Justified on FX is a modern day western that simply rocks. If you haven't seen it I suggest a binge watch ASAP. In this scene Marshal Raylan Givens finds a man who's been threatening to kill him. Co-star is Shelley Hennig, who was Miss Teen Louisiana 2004.

I headcanon that Raylan only says his lines about an ambulance/coroner for purposes of creating a record, and that on the 911 operator side it goes something like this: Two 911 operators are chilling, talking about something happening local at the moment when the line rings. Operator #1: "911, what's your emergency?" Raylan: "This is Deputy - " Operator #1 punches a key, sending GPS tracking data on the incoming call to ambulance and coroner for immediate dispatch, and glances at #2, tapping her chin. Operator #2 picks up a full quart jar (loose twenty dollar bills) with a label that says "Raylan just shot someone". Operator #3 sees the action, and pulls out the book with dates and times, notes the bets, motions to operators #7 and #15. They pump fists in victory while the others stifle groans. Ten minutes later, the book is being filled out again with dates, times, and number of targets for the next shooting, and the jar is once more full.

To me, this scene confirms what I always believed about Raylan: that he never wanted to live forever anyway and that he wanted to go out in a gunfight, straight up. Ironically, this is also what gave him the edge in a gunfight: he didn't really care about the outcome. As John Wayne said in The Shootist, "it isn't always being fast, or even accurate that counts... it's being willing."
@BrassBashers
@BrassBashers 2 жыл бұрын
A Hollywood take from Wyatt Earp: "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. You must be slow in a hurry."
@Malt454
@Malt454 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrassBashers - Yeah, Little Bill (Gene Hackman) in Unforgiven had basically the same take, that speed at the cost of accuracy is a mistake. Yet in his faceoff with English Bob, it came down to willingness... even though English Bob couldn't be sure that the gun he was being offered was loaded... which SHOULD be a big factor in terms of willingness. No doubt Little Bill would have shot English Bob and was, pretty obviously, preparing to do so, but not without cause, so maybe English Bob should have known the gun was loaded... even though he later seemed surprised to find out that it actually was. "You were right not to take it, Bob. I would have killed ya". I think it could be argued that the same kind of point about willingness is made in the same film's final saloon shootout; Bill Munny was up against a lot of guns, but only one real willing gunman (Little Bill). It ended the way it did partly because of luck, but mostly because the majority of men in that gunfight never belonged there.

A "cop show" is a term for any show that is focused on a character that is involved in law enforcement. He is a federal law enforcement agent, with the U.S. Marshal Services... which does in fact make him a bonified officer of the law.... aka a "cop".... but not a cop in the sense of being your average (local) police officer, that is employed by a local city, or county (Sheriff), or municipal, or even at the state level.... but a "federal" officer of the law, or federal cop. So YES, he is a cop. Don't try to split hairs or argue semantics, when you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Also, agents of the FBI, can also be considered federal cops or law enforcement officers... but they are on the high-end of the cop hierarchy. And there are also other federal agencies that perform the function of a "cop" or law enforcement officer, such as the ATF, the NSA, State Police/Troopers, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and even the U.S. Forest Service.... are all cops or officers of the law (just not your average local city or county cop.... but still, ALL are 'cops').

One thing I appreciate about Raylan's shooting style is just how damn thorough the man is. Two to the chest, one to the head and *still* makes sure to kick the gun away from the man's very obvious corpse just the same. It's a very realistic level of paranoia for a man who kills for a living, and hits much closer to home than the comparatively carefree attitudes of most other gunslingers as depicted in media. He's incredibly confident in his dialogue, but absolutely no-nonsense and takes no chances once the guns are actually drawn. Very cool.

The sound is consistent across shots, which doesn't mean anything because we don't know if they're the same caliber... but typically Hollywood makes the bad guys shots sound weaker than the good guy's LOL. Seeing as he must have encountered Louisville cops, I really can't answer that question. I think the writers, like most of us at the time, didn't know how bad things were. Raylan isn't a racist, that's not this story. He just dislikes gun thugs on general principle, don't matter what color they are. That's why he didn't just pull out his gun and shoot the guy on sight, then plant a gun if there wasn't one already there, which of course there was. It was a really good show. It had nothing at all to do with reality. Like basically any show that involves quick draws. Including Gunsmoke (now that show had some first-rate writing, but genre is genre). Quickdraw McGraw, now that was real. People put on masks and hit each other with guitars all the time. Well, more often than black man sends a cop a video where he's holding a basketball, to let him know "I'm gonna kill you." Because seriously. it's not that much work for him to get shot if he wants it. Or if he doesn't.
