I have this exact same setup and noticed an 10x speed improvement in my CaptureOne photo editing. I can now even edit Sony-A7R4 61mpx RAWs without stuttering (previously multi-format exports of such RAWs took 40s, now 4s). Very happy with the eGPU upgrade and also regret money spent on previous RAM (32gb) upgrade that only brought marginal speed gains to my MacMini i5 6core 3Ghz machine.

Guarda io uso questa egpu con il mio Mac Pro 2013 che ha la tb2 e non ho visto colli di bottiglia importanti. Ho fatto un video dove comparo le 3 tipologie di thunderbolt ed il risultato è che per gaming e video editing la differenza tra tb2 e 3 non è evidente. Sicuramente la tb1 perde. Peró al momento è il discorso egpu che è bloccato da Mac OS. Questa egpu ha un metal score di 40.000 ca sia su tb3 che su tb2 ma interna su Windows o Mac Pro viaggia a 70.000 quindi io penso non vogliano ottimizzarla troppo.

Not correct I said to run purge wrangler if your Mac doesn’t have thunderbolt 3 port (tb2 or 1). I didn’t test boot camp but you don’t need purge wrangler for that

Didn't understand the connections for the Thunderbolt cable. We connect eGPU to external display and they External Display to the MacBook?

You can connect it in 2 distinct ways: 1 connect the egpu to thunderbolt 3 of the Mac and the display to the egpu. In this way you will get better framerate for gaming 2 connect the egpu to thunderbolt 3 of the Mac and the display to another thunderbolt 3 of the Mac. This will help you with rough power for video editing but the macbook needs to have a dedicated gpu. In this way one gpu drives the display and the egpu makes the heavy lifting for rendering and exporting.

@@bevinmathew YEAH not sure about that game in particular but in general your games will perform better FPS if directly hooked up to the e gpu because the signal goes directly to the display and doesn’t need to go back to cpu and then to monitor. Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!

Maybe someone can help me here with that: I have the combination Razer Core X & SAPPHIRE Nitro+ Radeon RX 5700 XT 8G GDDR6. It works fine but as I mostly use it for video editing, the colours are soooooo in the majenta direction and contrast is pretty low. Does anyone experience something like that? ist there a way to calibrate the colours of the graficcard?

With thunderbolt 2 it works but you need to run a script called purge wrangler. Are you sure iMac 5k 2015 has thunderbolt 2? Anyway overclock won’t work because it’s a Mac and doesn’t have water cooling so I don’t think there are big performance difference in different 5700 xt brands. The gpu is the same at the end of the day so get the one you prefer

Great video. Is there any way I can disable USB-C port charging on my Mac Book Pro or make it so my Razer Core X does not continuously charge my MBP? I am afraid that constantly having my laptop charging from the eGPU will ruin the battery.

Not that I am aware of. Apple is pretty strict with customisation so I don't think it's an option. Maybe with windows laptop you could.

Shades of Tech good deal man.. the testing that I’ve done with the 2012 MBP is showing pretty significant impact, but it is only TB1. The experience on the 2014 Mac Mini, that I did a video on, was better, but it has TB2. Next up I’ll be working on one for a 2017 iMac (with TB3), so curious to see the difference on that one. 😉

What is the idle CPU temperature when running the monitor directly using the laptop vs through the egpu? Also does the egpu help with UI lag when running in scaled resolutions?

The temperature really depends on which laptop and cpu use and which program. If you have a laptop with inthegrated graphics you will definitely see an improvement in temperatures when use graphic intensive programs because the egpu will make all the heavy lifting. Also the egpu will help in gaming if this is what you’re asking and you will see better frame rates

@@BhanukaManesha it depends if your laptop has a dedicated gpu or not. If yes you shouldn’t see noticeable improvements in temps, if no you should see big improvements

@@ShadesOfTech Right. My laptop is the MacBook Pro late 2016 15inch. It has Radeon 455 so I’m assuming it won’t be much of an improvement. The reason is I do a lot of software development and my idle temps are very high when I run two 4K monitors.

You will see a lot of improvements on the graphic side. In theory the heat created by the internal gpu is now outside cooled by the egpu fans so that part of overall pc heat will be reduced. Not sure how it will impact just the cpu temperature. The overall mac temperature and fan speed will be reduced for sure. And inthreory also the cpu temperature because now the Mac fan just cool the cpu and ram and not the gpu anymore. So overall you should see improvements

Hey man, nice video! I'm contemplating to get an eGPU setup myself (razer core X + xfx rx5700xt thicc iii) for my macbook pro 16 i7. It would be mainly used for gaming as I would want to reduce the heat generated in the macbook itself to prolong its life (the temps are at 60-80 degC while gaming), and of course to increase the FPS a bit. Based on your experience, would say that an eGPU would reduce the heat in the macbook pro and we can see a noticeable increase in FPS number? Thanks!

Shahmi Suhaimee yes you mbp will definitely reduce temps. About fps it depends on the graphics you have already. Definitely the best setup for gaming is connecting the egpu to an external display. Max Yurvey made some tests with the 16” mbp and the 5700 xt go watch them for the specific numbers

1- What kind of timeline is it? 4k, 1080p and which framerate? 2 - did you go to FCPX settings and set the egpu as primary gpu for rendering? Honestly the 580 is not that powerful gpu, it was base in the 2019 iMac if I remember correctly. If you already set the settings right my only suggestion is to get a better gpu

I shot everything in 1080 so that's my timeline and I wasnt aware that i could go to the FCPX settings and set the egpu as my primary for rendering, so I will try that! Since my last comment I upgraded my 580 4g to a 8g and it does a little better but my computer gets hot a lot faster and needs to take a break. I will try settings adjustments as you suggested.

I applied the setting and it still flickers in playback. The strange thing is I had no problem exporting and opening my projects b4 the new fcpx update and the addition of my razor core now it says that my documents arnt compatible with QuickTime

Yeah I am using it with a thunderbolt 2 2013 Mac Pro. You have to run a script called purge wrangler to trick the system into thinking it’s a thunderbolt 3 (tb2 is not ufficiallly supported by Apple). For the 5700 xt you need to skip the auto configuration and restart the Mac before connecting the egpu

Are you sure it’s a 2015? As far as I know 2015 has tb3.. can you check exactly your iMac model in the Mac informations?

You just google purge wrangler on google there is the official page. Once done you don’t need to restart every time, just in case of software update you need to update. Vega 64 is the same but 5700xt is better for video editing because it supports h265 and it’s newer. I use this configuration with iMac 2013 tb1 and works so no problem!

I disagree! I run all kind of numbers and test and I didn't see any particular disadvantage in benchmark or real life usage between thunderbolt 2 and 3. The 3 is a little bit advantaged in fcpx exporting but it's not a huge difference. So it makes a lot of sense indeed.
