If you want to hear his true singing song you should listen to his song titled Everything Is Beautiful. Also another funny song titled The Streak.

Try living in a old 1800s antebellum home. We live in one in Canton Ms they kept a casket in a glass case. It scared a lot of people. There was always something strange going on there was I think 10 bed rooms 4 baths. A huge house. But was a run down dump. Only had fire places to keep us warm . But me and my friends would hang around the mausoleum room where the casket was and try and make as much noise as we could to wake up that dead. One day I think we did we was jumping up and down yelling and all the sudden the door slammed the smoke detector flew across the room back then. If you could afford one it was huge like bigger than a serving platter. It was hot but it turned cold enough we was breathing smoke. We never that again,😮😂

The older generations didn't treat death as a taboo the way some of us today do. For them it was normal to show respect for the dead. Even today some families will have wakes that go all night with the body and coffin in the living room, or at least the Urn and the deceased's best picture (most folks tend to go with cremation these days).

Its true, they used to do this (Particularly in the South). Many houses have a room referred to as a parlor, and those rooms always had double doors. The double doors made room to get the coffin in and out of the room. Its also how the term "funeral parlor" got started. At least, thats how it was told to me. :)

The last time I "sat up with the dead" was 1989 when my husband's grandmother die. She was laid out at the church instead of at home. This was southeastern Kentucky.

Just found this, but when i was a child in the early 70's I was about 7 years old my great grandmother passed the family set up with her in her house when she passed. So this really did happen.

We didn't be a funeral home built in my town till the mid 90's so as a kid I remember sitting up with the dead. So this is actually my favorite Ray Stevens song, most likely because I can relate to this weird situation that most people today actually wonder if it even happened or not.😹

Sitting up with the dead is called a Wake, it’s still common with Native Americans, but they’re usually held at the funeral home now but in the home is not unheard of. Too, this is why it’s said that old historical houses are haunted.

My dad told me about a long-ago relative who died sitting against a wall. The mortician put a stone on his chest to hold him down. The stone shifted that night, and the deceased relative sitting up with him went straight through a window. I'm glad I never had to do that

Way back when, before this time period, the reason for sitting up with the dead was to keep rats away from the corpse.

If you live way out of society and it’s hard to drive the they have had a diener, a morgue worker, is responsible for cleaning and handling a corpse before embalming. Some of the steps involved in preparing a body for embalming include at the house
