Between the cheering and the booing there was never more noise in a baseball game when Richie Allen was at the plate in Connie Mack Stadium in Philadephia.

If only players voted, Dick Allen would have been a Hall of Famer over a quarter century ago.

Bests sport headline in Chicago that year. In August the sox edged into first place on an Allen hr. "Allen's Socks put Allyn's Sox Into First Place".... John Allyn was the White Sox owner in 1972.

Gaylord Perry was 15-1 going into that game. He had a very average second half of the year. Chuck Tanner was a genius. Took a very average Sox team within 5 1/2 games of the As . 1972 was the first of 3 in a row world series. And Dick Allen came within a few batting percentage points of the triple crown. Awesome player. 1st player to sign a 3 year $225,000 contact...this was before free agency

Damn right he deserves HOF enshrinement Saw him play as a teenager in 72 at Comiskey. He smoked a homerun to dead center bleachers which was over 445 feet as painted on the bricks back then. This was before the modern analytics now but would be a screamer . .

I love the fact they no longer count, or act as if they believe, what many of us saw with their own eyes before analytics. It in fact was 445 to dead center at Comiskey, in those days. I remember Jim Rice, the year he hit 46 home runs) hitting two triples off of that centerfield wall. We all saw Reggie's homer, in Detroit, during the '71 All Star game. There were balls hit by Ted Williams, Norm Cash, Lou Gehrig, etc. that cleared to roof of that stadium. Why can't they get computer estimates, based upon the known dimensions, on some of those shots? As is with the various halls of fame and quickly evolving games, if the hall doesn't call you within a few years, you get lost to the next generation's inflated, for various reasons, numbers. It happened to Santo, it happened to Snake Stabler, it's already happened to Cliff Branch, if he ever gets in. Honor these guys while they are alive, and already deserving. It's a damn shame that this crap still goes on.

1972 was an incredible year. Remember, the Sox lost 106 games 2 years earlier. No one went to the games. In 1970 they had an attendance of less than 500,000 for the year. Makes the As of this year look like sell outs. Harry Carey broadcasting drunk and shirtless from center field a few times in 1972.
