Penny Lane is such a haunting, subtle, wistful song. It's so rich and full. And yet this deconstruction shows how restrained it all is. The vocal harmonies are applied so sparingly. It's a song by an auteur who knew exactly what he wanted and how to make it happen. And I am constantly amazed by Paul's beautiful voice. His phrasing is full of tiny variations provoking feelings of nostalgia and surrealism. He is an artist.

This is like performing surgery on the song Pennylane.. So cool to hear the slight quirks in the notes of the bass. Vocals are excellent as well.

How did the Beatles get these guys together?, you got Smokey Robinson playing flute in top left, and Lee Havey Oswald in top right playing the flute, then there's Rumsfeld playing the trumpet at bottom right. Oh I forgot Joe Mantenga from "Criminal Minds" in the middle on the left on the trumpet.😊😊😊

Oh, how wonderful, thank you so much! And at 10:37 there's a kind of lion's roar! And what is that deep instrument at 9:33? It's unbelievable what's built in there that you can hardly or not at all hear!
@rbstems5 ай бұрын
The instrument at 9:33 is a slowed down harmonium I believe, and at 10:37 it's a drum roll on some kind of percussion!

It would be hard to argue that the Double A Side Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane isn’t the best Single release ever. The Beatles were at their creative best.
@kevinmcinerney19595 ай бұрын
I read somewhere that Brian Epstein came to the studio wanting to know what was available for a single, and George Martin said that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields were the best thing they had ever done. Sounds banal, but it conveyed to me that Martin was aware that the Beatles weren't just a celebrity phenomenon wading into the counterculture and drug culture for showbiz reasons. He recognized that their work had become serious music and he was onboard with it.

It got blocked in the deconstruction along with the upright pianos part, but both are fine as standalone videos. Haven't started to work on Baby You're A Rich Man, but I don't have nearly as many files for it than Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane, it should take less time to put out.

The only one I hear singing the harmony is John. The single-tracked vocals seem to confirm this. I don't think George had any input in the vocals.

Yeah me too, I don't hear George, but he is credited with vocals. Maybe his part got buried or removed ; I'm pretty sure you can hear him on the rehearsal take on the Pepper boxset.
