A striker can miss 99 easy shots in front of the goal but if he scores 1 he's a hero. A goalie or defender can have 99 on the line saves but if he messes up just once, he's a villain. Sports sometimes isn't fair. Offense always gets the glory and defense usually gets all the blame.

Being a keeper is such a mental game. After the game you’ll remember your saves, but at night when you try to sleep you’ll remember your mistakes. It’s been years and I still remember my worst game like it was yesterday. Made a mistake leading to the first goal and my confidence was suddenly gone. I made another mistake that luckily was saved by a defender but then the opponents fans started screaming that I was “shook”, to “go after me” hahah. Their fans started chanting my name, long and drawn out, looking back it’s hilarious but at the time I was completely numb, just wanting the game to end as soon as possible. I CANNOT IMAGINE what it was like for Karius. 100% would give him PTSD, and his symptoms add up. It’s a game, but an experience like that will change a man. I hope he gets to a good team with a chance to redeem himself, it’s the only way he will overcome this and move on with his life. Wish him all the best.

This is why goalkeeping is the most difficult position to play on field it's also the most underrated position from the 11 on field. Look what can happen when a goaly thas one mistake and if keeper has a word class match 89min and on the 90 min a striker who had an average or bad match scores he gets praised the most and gets man of the match and everyone directly forget the performance from the goaly. Most underrated and underappreciated position in the game.

What an amazing video! Are you doing more psychological football videos? My son is a young academy player and the only thing I talk to him about is the mental health and strength. Not to care about what anyone else thinks. He’s an amazing striker and if he misses a penalty he forgets about it after one minute! It takes A LOT of hard work
@KingsguardRP2 жыл бұрын
People underestimate how valuable psychologists are. I think all top level athletes or clubs should employ one, just as they personally employ personal trainers or chefs As a psychologist i'd make him recall the events, process through any trauma and his view of it and then ground him in reality by showing him top class keepers making similar mistakes. The message here is 'its not the end of the world, even the best makes mistakes". As for his confidence on the pitch, its simple, visualizations and recall of his past glories. Best way to feel confidence in a situation is to remember your successes in similar situations.

I've had days such as Karious, I am a goalkeeper for a small youth Bahraini football club, and I've gotten humiliated like this before, when I was young. I'd say like 11 or 10, I was a rising star in my new football club, this could result in me playing normal matches for the football club once i became an adult, but one match haunted me to my core. It was against a small mediocre team which I should of won, but what happened is that the ball flew and hit my face while defending. Which caused me to lose focus, and I let my team down in a very important match. From then on, I moved to a much smaller club, and now I'm regaining my talent. Even if we rule out the impact from the injury, he made 1 mistake, not 2, the one that led to the 3rd goal. The 1st, wasn't a goalkeeping mistake, it's what's called "a moment of blindness" and it happens in every sport or activity, where someone of much higher level makes a bad decision which you wouldn't even rarely see at much lower lvls. Chess fans are aware of this, where there have been occasions were GM's, even strong GM's, even World Champions(!!) missed moves like "takes Queen for nothing" or "checkmate in 1 move" and not while in time pressure! Unfortunately, that 1st goal + the 3rd goal meant Klopp couldn't risk keeping him in the club and it impacted his psychology so much that practically ended his career at that lvl.

Confidence is so important as a goalkeeper and getting it back isn't as easy as for players on other positions. Casillas' story shows it too. Iker was the best goalkeepers on the world for years, but then Mourinho bullied him and accused him of being a mole, that turned some fans against him. This took a big toll on Iker's confidence. As a big Real Madrid fan I saw that his mistakes at the end of his career in Real Madrid aren't a result of him getting old, but because of lack of confidence.

I used to be good defender but once my friend challenged me and made me emotionally weak and brought his own team whose 3-4 players were already playing at national level, then I was too nervous and got humiliated . After that I became villian and they blamed me for everything until this year tournament which really made me weak for 2 years. Then I changed my position to goalie and yes it worked out . With that friend in my team we won the cup again by me saving 3 penalties in a row. And the interesting thing it was the same team that humiliated us 2 years ago. So stay strong guys.
