Lol makes sense. If I remember correctly, a friend got Mom and Dad a Ray Stevens tape in the late 90's (I was probably about 3), and for some reason we ended up leaving it behind at Grandma's house, but for many years up until I was a teenager, we would watch it just about every time we came over there. Eventually Grandma's VCR broke sometime in the late 2000's, and when she got rid of that, she donated her VHS tapes, including the Ray Stevens tape. Oh well, good thing there's KZbin.

What Ray Stevens sang about sitting up with the dead is true. I grew up in the South and I was in the 8th grade when my dad's aunt died. They had her body in a casket in her and my dad's uncle's house. I visited their house many times when I was growing up and it was a creepy feeling knowing that I have to sit up with a dead person in a house.

The tradition comes from the days before medical signs told you there was no life. So, you had to sit up with the body just in case the person wasn't truly dead. So, it's where the term "parlor" & "living room" came from

My parents would tell us stories about “sitting up with the dead” as they did it OFTEN growing up and even in their married 20s and 30s. The last time THEY sat up with a dead someone, it was a great uncle and it was 1965!!! So we particularly LOVED this song and it never ever failed to make my Mother laugh like a child. This moment, as I’m typing, I’m leaving my Mother’s memorial service. We are going to eat dinner at my aunt’s farm and I will play this for my family. They will love it. Ty Ray Stevens.

I haven't thought about this in years. When I was younger, my grandpa and grandma gave me a collection of Ray Stevens music videos on a VHS, and I laughed so hard. A lot of the jokes became long-running jokes in my family over time. My grandpa (papa) sadly passed away in 2003, and grandma now has stage 2 dementia. Ray Stevens will always remind me of them and the good moments my family managed to find between all the messed up trauma. Ray also reminds me of my dad (and weirdly looked just like him) during his rare good moments and the humor he has. Funny how one man singing funny songs brought some light into such a troubled family like we had.

Nicest celebrity I have ever met, a true gentleman! I was working on his street and visited his house in Nashville. I didn't know who's house it was, didnt matter, part of my work. I left my work phone number like I did for everyone. A few days later my phone rang. Answered the phone, first thing i here is "Hello, this is Ray Stevens". Being focused on work I gave my normal introduction and description of some work that needed to be done on his property. He thanked me, gave me a time we could meet. After hanging up, it hit me who I had just talked too, one of my musical heroes. I lost it, instantly star struck. A few days later we meet up, after I showed him what needed to be done. After that he showed me around the house he was having remodeled and chatted with me for a hour, and shook my hand. Only time I broke my normal professional bearing that used for all celebrities and artists, I told him I was huge fan and had grown up on his music. One the greatest moments of my life.

My Mom sat up with Uncle Jim on her honeymoon week in 1940's. Later a lady died in the bed next to her and the young nurse was nervous about cleaning up the bed the woman passed in and mom ended up comforting her. Mom took it as part of life and knew her own pension plan was soon and she was ready and was not afraid. My last funeral in a home viewing was my grandmother viewed in my uncle's house in 1957.

I actually still have the VHS tape that this video is on, as well as the VHS tapes for his live concert in Branson, Missouri and the Amazing Rolling Revue (or however it's spelled). The music video tape belonged to my parents, I got the tape of the concert at a Goodwill and my mamaw bought the tape for the A.R.R. and let me have it. In a couple months, I'll be 21. As a kid, I was scared of this video, but I loved the song, and nowadays I love the video. My mom got these tapes out of a building near my grandma's house, where we stored a bunch of our stuff before we moved to Montana for a few years. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them. So next time my brother and I spend a few days at our grandma's house, we're gonna watch them to make sure they still work. I used to tell this as a camp story when I worked at camps. I had memorized it as a very young kid when my dad used to play the VHS tape over and over, so years later, needing a story right away with no preparation, I just started saying all the words of this song (I didn't sing it), changing the gender references to female since it's first-person and I'm a girl. The kids were young enough not to know it was an old song, and they thought it was a real story. Some of the kids were really scared of this story!

Man it took so long for me to find this again, I remember visiting family or going on road trips with my Dad, he got the Ray Stevens box set as a gift for Christmas and we both loved listening to the songs, years later and I'm living in another part of the state and he's living near the capital and I just remembered looking at something, I don't remember what and one of the Ray Stevens songs came up, I didn't remember all the words but I felt that pang of nostalgia and desperately seeking out the name of who made sung these songs. Finally I was like"was it Ray Stevens?.. yes it was Ray Stevens, I remember now!" And I couldn't be any happier seeing this again.

My grandma told me once that sitting up with the dead was very common. She was born in 1925 and passed away 2 years ago. She told me she did a lot of it with multiple relatives during the depression. That’s one thing From the old days that I don’t want to come back!

i have this one on my ray stevens dvd,man i fell over laughing when i saw it.i remember him from when i was a kid.my daughter heard harry the hairy ape and fell in love with the song.i remember the first time the streak came out and when the first time someone streaked a live baskeball game on tv in 1975 wearing only a pair of tennis shoes.man those were the good days.

A few years a good friend died. I sat with his family thru it. When his funeral was going on, the lights went out for a few seconds. Everybody laughed b/c they knew he did it. He was a prankster & loved a good joke. The world's a bit more lonely now.
