I read the singularity is near when it first came out , and feel we are 3-5 years away from things going crazy. For me I’ll know it’s here when scarcity is solved and all diseases are cured. Praying for Michael J Fox and everyone else afflicted with currently incurable disease

Extremely interesting times indeed. I read the Singularity is Near back in the day too, and was thoroughly persuaded by his arguments. Admittedly though, after so many years of the AI Winter I eventually started having my doubts, so it was satisfying and relieving when things started going crazy with the relatively recent onset of the AI Spring started by OpenAI’s release of ChatGTP, and AI now being put in every new device in tech shows, amazing new AIs like Sora, and all the knowledge jobs that are now being done better by LLMs, etc. The rate of progress over the last year alone is nuts.

In a world of exponential growth, there will be overestimation of the near future, and underestimation of the relatively distant future of 10 years or more. There will be no major changes in the next few years, but major changes will occur in the next 10 years.

The dangling carrot needs to be sold as enticing. Desiring to be symbiotic with AI and allow it to control thoughts, feelings and behavior may be the sign of already being cybernetic. An element of being human is free will and choice, it's fascinating watching those who have lost theirs.

It should be called Moore's Law, because he's the guy who first noticed the pattern.

Missing the point. It's not a dismissal of Moore, it's just a different metric as the underlying cause is decoupled from the phenomenon noted by Moore. Moore's law was specifically in regard to transistors.

I feel like I just watched a really bad kids tv show. On a serious note: his comment about most people not liking their jobs and AI will free them from work … nice … what are they supposed to eat? The answer cannot be UBI - no self respecting human wants to live on welfare regardless of how it’s marketed.
@rleclaire8711 ай бұрын
What you're forgetting is that the world is going to change and people just won't have economic value. So it doesn't really matter what we want, we'll be thrown into existential crisis and having to rethink the purpose of life. And we will.

There’s zero evidence that he’s “full of himself”. Sure of his ideas, yeah, I see that, but that’s not synonymous with what you’re implying. It seems to me like you’re resorting to ad hominem attacks to cope with your own discomfort at the current and growing torrent of evidence that major, psychologically-disruptive changes are happening faster than anyone - other than Kurzweil - expected. We’re already seeing things with AI’s like Chat GPT that people like you would have assumed what either decades away or would never happen at all. i.e. Copium. You’re welcome to tender another explanation though? Perhaps you’re living under a rock or something? Either way a lone insult is not a counter argument.
