The name “Devil’s Trill” comes from a dream Tartini had, where the devil appeared before him and asked to be his servant and granted all he desired. Tartini decided to give the devil his violin to test his skill, whereupon the devil proceeded to play the most wondrous melody Tartini had ever heard. Upon awakening, he frantically tried to write down the melody he had just heard but could not for the life of him remember how it went. He often lamented this fact throughout his entire life. The devil's blessing is often a curse in disguise.
In Tartini’s own words:
“How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain!”
- Broadcast live at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 17th February 2019 with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Us poor young people with the standing tickets will always give standing ovations :D But jokes aside, at least here in vienna, i have witnessed it several times. Lugansky, wang, schiff, trifonov... They never fail to get all the able bodied audience on their feet. I thjnk the longest applause i experienced was after Lugansky performed Rach 3. That was a solid 10 minutes i think

I was like 13 years old when I first heard this sonata and had a tremendous impact in me, it became one of my all time favorites. I feel that hearing this interpreted by Ray is one of the best gifts life has ever given me. Ray is undoubtedly an amazing virtuoso, but what makes him so special is that, besides being a wonderful, wonderful person, he plays from his very core and soul. He reaches for your heart and either squeezes it or holds it in the most beautiful way.

Kreisler's edition, so this is the 20th century version. Plus the fact that it was written in the 700s doesn't mean it has to be played in that period's style, that's a common stereotype artists nowadays know to avoid in many case. If you want baroque's renditions look for them, don't expect every artist's vision to coincide with your historical knowledge

This kind of repertoire and chamber setting turns out to be perfect for Ray. Outstanding musicianship and sound production here, and more controlled mannerisms than usual. Reminiscent of the great ensemble playing by Gidon Kremer and his Baltica group. I greatly look forward to more of this kind of playing from Ray.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎻he will inspire a whole new breed /gen ... talented/good looking....rather see younger gen blowing up on tik tok for this .. than whatever else they do! Excited to see what is to come for classical music in the future. 2015 was such an epic year too! Massive for so many good things/manifesting and in general, lots of love all around back then! Take me back ! So that when I was listening to classical then when studying (probably would have found this much sooner if not that same year) I was going to UNI that I didn't end up making a wrong choice in who I surrounded myself with and have been working my way back there in a sense now - ever since. And not even drugs or bad choices...lol just me giving and helping and caring too much/ forgetting what I love or who I was.... I digress.

It´s so beautiful that brings tears to your eyes, I can´t stop listening to it, listening to everything Ray Chen plays and does. I do not live in Europe or USA, or Australia, all I have are the videos he uploads, so I honestly hope he continues doing it, most of the simple humans in the world just can admire him through videos. So unfair.

After listening to this extraordinary performance, I need to share that Ray looks just like my dad who passed at age 26, a young and promising Chinese-Japanese violinist and conductor. Just wanted to express how much meaning it added to the extreme beauty of this performance.

That description, it makes me remember the time I heard a very beautiful melody in a dream. I woke up and it was still in my mind...but it just disappeared the moment I touched my violin. I couldn't remember it anymore, it was just there a second ago, but I just can't seem to remember it.

For anyone interested, this is a translation of the Dutch at the end of the video (just because the narrator calls Ray a beast tbh): Violin player Ray Chen and the Devil's Trill sonata by Giuseppe Tartini, arranged for violin and string orchestra, and the string orchestra was here the Amsterdam Sinfonietta lead by concert master Candida Thompson. *You need to be a bit of a beast to play this piece like this.* Ray Chen, who by now has been upstairs, up the stairs, and already down the stairs, two, three steps at a time, and he reports to the ensemble again. I will now reveal that you will hear some more about this soloist, Ray Chen, together with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
