Agree. Thats what I told him to. The magnet has to be close enough to the coil contact point to generate electricity through it. I was taught how to set the gap using a matchbook cover, I've used that method on any small engine I have worked on and it usually works, I think its the same thickness as a playing card.

and kev flooded the engine before he even tried pulling the cord, look at the spark plug its covered in raw gas. you only have to push the primer bulb 3 or 4 times anymore and your just pouring gas into carb, put full choke on, pull until you hear it sputter a little, take the choke off and then pull a few times, should start right up. if it doesnt repeat the process but after you take the choke off hold the throttle down half way only. My experience is from being around chainsaws and 2 stroke engines my entire life.If it doesnt start up after 3 times of that procedure youve flooded it. Dont keep pulling its not going to do you any good, just pull the plug out and let the gas evaporate.

For the esc fan, take the fan cover off and just bolt the fan on without the shroud. With the fan it has a little bit of play up and down and what happens is when you land bad or hard it pushes up and the fan blade catches the opening on the fan cover and snaps the fan. I took my fan cover off and now I haven’t broken a fan since. I used to break 2 fans a day but taking the cover off fixed it.

Hey Kev! The Problem with the engine is the flywheel-coil gap is way too big! It should only be about 25-30 thou of an inch (around 0.075mm), its basically the thickness of a playing card, or folded paper. Hopes this helps! ~Brayden

I’ve got a “killer rc” kill switch in my 1/5 scale redcat: Kev- the coil to flywheel distance should be about 10 thousandth of an inch (0.010”) not sure wat that translate to metric measurements- just use a baseball card, or put a layer of painters tape across the coil & one on the flywheel to get the distance. & radio on first, then buggy’s receiver, check & make sure the transmitter side of the buggy’s kill switch works. Double check that the kill switch is in the “off” position so the engine gets spark. With the Killer Rc’s kit- it will have different color & different blinking light patterns indicating which “low battery voltage” setting it’s set to, & it has a nice lil feature: it beeps at you telling u when it’s “off” & the buggy can be pull started... mines plumbed to the “aux” button on an Austar three channel 2.4ghz ....channel.., it’s a definite must have safety feature to prevent the rig from running away & having a mind of its own, especially important if you have kids, pets/ animals, trees around, &/or a busy highway... these fifth scales can do some damage if it gets a mind of its own.

Kev !! Km Baja owner here !! You need to make sure the 3rd channel switch on the transmitter is sending the right signal to the kill switch, try reading all the instructions as they can be setup differently for planes etc, also male sure the polarity on the receiver to kill switch connection is the right way around .. .... If all else fails u have a dead switch .. I bought a cheap £15 one and its great (except it will run without the radio switched on so doesn't protect against a receiver battery flatten /fail.) So literally just a 3rdchannel kill switch not a glorified one with all the common features Get yourself some shocks / crankcase / pull start / air filter outer wears ... It will stop the dust/debris ingress and damage to shocks , coil , flywheel ,pull start and crank case !! Flywheel and coil gap use a business card in between the coil and magnets on flywheel , let the magnets pull it down with business card in between them , tighten up , turn flywheel to release business card.. 3rd channel kill switch is essential !!! Stop a runaway / damage to buggy/people/property!! Carbon fibre chassis guards are a must to keep internals of chassis clean , uber rc offer them for £35 ,or custom make them yourself like i have for £10-15 Bonehead rc driveshaft guards are also important to keep axles and drive boots in good condition and stop grass wrapping ... £8! Mad Max tyres are great price /quality !! Rear Axle extenders make for a more stable rear end !! Reverse pinion bolt bolt is also a must !! And always prime a 2stroke engine , by choking it , giving it a few pulls/kicks to prime the engine until it gives a"pop" , in choke it and it will fire !!

Did you try reversing the wires on the coil? Also, I think you have to have a certain gap between the flywheel and coil in order to generate spark. Check to see if there is a magnet on the edge of the flywheel. I know on some 2 stroke weed wackers and 4 stroke engines there is a magnet on the flywheel. On a 4stroke engine I have always used a matchbook cover to set the gap between the flywheel and coil.

Forget reversing the wires, just check the gap I know its wrong. Like someone else said use a piece of notebook paper folded three times or matchbook cover. Thats a good starting point.

Get it running in two easy steps: 1) gap the magnito with a business card to get a STRONGER spark. 2) use a different tx/Rx. These switches don't work with AVC, which is spectrums version of Traxxas TSM. And once you have done those you need to pull a jumper to make the lvc work, otherwise if your battery dies while on the throttle and your reciever cuts out the throttle will be stuck open. With the lvc active, when your battery voltage drops it kills the motor and you can still steer and brake to a stop.

The gap in the coil from the flywheel should be the width of a card or you can get a special part. It also sounds too lean. One tip is not to keep pulling it after 8 or more pulls as you will just flood it. Always start with the choke on.

The flywheel only goes on The same way there is no adjustment on that for a gap because it just goes right on the crank shaft and the woodruff key is what holds it in place along with the flywheel bolt

I have the same kit on my 5t and you are correct in how it works. However the Coil gap is too large, your not going to get enough spark to fire like that! Put it much closer. A buisness card ect is good for setting it if you don’t have a set of feeler gauges

With the hobby wing you have to take the Metal shield off or it will do that to the fan we do that in 1/8 scale racing every time. Please try so you will have better luck with the hobby wing.

For the spacing on the coil a cheap way to do it take a sheet of paper fold the paper in half and put it between the coil and the flywheel that’ll give you just enough Clarence

If you want to start it with the kill switch you need to flip the switch on the transmitter, so the red light is on otherwise the coil isn't loading the spark plug. Good luck I hope it works

Starting sequence once you got spark is choke on 2 slow pulls draw fuel into carb one sharp pull so engine pops then choke off then fast pull car will fire up 2 pulls max p.s. Great channel

Bypass your kill switch to see if that is the problem good way is to take it out of the equation then go from there. Also use volt meter check from from beginning to end connection point of each wire and you will probably find a bad connection if it's not the kill switch

Hi mate. Regarding the kill switch. U r having issues with it but believe me you are bonkers to run without one. I have seen 1/5 runaways and they can be very bad indeed. Use a business card to set the gap between the flywheel and coil. As you have spark without the kill connected your setup there looks ok. I had a rovan spark plug interfere with my kill switch recently. Try swapping to an ngk or better quality plug. Check the end points on your control that the 3rd Chanel is setup to be on/ off. Not familiar with your particular kill switch but if the light is red/ off as it should be then I guess it’s either the kill itself or something arming it when it shouldn’t. A tip on starting. Prime the engine by pumping the bulb and then doing 4 or so slow pulls over with the car off. Then try it. If it does nothing. Give I choke for 1 or 2 pulls at most. U should get a v brief start then stall. Turn off the choke and then should b 1 pull to start. Don’t leave the choke on and pull like mad as it will just flood. Good luck mate. 👍👌🏼

If it has low or no spark Buy an feeler gauge to set armature gap u can look up the distance it needs to be from the flywheel with the last five digits on the rewind starter.

If it still has the crappy Torch / Chinesium spark plug it came with, change it for an NGK as those plugs are known to fail under pressure. Sparking outside is no guarantee it's still working inside the engine. Only push the fuel bulb untill you just start to see fuel in the return tube, that engine is clearly flooded. My mate has a Dynamite in his 1/5th and works perfectly, it isn't polarity sensitive, so could be faulty if it still doesn't work with a plug change and gapping the coil with a playing card.

Forget everything else u do need to set your coil gap use a card and as for the killswitch try reversing the wires to the reciever or try setting it to off then see if it starts or just swap it out get a switchblade v2 or killerbee I had every cheap killswitch going and always had starting problems or false kills till I got a switchblade

i feel like its a wiring issue with the killswitch and the spark is the gap of the plug. just hit the ground electrode down until it sparks. or find what spec you need and gauge it correctly with those coins.

With my experience of engines I know what could cause a runaway! Normally for rc cars to have a runaway is that the throttle would would lock up into its position and keep letting fuel in causing a runaway. Its the same for diesal's if the throttle gets stuck it causes a runaway diesal which is very dangerous for the engine. So I recommend checking the fuel intake to the engine if it feels stiff.

If it's getting spark when the kill switch is unplugged, the coil gap IS FINE. The issue is likely the wiring harness between the coil and switch.

If you can't get your kill switch working you could try set up an extra servo that pinches the fuel line. A fail safe is always a good bet aswell

Very good possibility that you got a bad kill switch. I would recommend a killer 🐝 kill switch, I’ve got three on different rigs. I have also read that sometimes the kill switches create interference with the cheaper spark plugs that come stock with these rcs. Maybe try replacing the plug with an NGK. It’s clear that it’s not a flywheel gap problem as you are getting spark when the switch is unplugged. Good luck guys! Btw, the business card spacing is an acceptable way

Your gap is off use a match book cover or a business card or a gap tool from like Dave’s discount motors. The coil and the fly wheel create the. Spark . The flywheel is also keyed witch controls timing so if that is ever sheared that’s a problem also . Coils can go bad also but if all was well before most likely just a issue with the gap .

It might be that the coils arnt conduckting enough electricity so there for it wont spark all of the power is going to the light all a spark plug is meant to do is give short sparks of electricity so if that little electricity is going to that toggle switch and led so it you were to add in a m10 capacitor it might just be enough to get it started and turn it odd as a bypass or if u redirect the flow ti the sparkplug and splice in the kill switch

Try the other position on the original kill switch and the gap should be 0.30 mm or 0.25 mm ish ,but you had a spark so should be ok

Before you to take everything apart: Try to power on your transmitter first and the the receiver, I have the same kill switch installed in my Losi DBXL and that is what does the trick for me. The spark looks fine to me, The gap between the coil and the flywheel is maybe a bit on the large side but if it's sparks it doesn't matter... Are the jumpers (Little black and red plastic things on the side) still in the original position or did you move them to a other voltage level? You also can check if you pluged the kill sitch in the right channel and maybe reverse the wire on the receivers end. If i remember right the wires on the coil side had no specific terminal so you can't connect them wrong. If it still won't start: Take the best tool out of your toolbox: Mister Hammer and beat the sh*t out of it ;) :D Hope this helps, Good luck! Great video btw :D

Throw a tp motor in there. The kraton is already ridiculously awesome as it is and that motor will fit the bill perfectly.

The first problem is that it isn't a killer bee killswitch. The second problem is that remote.. Having it wired to the traxxas diff switch. The light needs to be out for it to start, red denotes a cut off. Also you need outerwears. One more thing.. You're not starting it properly anyway and will end up breaking the pull start or at least flooding it. Prime the bulb, apply choke if cold then Slowly pull the cord to increase cylinder pressure.. When it stops and wont pull all u need then is one pop to compress it and start.. Ofcourse the kill switch may well be faulty.

Lol Kevin, next time rest the pinion gear on top of a vise. Use a gun punch and tap on the shaft. The pinion will slip write off. Lock tight seeps onto the shaft on the motor and sticks the pinions on tight.
