Same issue with all these hand launches - they throw at too high an angle, which causes a stall. Its much better to throw horizontally and after it drops a bit (but gains speed) give a little elevator. They way they throw works if your model has thrust to weight ratio over 1 ;)
@MrWaz11

So true!
@_Mk9

Only one of those throws was intentional! 🤪 The F-14 launch: it has over 1:1 thrust to weight, but it was a prototype maiden and there was insufficient roll authority to correct the right bank. The Vulcan and the Fury are really difficult to hand launch as there is nothing to grab on to at the CG spot. With the Vulcan, all the 'throw' happens as a push at the TE of the wing. A long moment if you push too hard, with quite spectacular results as you see. The Vulcan is also marginally powered, so without a decent throw, 'drops a bit' becomes a landing! Fortunately you are seeing several years of incidents in a short period of time, otherwise no one would let me near their planes!
@MrWaz11

Correct. It is much harder to launch some of those planes horizontally than it looks. I have failed twice myself. Almost all hand launches are successful and I have plenty of videos of those as well.

Yup, insufficient airspeed and too acute angle of attack! I have a very underpowered 1/5th scale J3 Cub that you absolutely must fly like the full size Cub ... shallow climb out with rudder only, no aileron until you get some airspeed.

I really liked the shot of the SR-71 briefly sticking up out of the shallow water like a dart, hahaha! 😅 Very good video, and the music was perfect for what is being watched. Nice job here.

Thanks John. Glad that you appreciated it. Yes the SR-71 was comical at the time as well - especially once we realised that there was no damage.

Love the launcher's reactions. You've also got video of my Macchi M33 flipping on its back.

If you drop a wing at low speed, use rudder to correct it, not aileron. Aileron will only make the problem worse at low speed. Your friend needs some practice at launching too, maybe get him to practice with a cricket ball, it'll cost you less that way!
@MrWaz11

So true regarding the recovery technique, but not automatic for many RC pilots. Can be too low to recover as well. The launcher has had many more successes than failures, but of course they are not featured in this video.

Indeed. Hand launching EDFs is Tim's speciality and I'm grateful for it, but it does have its drawbacks!

Yeah I do seem over-represented on reflection! I do hate it when my poor launch is the cause of someone else's hard work going down the gurgler. Sorry Nathan! Thank goodness Waz is there to catch them so we can all learn from the mishaps.

Low airspeed, coupled with launching by hand at too high an angle of attack. Stalled in the first two casss.

I'm not sure what you mean. I videoed all of these myself, but the only ones I piloted were the Catalina (used a cap mounted GoPro) and the Trojan. This had a camera mounted on the plane.

Title is misleading. You did put in the boring bits. You slowed it down. This is KZbin which gives the viewer the choice to slow it down. I can slow any video down without the author assuming it needs to be slowed down for every viewer.

On virtually all of these mishaps there was no rudder input. I’m no expert, but, I do know you can’t raise a stalled wing with the ailerons
@MrWaz11
@MrWaz11 Жыл бұрын
So true, but some of these planes - like the Vulcan - don't have a rudder. You also need enough height to recover, which can be difficult from take off.

The ground take offs need more speed on the ground before lifting off. Less chance of a stall after take off as was the case in almost all of these.
@MrWaz11
@MrWaz11 Жыл бұрын
Agree. Insufficient airspeed was also a big issue with the hand launched EDFs

Lousy hand launches for most of those and the Corsair pilot was holding up elevator through the liftoff, guaranteeing liftoff at too high A of A and too slow.

Are you giving right rudder on warbirds takeoffs. The motor torque will turn the planes over to the left. And a gyro helps 👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
