Reliving The War takes a look at the Monday Night Wars on a weekly basis. WWF Raw is War on USA Network and WCW Monday Nitro on TNT went head-to-head every Monday night in a TV ratings battle, leading to both companies putting on some of very memorable matches and moments. This series aims to cover every single match and promo during the whole Monday Night War.
This week on the WWF channel Shawn Michaels says he hasn't slept much since Survivor Series anad he decided to reach out to Bret Hart. According to HBK, Bret has agreed to appear on Raw and the men have agreed to settle their differences tonight in the ring. Elsewhere on the show Road Dog and Billy Gunn get a shot at the Legion of Doom's tag team titles, and Triple H learns what's in store for him at In Your House during a Sgt. Slaughter promo.
WCW just finished up their World War 3 PPV and the company now looks forward to Starrcade '97, their most succesful show in company history. Hollywood Hogan grants anyone in the building a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, and The Giant wants to take Hogan up on his generous offer.

The debut of the New Age Outlaws signature entrance music, as well as their first of many historic tag team title reigns began here. Rumor has it that the LOD did not want to do the job and drop the titles at the DX PPV, so they decided to job on this episode of Raw.

I would agree with Mick Foley also. It must have been frustrating knowing your company had the better product for sometime. However losing in the ratings week after week. I would say the problems started before Starrcade 97. As the product with Hogan and the NWO on top was already stale by this point. These are opinions I have formed through watching reliving the war.

@@martynodonnell8467 sure. I think the problem started with the short reign of Luger. He was so over, and a change for a couple of month would have been good. And another problem was DDP. Especially considering how relatively short-lived the original faction (HBK, HGH, Chyna) actually was... less than a year in total, before Shawn left. Then HGH started the DX army with the Outlaws and X-Pac, which definitely was a legendary stable in their own right... but they still can't hold a candle to the original D-X!

This is almost embarrassing to remember but I recall how serious the war got in school. We had people picking sides and joining factions. I was watching this when it aired and the Austin - Rock sequence was hilarious af. Just flawless. Rock and Austin in late 1997 is the feud that catapulted Austin into the stratosphere. Rock himself looked fabulous coming out of it but for The Rock, it wasn't til a year later where he *really* shotgunned, when his feud with Mankind took off after the whole Corporate angle, positioning him for the real blow-off at WMXV and Backlash, which then lead to the Night After Backlash where they just gave in and faceturned him.

Austin was already over before feuding with Rock, but this was definitely the feud that saved Rock's career. I'm a little ahead and let's just say Rock was getting more heel heat than HBK was.
@chibipoe

Yeah, Austin had been in and out of the main event scene for a while and in the wake of reclaiming the IC Title at Survivor Series, just went to the top and didn't look back. Rock got to tag along and this feud played out perfectly for what was to come. And yeah, heel Rock throughout 98 picked up how to play the crowd like a fiddle to a degree only a few could ever manage.

I know what I am about to say is in hindsight. But, it's a shame IMO the Bret Hart and Vince McMahon weren't able to come to agreement that allowed Bret to stay in the WWE. WCW so poorly misused him. I think there could of been some good Hart Foundation vs DX stories if he had stayed with WWE.
@cyrus2546
@cyrus2546 2 жыл бұрын
If Bret stayed maybe HBK doesn’t face Taker in a casket match at Royal Rumble, which means he doesn’t have to retire in 98, which keeps him and Bret in the Attitude Era, which changes everything. It’s crazy how much different things would be if one or both stayed in the WWF. By March 98 both were gone.

I honestly never knew about Jim Neidhart's post-Survivor Series appearances, so seeing him here & teased for next week was a shocker. All you ever hear about it Owen's return at the DX: IYH PPV, so it's interesting & honestly a little weird to see Jim be the actual first person from the Hart Foundation to do anything with DX after the Screwjob. As for Nitro, it really does look like WCW was just resting on their laurels by this point & felt untouchable. Little wonder why the WWF would eventually break the streak after Mania XIV now.

How did they get Jim Neidhart to go along with this? Was he not pissed about the Montreal Screwjob. It’s one thing to continue working there like Owen did because he didn’t think he could get out of his contract, but if Anvil was upset about Survivor Series, why did he agree to this storyline? He should have said “that doesn’t work for me, brother!”

He embarrassed himself. Bret was disgusted with him, he wrote about in the Calgary Sun in December 1997.

I think Curt Henning was headlining this late in the year as, Hulk is saving his appearances after burning the bulk of them off at the start of the year... It's always nice to have A title involved in main events when THE title isn't defended...?

You can see that RAW was producing a better show despite WCW still beating them in the ratings in late 97. WCW wins Early to mid 97. Nash removing the Sting Mask and smiling was funny to me lol

I freaking love these videos. Keep up the good work. I was 14 at this time during the war, the perfect age to be a wrestling fan. I had an nWo shirt while everyone at my school would have DX shirts. I wasn't watching Raw at this time because TSN (in Canada) just picked up Nitro the day after Survivor Series. It's cool to see what Raw was actually doing, and that they were putting out a superior product vs Nitro.

I absolutely love that you play Disco Inferno’s entrance music the entire time you review his matches. It’s become my favourite part of these reviews. I only wish WCW had done this for real during Disco’s matches, it would have been so much better than New Jack wrestling with Natural Born Killers playing the entire time, lol

7:49 lol I just remembered when I was a kid watching WCW I was super confused by Scott Steiners transformation into Big Poppa Pump. I must have missed him turning on Rick and joining the NWO, I legit thought they were two different people.
