One of the things that made this show so intriguing was the fact that a lot of the characters have history going back to their childhoods. Limehouse remembers Raylan when he was a little boy, Dicky Bennett limps because Raylan broke his leg during a high school baseball game, Raylan was Ava's high school crush. Raylan and constable Bob were in high school together until Bob was sent away after beating another kid senseless in a psychotic rage (a tidbit that foreshadows a lot of Bob's behavior in the present) and of course Boyd and Raylan dug coal together when they were 19 year-olds. It makes their interactions in the present more poignant.

My FAVORITE detail about this show is that one of the first things Boyd says to Raylan in episode 1 is that Raylan wears his hat high on his head. And then, in the very end (SPOILER ALERT) when Boone aims at him square in the center of the hat, Raylan survives because the hat was so high on his head. Absolutely incredible foreshadowing.

The fuck lol you think as many times as Boone and Raylan ran into each other he wouldn't have noticed that especially considering how many times Boone brought up the hat? Come on. Actually Walton was only supposed to be in pilot and die on avas floor. They showed the pilot to focus group who LOVED boyd as much as raylan and the 2 of them together most of all. So they decided to go back and get boyd (keep in mind this is awhile after he filmed as they had to do post production) who had scheduled other projects. They had to rush him back to reshoot end and add ambulance scene. Then notice the plot has boyd in hospital and jail for half of first season? He had to squeeze in those few hospital/jail scenes between his other work (he was under contract). Finally his other gig finished and that is when boyd got out of jail But yeah, in the tv show the creator originally had raylan kill him at avas table.
