My first trip to ltaly visiting a friend's family. La nonna kept refilling my plate, as a well brought up kiwi l kept emptying it and as a well brought up ltalian she kept refilling it. I had no idea of the cultural difference but, remember desperately whispering to my ltalian speaking friend, "how do I make her stop?". Learned my first ltalian sentence, "basta così grazie". Still remember their wonderful hospitality. The second time l went l spent 20 years living there and finally learned the only way to stop people refilling your plate is to leave a little bit. Also, if la mamma of your friend says "prende un altro due" don't fall for it, cos you're getting another plateful of spaghetti.

funny story about Italian food. So, I am a Jewish guy. I grew up with Jewish guys and Italian guys. And we literally had two guys who were half Italian and half Jewish. One of those guys, his Italian Dad did some studio work on a Frank Valli album. Anyway, so I go over my Italian friend Jerry's house. And his mom had just made her famous manicotti. This stuff was amazing. She made it for the family, but she decided to serve me a piece. Jerry was in the other room. I am eating this fantastic manicotti. Jerry comes in and asks his mom for a piece. His mom says, "No, Jerry, none for you." Jerry looks at his mom and says, "You are giving Sam my own mother's manicotti, but I can't get any??? His mom looks him dead in the eye and says, "you can get my manicotti when you get straight A's on your report card, like Sam just did!!!"
