Fun fact: When John Terry missed the game winning penalty in the 2008 UCL final, it took him 18 MONTHS before he wanted to take one again. Imagine what Karius went through. Glad he’s still grinding and being positive, don’t stop guys 💪💯♥️

A striker can miss 99 easy shots in front of the goal but if he scores 1 he's a hero. A goalie or defender can have 99 on the line saves but if he messes up just once, he's a villain. Sports sometimes isn't fair. Offense always gets the glory and defense usually gets all the blame.

Even as a Madrid supporter during that match I felt for Karius. It takes a lot out of you when you get humiliated like that by the public and the press. The fact that he didn’t quit playing and is continuously training to improve himself mentally and physically - is testament to this young man’s mental fortitude. He was too young to handle all that then, but he has crawled out of that pit and hopefully would redeem himself

Being a keeper is such a mental game. After the game you’ll remember your saves, but at night when you try to sleep you’ll remember your mistakes. It’s been years and I still remember my worst game like it was yesterday. Made a mistake leading to the first goal and my confidence was suddenly gone. I made another mistake that luckily was saved by a defender but then the opponents fans started screaming that I was “shook”, to “go after me” hahah. Their fans started chanting my name, long and drawn out, looking back it’s hilarious but at the time I was completely numb, just wanting the game to end as soon as possible. I CANNOT IMAGINE what it was like for Karius. 100% would give him PTSD, and his symptoms add up. It’s a game, but an experience like that will change a man. I hope he gets to a good team with a chance to redeem himself, it’s the only way he will overcome this and move on with his life. Wish him all the best.

I remember watching that final live, and being a fan of Zidane’s was obviously delighted that Madrid won. But I’ve played Goalkeeper for my High School team, and I felt terrible for Karius. I had no idea of what he went through after that, but I’m very glad he’s finally gotten over the psychological trauma and working on trying to get back to top level football. I really hope he makes it. I will be following his journey and rooting for him! Who knows, if he finally makes it back, it would make for a fantastic redemption story!!

This was a hard watch. Undoubtedly he suffered physically and mentally in the CL Final, but it felt like afterwards even after we signed Alisson we never tried to rehabilitate him in the side as a backup - there’s definitely guilt there at the attitude of blame towards him for our loss. I’m sad for him, sad that it ended this way, sad that we didn’t try harder to support him after that match - in the lead up to the final, he was good.

I've seen the yips happen in person. There was a pitcher on my high school's baseball team who was good enough that people were talking about the MLB someday. But in the state semifinal his junior year, he got lit up by the other team. After that, it really was like he forgot how to pitch. His senior year was really bad in terms of on-field performance, and we never heard about him in baseball again. It broke him. Think about how much lower the stakes were in that kid's situation, and the damage it did to *his* career prospects. Now imagine that happening to you on a world stage. That is frightening.

Look what can happen when a goaly thas one mistake and if keeper has a word class match 89min and on the 90 min a striker who had an average or bad match scores he gets praised the most and gets man of the match and everyone directly forget the performance from the goaly. People underestimate how valuable psychologists are. I think all top level athletes or clubs should employ one, just as they personally employ personal trainers or chefs As a psychologist i'd make him recall the events, process through any trauma and his view of it and then ground him in reality by showing him top class keepers making similar mistakes. The message here is 'its not the end of the world, even the best makes mistakes". As for his confidence on the pitch, its simple, visualizations and recall of his past glories. Best way to feel confidence in a situation is to remember your successes in similar situations.

I'd say like 11 or 10, I was a rising star in my new football club, this could result in me playing normal matches for the football club once i became an adult, but one match haunted me to my core. It was against a small mediocre team which I should of won, but what happened is that the ball flew and hit my face while defending. Which caused me to lose focus, and I let my team down in a very important match. From then on, I moved to a much smaller club, and now I'm regaining my talent. Even if we rule out the impact from the injury, he made 1 mistake, not 2, the one that led to the 3rd goal. The 1st, wasn't a goalkeeping mistake, it's what's called "a moment of blindness" and it happens in every sport or activity, where someone of much higher level makes a bad decision which you wouldn't even rarely see at much lower lvls. Chess fans are aware of this, where there have been occasions were GM's, even strong GM's, even World Champions(!!) missed moves like "takes Queen for nothing" or "checkmate in 1 move" and not while in time pressure! Unfortunately, that 1st goal + the 3rd goal meant Klopp couldn't risk keeping him in the club and it impacted his psychology so much that practically ended his career at that lvl.

Confidence is so important as a goalkeeper and getting it back isn't as easy as for players on other positions. Casillas' story shows it too. Iker was the best goalkeepers on the world for years, but then Mourinho bullied him and accused him of being a mole, that turned some fans against him. This took a big toll on Iker's confidence. As a big Real Madrid fan I saw that his mistakes at the end of his career in Real Madrid aren't a result of him getting old, but because of lack of confidence.

Even though i am happy that my favorite Club Real Madrid won that year, there's a part of me that's sympathized with Loris Karius. What sad is that his team mates most of them didn't even comforted him in his most devastating time. I know he can bounce back sooner.

Imagine getting a concussion, not being able to focus, makes a mistake because of that, lose confidence, make another mistake that anyone could make while already having a concussion, a loss in confidence and then get emotionally abused by fans for those mistakes and then neglected as an option at goalkeeper. Anyone would crumble under those circumstances, I hope he can make a comeback. And i how he does better for himself.

I didn’t know he had a concussion. Even though I didn’t know, I always said everyone makes mistakes. Super sad that this affected him this way and he was never the same again. Hope he makes a comeback.

I remember before the 2018 UCL final watching Karius, he actually had nice reflexes but positioning in goal was his biggest flaw since the start (I immediately noticed that, as an italian I'm a huge Buffon fan who both had insane reflexes and positioning). I still thought he could become a pretty good keeper if he managed to overcome that flaw but, sadly, fate didn't have the same thought.

i wish karius had played a little longer so that people wouldnt have lost faith and be toxic towards him like for example messi, even if he misses a penalty to lose the game in a final he wouldnt get hate cuz he proved himself, wish karius also had some more play time so that the fans wouldnt have done that to him

Great video, and great channel. Karius really got clobbered in the head with a cheap shot, but he kept playing through what must have been terrible pain... and he's still fighting to improve. That's a champion. Thanks for great instruction on the great sport of football, and for drawing out a great life lesson from a great keeper.

As a Man United fan but also a goalkeeper, I really do feel sorry for this man. The amount of abuse and hate that this guy got after that Final (even from the Liverpool fans) makes me sad I’m Glad that he is doing a lot better now and using the pain and emotional scars to make him stronger, both Physically and Mentally ⚽️🧤🥅🔥

Snapped my back at the gym yesterday after doing some squats with weight I would do regularly.. It affected my emotions badly and I was irrational to the people around me, even feeling like I should give up.. This video is so helpful and really tells a strong message

In 1999 Martin Palermo missed 3 Penalty‘s in one game for Argentina. 10 years later he scored a 90+ min goal to take them to the World Cup. Stranger things have happened

I remember Jerzy Dudek’s blunder against Man Utd, where Liverpool lost that match, and it haunted him for monts or myb years, but he finally found his redemption when he helped Liverpool won that famous 2005 champions league final against AC Milan, where he made some heroic saves. I hope Karius will have a chance to redeem himself in the future. As a Liverpool fans, I trully wish him the best.

Were those the heroic saves where he was about a metre off the line for every single milan penalty??? What a farce!

Jerzy Dudek replaced famous Ed de Goeij at Feyenoord back in '97. His first matches in eredivisie weren't high quality. But during the first Champions League match against Juventus he got 5 behind him. People were thinking wtf. What is this for abomination replacement for legend De Goeij??? Well eventually he stayed for years and won a championship and supercup title.

Oh man this is so shocking. I saw that CL final and my only reaction was, "dam Benzema is such a winner, how did he have the instinct to be there and capitalize with such fast reflexes." Sure, a goalie mistake, but not that big a deal. I had no idea about the concussion and ensuing fallout that Karius suffered, that is so unfair.

Me too back in 2018, i criticized & laughed at Karius performance & mistakes. But when i heard he was seriously traumatized by that -- i felt heartbroken for him And this video made me realized that people deserve a 2nd chance -- we make mistakes that's why we are human
