One of the best Brazilian goalkeepers in history, Taffarel's successor in the national team, from the mid-nineties and much of the following decade. He had size, he was agile, confident, serious and quite good on penalties. With Brazil he won the world championship in 2002 and the Copa América in 1999 and with Milan he won an Italian league, two European Cups and an Italian Cup, mainly. Among other trophies in Brazil, the Copa Libertadores in 1997 stands out.

Let's not forget that he was a part of Galatasaray's golden generation that became the first (and only) Turkish club to ever win the major European silverwares (the UEFA Cup in 2000), along with the likes of Gheorghe Hagi, Hakan Sukur, etc. Edit: Apologize for small confusion. For those who don't know, Dida was considered the best Goalkeeper in Brazil back in 1993, while he played for Vitória, a mid/lower club in Brazil. After this, he was considered a legend by 2 brazilian football giants, Cruzeiro and Corinthians. After this, he played 300 times for Milan and won the Champions twice. He's a living legend.

There was a popular movie in Italy during the years of AC Milan dominance where the new coach of the team was doing a role call when first meeting the players, and he put Dida as a striker, "because he's Brasilian" 😂 At the time, Dida was definitely the first time i ever saw a black goalie. Brasilian players were the most common foreigners in Serie A, but the really popular ones were all strikers or midfielders (Ronaldo, Adriano, Rivaldo, Kaká...), so it was a surprise for 9 year old me when i first saw Dida. But man, the guy spoke with facts. Those 4 years of total dominance, even shaming lord Buffon for a long while. I'll never forget those. He was the reason why i played goalkeeper for all my years of youth football. Thanks, Dida. You'll forever be our true number 1 🙏

@@RaymarFootball I'm 52, also born and raised in Brazil, and while I knew Barbosa was unfairly persecuted for what happened in 1950, I also never heard of that leading to prejudice against black goalkeepers in general. I'm not saying it didn't/doesn't happen, merely that it's not something I ever heard being discussed. I remember debates about who should be the national team's first goalkeeper in 2002, but they were all based on experience, style, and numbers. At first, I was upset that Marcos was chosen simply because I didn't like the club he played for. I would have preferred either Dida or Ceni (oh, wouldn't it be cool if Ceni had scored a goal in the World Cup?), but Saint Marcos did an amazing job, I can't complain.

@@Samson-h6l I know that opinions are subjective, so there's no real answer to who's better between Dida and Buffon. Having grown up watching both in their prime, I'll tend towards agreeing with the other guy that Dida was slightly better than Buffon in terms of peak ability. For a short few years back then, I would probably have picked Dida over Buffon.
@Samson-h6l14 күн бұрын
@@beno1129 Buffon's fee was the record for a keeper for two decades. He saw off a truly exceptional generation of Italian keepers by 20 years old. He was consistency personified for decades, and he and Casillas (wonderful keeper, little bit overrated in my opinion) dominated keeper awards for a generation. The body of work is phenomenal. In my lifetime I think Buffon and Oliver Kahn are in a class of their own. They have the CVs. I take your point on opinions, and I would make the following comparison. Is Leo Messi the greatest footballer ever? The weight of achievements make it so. Is he the best footballer I have seen? Paradoxically, I would say no. Brazilian Ronaldo of the late 1990's holds that distinction, and that is a hill I will die on. Finally, with tongue firmly in cheek, Christian Abbiati never took Buffon's place.
@beno112914 күн бұрын
@@Samson-h6l I agree with you about 1990s Ronaldo, and that's kind of my point about Dida. For a brief moment in time, I would have picked him over Buffon. But overall along the length of their careers, of course I'd go with Buffon. God point about Abbiati, lol. It does say a lot about Buffon that in an era of Abbiati, Cudicini, Toldo, etc, he still remained the undisputed Italy goalie.

I am a Brazilian born in 1975. As the majority of my countrymen, I grew up loving football and I remember Dida very well because of his stunning performance in one state final, where he saved 2 penalty kicks from legend Raí in that game. However, contrary to what the video states, I never read, saw or heard anything about black goalkeepers being prevented from playing for major teams or the national selecao. As a matter of fact, Barbosa was hardly mentioned outside of the 1950 world cup context (he was deemed the culprit of Brazil's defeat) and there were no mentions of his so-called "legacy" onto goalkeepers. Of course, I'm not blaming the video creator, but I wonder what sources were used for that claim.
