grow into the greatest rivalry in WWF history, Austin vs McMahon.

With Vince McMahon leaving the announcing table I know he started announcing somewhere in the 70s 1977 for sure but I liked when he was paired with Jesse the Body Ventura. Second best announce team to JR and The King

Hall was so flippin' awesome. He put people over so much and so many times. It's like it was the love of the game more than any kind of personal gain that he did these things (I don't know for sure obviously, but man is it cool of him).

I guess you do the job that your boss asks you to do, but I always thought it was odd that they saddled Rick Rude with Michaels and Helmsley considering how close he was to Bret Hart. His dual appearance on Raw and Nitro is one of my favourite moments of the Monday Night War and his no so veiled promo on the Screwjob is awesome.

He comes out the night after Survivor Series and kind of buries Bret. He said “Shawn Michaels will never ever say I quit”. However this was a ruse to avoid any suspicion of being loyal to Bret until he had a guarantee by Bischoff that there was a job waiting for him in WCW. Once he got that guarantee he bailed and absolutely buried Shawn Michaels on Nitro right in front if Kevin Nash.

It's so neat seeing the build up to these ppv's. I started watching in 1998, so I missed all of the amazing 1997 moments completely and have only seen the ppv's. It's so nice seeing things in context.

Phenomenal, as usual, thank you Bio-Man. I love seeing how this seriesbhas evolved over time. You have become so much more comfortable with every video you put out. Watching the series from start to where we are now is like night and day. The comedy seem to come alot more fluently and the "in" jokes are so good. I was st work the other day and just popped off with "it's kick or be kicking around here" people looked at me like wtf is wrong with this idiot. To put it simply, thank you for all you do and I'm so incredibly impressed with the progress you have made it your presentation and delivery of all your work. I respect you Bio-Man.

I keep forgetting to talk about how much I love every video on this channel, and how "Reliving the War" literally makes every Thursday better by default. Thanks again! (Also, there are 2 things I have to get off my chest: 1. Why the hell does Yuji Nagata's entrance gear look like he's glued two rubber floormats for your car together into a vest? 2. Vince Russo, why did he never book an "Ahmed Johnson's Endzone on a Pole" match?)

I love this show so damn much. Always loved wrestling, but couldn't watch until Smackdown on UPN. So watching this just is amazing getting the whole recap and getting info on matches and wrestlers and events I didn't know about then or even now. Thank you for being awesome and I look forward to more.
