People ask on a very regular basis about recommendations for getting into RC drifting.
In this video, I go through some of the differences between the cheaper AWD setups that are available and the more expensive RWD dedicated drift platforms that people can choose from.
I firmly believe that both have their place, and a reason why a certain person would enjoy one more than another.
To demonstrate this, I am using a Redcat Thunder Drift, and a MST RMX2.0S.

Update! If you are looking to get into the RWD RC drift world - I suggest you check out these 3. They are the best offered right now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4PQpotqYrqBo6c The Redcat Thunder Drift I show in this video has also been discontinued. BUT - the Redcat Lightning Drift might actually be better. Here it is: bit.ly/461yic3

Beautiful, Just the video I was looking for. Have looked into it on and off over the years and decided today to try using my 1/8th buggy with a set of 1/8 truck rims that I'm never going to glue up and went to a local carpark, Set up 4 cones for a layout similar to your 'elongated C' and had a ball. Was clumsy but ridiculous fun, Now I'm looking for a drift car. Was a bit lost in the 2 vs 4 thing but you've given a lovely, Thoughtful rundown of pros and cons so I'll be going 4wd for my situation. Thank you

Mate what an awesome video that will help so many people 👍 It helped me two I'm by no means new to rc I have a lot lol I'm not saying how many incase the wife sees 😂 Drift wise though I'm slowly getting into it, but I did going gor the tt01e I didn't buy it as a drifter as such I bought it because I wanted the euro racing truck, but I also made it into a fun skyline r34 drifter.. Your definitely right you just can't beat a proper 2wd drifter for perfect surface drifting but if that's not all your really be doing going the other route of a 4wd and drift conversion is good, then you can also convert it back and get those high speed uses around the street. Happy rcing bud, your by far one of my favourite channels 👍

I think if you had a track marked or some traffic cones then you might find the street more of a fun surface with those obstacles. I drive my TT-02D in the parking lot at work and powersliding around the curbs at the end of the aisles at full speed is super fun. Like you said, RWD for precision and control, and then AWD for all-out full throttle slides.

Great video! For sure the rear wheel drive car is smoother! Just look at those endpoints in the front wheel when it’s drifting, pretty hard to have that much counter steer with an all wheel drive.your absolutely right though, if I were to get into competition drifting 2 wheel drive is the way to go, but if wanted a more multi purpose car that can do it all pretty good including rallying and off road drifting the cheaper all wheel drive is the much less expensive (sometimes) and better way to go. My self, I enjoy multi use cars more than more focused single purpose vehicles! Great job on this!👊🏼💯👍🏻

What you showed tia on your video is a great example of what we can expect in selecting a drift car. I was looking at drift cars 6 or 7 years ago when I assumed AWD was all that was being offered. I tried one out at an RCX show that I beloved was based on an AWD HPI platform and it was fun. I eventually settled on my TC4 knowing asphalt parking lots were all I would have access to and I could always swap tires back to a grip car when I wanted a grip car. I had made my own pvc tires as well as buying a set that were supposed to have a little better grip for asphalt. I never really got the drifting down to a perfection which I attributed to not understanding weight bias or maybe running a gyro but it sure was fun. I’m thinking 4wd is still suited better to my local area. Thankyou again. Sub earned.

Thanks, great video! I used to drive HPI’s back in early 2000’s. I recently got back into the hobby last year during the pandemic and was surprised to find out from local RC hobby stores that HPI has become almost obsolete. But I still went that route and purchased the HPI RS4 Sport 3 Drift Dai Yoshihara Subaru BRZ - I love it and have started a wall of customized shells to swap out (and wheel sets), lol. Like you explained in your video, AWD set up is perfect for outdoor/asphalt drifting. At some point, I’d like to invest in a RWD at some point to try indoor drifting. However, for my current AWD, is there a setting on my transmitter that I can adjust to for driving on indoor tracks?

Sorry, but no. Most indoor tracks will not even allow AWD on a track. If you just want to drive in your garage (or similar spot), then just go have fun. There really aren't any controller settings to change.

Hello from chilly Scotland. Mate - thanks for that, it was really helpful. I bought an £85 TT02D kit lockdown project. I knew it wasn't a proper drift car but until now I didn't fully understand 'why' it wasn't. So. I reckon we need a new description for the Redcat/ TTD type category - 'Slider cars' maybe? Even though I now know it ain't a proper drifter, glad I went for a TT02D slider over a more dedicated platform this time round. High revs & wheelspin isn't the same as precision gliding - but for bashing round the car park, it's alot of whistly motor fun! Plus it was fun putting the TT together & it will probably convert to an adequate touring car basher with the minimal of mods. (I hope 😃) I'll build a Proper Drifter when I find a proper smooth drift spot and got more pennies in the bank - & do it proper. The 'old school' shelled machine drifting round your garage in the vid was Properly Ace! Stay well folks! Cheers.

I made a custom awd rc car based off of a car that was meant for touring. I changed the tires, camber, tow, and packed the rear diff with grease (not locked). All in about $200. It drifts very well, in and outside on asphalt and is a ton of fun. The one issue i have although it might just be specific to my car is that the dogbone driveshafts are under a lot of stress when the wheels turn and break after a while. However, with awd, you dont need a lot of steering angle so reducing it helped greatly.

70 year old newbie here. Was into this Losi Micro 20 years ago. Watched my son go threw the car's and Nitro monster trucks. We had fun. I'm bored now. Was thinking of jumping back in but getting lost in the choices. My wish list is Brushless, Lipo, maybe blue tooth, must wheelie on demand. Fast, parts available, durable, tunable. Was thinking rwd for simplicity???? The AWD has more capability??? Saw a vid on the new Traxxes gravedigger and it impressed me but kinda big. Also liked there Bandit VXL 70MPH. Like the Mini T2 brushless RTR. Not planning on racing. Just want to mess around the house or take to a skate park. Might get 2 full setups so I can have a friend or neighbor over and sit in the driveway and chase each other around the grass and the concrete or out in the street. Might be fun to take over two a friends house for some cheap entertainment and a few beers. I also have a real dune buggy and go to the dunes. Be nice to have something to play with when my real buggy breaks down. I'm feeling lost in all these new wonderful technology choices. Money is not the deciding factor but don't want to go overboard ether. I figure If I get 2 similar set up's. I have less spare parts and no one will claim unfair advantage. hehehe Except that I might have more practice..... Maybe I could just ease into it again and pass some of the stuff on to the grandkids as I get more familiar? What Say You? Enjoyed your vid. Nice editing. Sorry for the rambling.

@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Sounds like you have been giving this some thought! A few suggestions from me: Go AWD, skip RWD. It really is just much more capable, especially when you started talking about the dunes. You will be looking for a basher vehicle - so rule out drift, crawling, etc. Then, it comes down to budget and size of the space you will run in. If you think you will be in the dunes more, I would suggest something like the Arrma Kraton 6S. This is an 1/8 scale truggy that floats over big obstacles and handles really well. Throw on some paddle tires, and you will be amazed what it can do. If you think you will be more around the house, you might want to step it down some (not sure how big your yard is). Check out something like the Arrma Typhon 3S - this is literally one of my favorite vehicles. Handles well, nice and durable, and moderate on the price scale. When you go to the dunes, you might be able to put some paddle tires on it and still have a blast.

Really enjoyed this, thanks! The RWD car is super smooth, mesmerising to watch. Could the asphalt traction issue be addressed with different tyres? Asphalt is where I’d be doing this. What would the 4WD car be like if you took out the front drive? E.g. remove the front driveshafts.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Very common questions. Yes - there are a bunch of different tire choices, and going softer on the RWD would certainly make it better on the asphalt. Just be warned - you will burn through them quickly. Good thing they are cheap! There are ways to convert the AWD car to RWD...but they cost a lot, and you end up with a car that is not as good as a dedicated RWD chassis from the beginning. If all you do is remove the driveshaft, differential, etc...you are very limited based on the steering angle the AWD car has. Let me know if you have more questions - and check out some of the other drift videos.

@-DawnZero 2 жыл бұрын
Taking out the front CVDs on a AWD chassis makes it spin out more often than not. You can get closer to 2WD drifting with an AWD chassis by locking the rear and either going with a one-way front diff or changing out the ring gears for an under/overdrive gearing setup. Both will allow you to counter steer with an AWD chassis. It'd also be wise to spend the money on CVDs over dog bones when taking this route, as you'll want to use the screw hole on the C-Hub that links to your steering that will allow for more throw.

I have a Sakura D4, a cheap drift-dedicated chassis. When I bought it it was 4WD. With a good choice of tires, it went as well on asphalt as on carpet/tiles. When I converted it to RWD, there seemed to be no way the rear tires could have good traction on the tarmac - the asphalt has gaps that ruin the smooth movement. Now I'm thinking of getting the D5S for indoors and convert the D4 back to AWD for asphalt.

Hey there! Glad this was helpful. 1) The YD2 chassis is a good one. I haven't seen it as cheaper than the MST chassis head-to-head before, so be careful where you are looking. Both Yokomo and MST base chassis start at around $200. 2) Not sure what events you are talking about. 3) When you get a drift chassis, you also need to get a GOOD gyro, a proper drift gyro, esc and motor, transmitter and receiver, body + paint, and wheels & tires. You will spend much more on the components than the chassis.

First drift chassis I got was the hpi e10 and it was the worst mistake I made still have it sitting in a shelf with a 15 t motor in it that makes the drive shaft bounce. Fixed my mistake by buying an mst rmx 2.0 rtr and I loved it so bought the mst fxx-d for a realistic feel with motor front mounted and then got a tamiya tt01 and slapped a brushless 3300kv in it and it’s perfect. All my friend use awd drift chassis here in Calgary but with over drive and underdrive systems to help out with control. so every time a new comer asks what drift rc should I get I say it’s always based on three questions 1) what your price range? 2. Are you easy on the throttle or a heavy trigger ? For this I find if your easy rwd is the best way to go because your feathering the throttle but with an awd it’s more all out power 3. What type of surface are you running on? If you like to hit the street go awd but if you do carpet or smooth concrete or tile then go rwd! It is tough though to help out the new comers that’s why I usually just let my friends try my rwd and awd to see what they like better some people pick up my rwd and instantly set it back down some people love it
