Raymond Lewenthal (Toccata alla Scarlatti)

Does it sound "old"? Sounds can be deceiving. The late great pianist Raymond Lewenthal (1923-1988) wrote this little homage to Scarlatti in 1975. Filled with all the trinkets that make the original master's music so colorful, this work cleverly allows itself to be harmonically exploratory while giving the listener the sensation of remaining in familiar territory. the piece is written in 5/8, just to mix things up a bit.
