A pivotal figure in the ’90s Chicago rap scene, producer No I.D. cut his teeth in the city’s house music scene before turning his ears to hip-hop and producing the bulk of Common’s early output, including the classic “I Used to Love H.E.R.”
No I.D. sat down with Chicago journalist Andrew Barber to discuss his early years with Common, managing Kanye West, becoming friends with Jay-Z and why humility and focus are key to success in this public lecture as part of the Red Bull Music Festival Chicago 2018.

__________________________
The two childhood friends first parted ways after three albums leaving No I.D. to expand his horizons by managing a young Kanye West and working with Jermaine Dupry, Jay-Z and more. In the late ’00s No I.D. helped Kanye fashion the sound of 808s & Heartbreaks before taking on the position of president at G.O.O.D. Music, adding boardroom expertise to his impecable production credits.
Since then he has become one of the top A&R men at Def Jam, founded ARTium Recordings and worked as the executive vice president at Capitol Music Group. Yet No I.D. remains one of the best producers in the game, responsible for shaping the sound of albums as diverse as Vince Staples’ Summertime 06, Vic Mensa’s The Autobiography and Jay-Z’s 4:44.

Respect to No ID! His story was the most relatable to me because he kept it real about the long journey to success, overnight success is rare, and most people will reach their goals at a steady pace over time, like the little engine that could.

You can tell that No IDs mind is deeper than he's able to express in the space he's given. You have to sit with him for few hours to get to the depth of how this dude views music.

His lack of personal disbelief seems to have prevented him from seeing the opportunities that he in hindsight was seeking. Good lesson learned from watching this, I'm likely surrounded by everyone I need and asked for to make my dreams come true.

From Ye interviews, you can see so clearly that Ye tries to emulate no ID's personality. Laid back, loving, patient, observant, thought provoking. Ye always seems to be thinking 500 things at once and moving so quickly, and of course isn't as humble, but you can tell he appreciates and respects the personality of this man a lot. Two different men, both made better (in part) just from knowing each other and learning life lessons through each other's presence. Amazing to see. And just to be clear, I think Ye does more than emulate, he does genuinely seem to have these traits, but the similarities show the positive influence.
