Hi Ray, just discovered you, nice job. I came late to Nikon because of cost but happy to have come up through film years with Olympus, Rollei and then, when digital hit, I was intrigued to buy into Nikon since everyone was unloading their film cameras and there were loads of good deals to be had. So I fulfilled some dreams/desires and picked up a Leica M4P rig, and a Nikkormat. That started a chain reaction lol... my first digital camera was the Fujifilm S5 (a nikon body w a Fuji brain) and liked the idea that I could buy lenses for it and also use them on the Nikkormat... which lead to S range finder cameras and three F3s and a slew of analog nikkei lenses, all of which I use today on my D750, Z6II. Long story... but I have always wondered what it is about Nikon image quality that admirers like. You mentioned in this video your dedication to the brand based on the image quality, etc... wonder if you could do a spot on what you and others feel is the Nikon look that keeps them coming back. I know loads of other photogs (non-Nikon) that are unduly critical without ever saying what it is they don't like about Nikon or that inspires them to slag the brand when it has been a core player from the start and continues to do something right lol I think Nikon is kicking butt at the moment... what's not to dislike?

Hi David. Well, we do know a lot of the slagging is in service to FUD. it's reared its head again with this development. My first "real" digital camera was the 6MP Fujifilm FinePix S2 (2003). Great camera with that interesting Super CCD diagonal configuration and "interpolation" to 12MP. And a nice image to boot. That's a good suggestion (re why we like Nikon IQ), which I'll take on board.

Excellent video Ray. Some great thoughts, and the production was top drawer. Lovely lighting! Very exciting times, for sure, for us long-time Nikon users. I don't think we're going to see too much change to Nikon's cameras over the coming years, but it does make sense for Nikon to first introduce a range of cinema lenses as a way of easing themselves into the world of cinema. Once film productions start using Red cameras with Nikon lenses, they will start to accept Nikon, and look at the mirrorless cameras as b-cams etc. Similar to Sony. Well, that's my humble opinion, anyway. Cheers!

great video and the actual composition and lighting of the video was really well done! glad this video was recommended, subbing 👏 also with this move it's gotten me to really consider a Nikon/red down the line when I was likely not going with either (not that I disliked either but just had been on the Canon side at the beginning of my camera journey, and I wasn't too keen on RED's customer service reputation). But Nikon's made a great move imo!

This is as big a move as when Nikon created the first DSLR to have video recording. The most interesting thing will be what they will do concerning broadcast cameras.

Sony owns a small stake in Tamron, I don’t think they would let that happen. Nikon is doing great in the lens market and by opening up their mount, they will be more than fine, especially with this latest acquisition.

I can't speak for Nikon or the so-called "Alliance" but I'm thinking that the existing Z-mount with its amazing flange distance / diameter of 16mm and 55mm, that's where the advantage lies in terms of lens design opportunity, as I mentioned.

Yep. That didn't come out right (of my mouth, I mean). Since, as a FCP user I don't use N-RAW, ProRes is still my go-to (in 4.1K with the Z8/Z9). It'll be interesting to see what turns up in Nikon/RED cinema and Nikon hybrids going forward.
