I am 81 years old and I have sat up with the dead. That is the way we did it back then down in the Southland. You brought them home and gathered around.

Ray Stevens is STILL making music. He Just released "Since Bubba Changed His Name To Charlene," but my favorite by him (that no one reacts to) is "Taylor Swift is Stalking Me." 😂😂

Ray Stevens is STILL performing in his mid 80s... He has his own small theater in Nashville called "CabaRay"... He even has a tv show that airs his shows from the theater.... He used to have a much larger theater in Branson, but he close it down years ago... Ray (Or one of his staff) has also been known to visit channels who react to his videos too, and will often drop a line or two in comment sections saying thank you, or sometimes even give behind the scenes stories about the song and/or video...

Just so you know, sitting up with the dead actually was a thing. But I live in rural Kentucky and when I was a little kid in the late 80's early 90's we would sit up with the dead. Thankfully there was finally a funeral home built in the town closest to us (still a 30 minute drive) in the mid 90's so sitting up with the dead was no longer needed. So the fact that I can actually relate to the experience might explain why Sitting Up With The Dead is my favorite Ray Stevens song.😂

In the late 90’s me and my family were booking out of Florida ahead of a hurricane and we wound up in the middle of Mississippi about three in the morning it was dark, cloudy, with lightning all over behind us and we had to stop. I got out in the dark fog with the trees leaning over us and the Spanish moss hanging down. I finished what needed done, jumped in the car and told my wife let’s get out of here. After we were going again she asked me if everything was okay and I told her yes but I can definitely see why the people down here believe in ghosts. A couple of hours later we pulled out from under the storm front and it was a nice bright full moon with no clouds.

The first time I ever saw this video was the night before my great-uncle Fred's funeral. Sad as I was sitting next to my dad at the service, I couldn't help but sit there trying not to laugh. It didn't help that I was heavily pregnant at the time and probably especially emotional. My dad kept asking what was wrong with me, and I finally had to tell him that I sat through the whole service expecting Uncle Fred to sit up, and it was his own fault for showing me that video the night before. Now Uncle Fred was quite a joker, and usually would have been the first person in the family trying to get you to laugh if you were crying, so I hope he forgave me for slipping into a little bit of laughter thinking about that. (Not that I didn't do a bit of crying too that day) Uncle Freddie would have been cracking jokes himself if he could...I know he would have.

In the early days, the main reason for sitting up with the dead was to keep the rats away from the corpse.
