The local Honda dealer recommends service at intervals. Their 30K service includes the fluid change. The shop drains the fluid and refills. Gotta admit the car felt like it just came off the showroon floor afterwards. I'm a former Hyundai / Chevy owner and did tranny fluid changes 50K and every 50K afterwards and haven't had a problem. In the old days ... we would let let the tranny drain out, drop the pan, replace the filter and gaskets, refill, and check fluid levels.

To simplify it all down; maintain proper intervals when it comes to transmission fluid changes. If you plan on doing short trips from home to work majority of your time; then it’s best to change transmission fluids every 60,000 km (roughly 40,000 miles). However, if your work requires highway driving or you do lot of road tripping, then it’s best to change within 75,000 to 80,000 km (50,000 miles roughly). With proper transmission maintenance also comes proper engine oil and servicing! Change engine oil every 5,000 to 6,000 km if you plan on using the vehicle on short drives as mentioned! As I had mentioned above again; if longer commutes daily or road tripping on a more frequent basis, then change oil every 7,000 to 8,000 km. Never go by what dealerships say, (knowing BMW, they want the engine to fail so you pay them 10 grande to replace it)

At the same time I am going to have my brake fluid changed because after having my new brakes/rotors replaced I feel the brake pedal not to firm and the braking is not smooth as before. For the CVT I only feel a bit of a jerk at low speeds as when for an example coming to a stop, then the traffic goes and I start accelerating and it jerks a very little bit. I checked online and other CVT Honda owners have said that they felt the same at low speeds. Like 2 or 3 times I felt like the car when I let off the brake pedal it seem it didn't want or easy move forward. I don't know if the brakes are stuck or something with the transmission but it all started after getting my new brakes and rotors replaced. Thanks, for the video and the tips. There is a difference between a flush and a drain and fill. Drain and fill not flush. Al trannies 😅 have a filter, they will tell you it does not but it does, it is internal and is not as easy to access as it once was. The best thing to do is change the filter and the fluid if possible without having to pull the whole transmission. If the dealer does a flush, they will connect a machine to the cooler lines that typically connect to the bottom of radiator. And pump the fluid in a reverse direction. That will blow all the crap caught in the filter back into the tranny. Also there are valves that may be damaged by this. If you have not changed your fluid regularly don't bother. Any good tranny was manufactured to last 150 to 200k anyways.

30k change intervals should be just fine. But if you are doing mainly city driving and plan on keeping the car many years then 25k would suit you better. Use only Honda CVT recommended fluid. Personally just change fluid with recommended fluid quantity and call it good.

Just purchased a nissan versa new this year. I have a few questions: first, is four minutes enough to let the car warm up? I give it that much time before I even turn the air con on. Secondly, I'm concerned about the transmission. So, not pressing too hard on the gas pedal is key to not killing it so early, eh? I am not a speedster but I do live in Florida. So I have to travel a lot, so some speed is required to not get shafted on the road to pass. Should I be worried doing this just to get by in my new vehicle?
@RBTheMechanic2 ай бұрын
I would definitely say get new vehicle these Nissans r not the best and 4-7 minutes is good to warm up and going easy on gas peddle will extend the life of transmission

I believe the rule of thumb is.. if it's over 100,000 miles, you should drain and fill, never do a flush. Over 200,000 miles, don't bother changing fluid if its never been changed at all.. drive till it breaks down. Change every 30,000 miles or 50,000 kilometers.

Great video. I own (2) Honda’s. A 2017 Civic EXT and a 2016 Accord EX-L V6. I changed the Civics transmission fluid out at 48k. I used Amsoil. It cost a little more but has better heat tolerance than the Honda brand. I definitely felt the difference after the change. I do have a question. Do you recommend changing the 2 filters O rings and pan gasket? If so at what intervals?
@RBTheMechanic Жыл бұрын
I would change the filter at 90k
@boomerguy993511 ай бұрын
I also use Amsoil CVT fluid in my 2016 HR-V but I change it at 30K miles. This transmission has presented no problems at all since I bought the car new. There was a recall in which Honda checked the transmission for any damage, then re-programmed the software and extended the warranty on it to 150K miles. Love it!

Excellent info, thanks. I was considering a 2024 Honda HRV to replace my 2012 Honda Fit Sport, but I’ll either have some repairs done on it or purchase a Mazda CX-5 with geared automatic. I’ll never trust any CVT.
@boomerguy993511 ай бұрын
I think CVT is OK for light use in a passenger car and the fluid is changed regularly. However, the regular automatic transmissions are much more durable and reliable. From what I've read and experienced, as long as the fluid is changed regularly with quality full synthetic ATF, the filter will not need to be changed. However, if you don't know the transmission's history, I would definitely change the filter. This is what I've done and I've never had a problem. @@jonboz7585

I’ve got a 2020 Infiniti QX60 FWD with 51k miles. I use Amsoil for the engine every 5k miles 30k for the transmission. it’s got that stupid Jatco CVT from Nissan. When I bought my 2017, Hyundai accent people told me that it was a throw away lighter 155K miles and it’s still running strong. You think I could get at least 200K from the QX 60?

It’s all about luck. For example I still have my 2010 Dodge Caliber SXT that I got back in 2012. It currently has almost 130k miles. Original transmission and never had an oil change (for the cvts back then the manufacturer said the oil should last at least the complete life service of the transmission). However, for having 130k miles on it and never changed the oil, it has worked pretty well. I think this Jatco on my caliber was one of a kind. Hope it gets to 200k someday

I work on my own stuff (whenever possible). I own everything from full size vans to a bunch of European compact cars most mechanics would not even touch. I inherited my aunt's 2015 Nissan Rouge S last fall after she passed away. It's got less than 30K miles on it. It's not a car I would see on a dealer's lot and say, "I really like that car even though it looks identical to everything else being built". It runs great and the cloth firm seats are comfortable. Oddly enough, I like that it doesn't have allot of bells and whistles being an S model. All I need is a good heater, air conditioner, radio and AWD. I've got an 84 Dodge van that's a 4 speed manual without power steering, AC or anything else power. I've heard the CVT transmissions are bad. But I am glad to know that simply changing the fluid and filter every 30K miles should keep it from crapping out. I've heard people say theirs failed as low as 40,000 miles and others have said they have well over 100,000 miles on theirs. Like you say it must be a maintenance thing and of course how you drive it. The 170 hp 2.5 engine doesn't feel as peppy as I would expect it would. I got an 80 hp 1977 MGB with a pushrod engine, 4 speed manual, carbureted and I swear it feels more powerful than this thing does. Maybe I'm just afraid to give the Nissan hell when driving it!
