Hi Vas. You sold me on converting to XT150 and I have watched this vid and your xt150 soldering video. The only thing you left out is a detailed section on what gender and housing to use on charger leads, battery, and esc to duplicate what you did. Even a picture of each would suffice. I have spent quite a bit of time searching the internet and info on this topic is scattered, inconsistent and conflicting with each other. Thanks mate. The way I'm putting it all together in my mind is: ESC: Female large red housing, Male skinny black housing Batteries: Female skinny red housing, Male large black housing Charger lead: Female large red housing, Male skinny black housing If that's not right, I'm totally lost.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate your video. Just finished adding a Sidewinder 8th and figured it was the perfect time to change connectors. I used the xt150’s and won’t look back at those Traxxas connectors. Being able to avoid the “Y” connection is super nice too. Thanks so much for posting.

I always laugh when I see ESC's on Ebay promoting 320A current, and fitted with a Tamiya plug.

Leo van Miert can someone explain this joke
@leorcc7 жыл бұрын
Not so much a joke but an observation. Tamiya plugs are among the weakest plugs for RC. Though popular in older RC's, anything above 30-40 A and the connector just melts together. To claim 300+ Amperes and then fit a Tamiya plug on your ESC says to me "I put that number on the package but I don't believe it either" .

That is sad, u gotta explain ur joke. Tho i am newbies but i got ur point ;)
@RC_Trailblazers6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I ran Tamiyas on my first RC I got. Only running a 7 Cell NImh battery I burned the crap out of one of them and it actually melted the plastic from the connector on the battery to the connector on the ESC.

the red plug with the 4mm bullets are HXT 4mm. rated to 93A, they are super simple to solder and you can cut the plastic housing in half to make series connections like the xt150. I use these exclusively for my F3A pattern planes where 80-85A are typical, I use two 5S packs are wired in series to make a 10s pack. since they are banana conectors, they are great for lots of other uses too. you get a 10 pack from HK for about $4 USD.

I've always liked the idea of plugging batteries in series with bullet style connectors, however the danger of being able to plug them wrong (Short circuit a battery on itself or closing the circuit between 2 batteries) makes me regret them. Also the use of right sized or over sized connectors will mitigate the multi connection points "bottleneck" problem.

I moved from deans to ec5 2 years ago, last year I moved to xt90 (xt60 for crawler/flight stuff) and am perfectly happy to remain exactly where I'm at, the issue with ec5 and the xt150 from what I'm seeing is assembly and the hassle of keeping the solder just right so you can still get the bullets to snap into the housing, and while not an issue for most it's allot easier to accidentally short the 150 vs solid paired plugs , xt 60/90 no such issue's, really quick and hassle free to solder up. I'll gladly spend 1min dealing with heatshrink or liquid tape on xt 60/90 to avoid the hassle of ec5 assembly and cracking the plastic pieces. In extreme record attempt environments you may see a dif with the bigger far more expensive xt150, providing battery layout doesn't require you to run a jumper to reach everything anyway, for 99% of everyday use the xt90's are more than sufficient, have built in air cooling in the housings, and are affordable, xt150 not so much, as for castle, yeah they are huge and overkill unless your running a 1/5 scale and you would have to sell a kidney to finance a swap to them from another style if you had more than 1 or 2 cars and batteries. I do see the logic and reasoning behind the xt150, I just don't see the minimal reduction in resistance outweighing the increased risk of a direct short accident or the substantial jump in price.
@AussieRCPlayground8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Dorman Unless you deliberately force both connectors of the battery into each other, I honestly don't see how you can accidentally short out anything with the XT150s - they have a plastic sleeve over the connector. If you're referring to soldering them wrong, then that argument holds very little water because the exact same mistakes can be made with any connector if you're not careful. Regarding price of the XT150s, they cost me AU$10.57 per bag (5 pairs) and the XT90s are AU$10.11 per bag (5 pairs). Although you are technically correct in saying the XT150s are more expensive, I'm not sure how you see the extra $0.46 as being such an issue that it makes them less affordable. As far as the reduction in resistance goes, it's all relevant to the user and how important they deem it to be. It comes down to the application and the results they what to achieve. To some, this may not matter much, but to others, every little bit of extra power and/or efficiency they can squeeze out of the RC is crucial to winning a race, getting longer run times or just being the fastest kid on the block. I do agree that there's nothing wrong with using XT90s and they are suitable for most applications, but to me they still hold a disadvantage when it comes to running batteries in series.

+Aussie RC Playground Interesting video, I just thought i'd mention that when I first saw the XT90 released, I went, hang on, an XT60 can do that, set up a 100A Watt meter (1600W rated, and comes with XT60s) and using some 250W and 65W 12v floodlights, setup a system with around a 75A draw @12v, after 5min the XT60 was basically @ ambient temps, so i added another pair of 65W floodlights, taking to almost 90A and it was hitting high 40s with a 20 ambient temp after 3min. I run a 120A ESC with them and have never had the Xt60s more than warm. Makes me wonder what XT90's can do? 120A con I'd think! On a side note, saw on HK a Multistar 20ah 6S pack LiHV, 2Ccon, 3Cburst with XT90s and 12AWG cables... HK must assign cables and connectors based on a capacity @ 20C formula, 16AWG is rated to 65A, XT60s are 60A, 3x20ah is 60A... and it's a lightweight pack, why add weight with heavy wires and connectors? (I also don't understand the long balance cables on Multistar packs, I shorten mine to ensure they don't have a meet&greet with my props.)
@ryandorman80058 жыл бұрын
+Aussie RC Playground digging back through the hk site your absolutely right, last I looked at them was right after your first mention of them and they were half the quantity, same $ in the us warehouses, also appears there has been a revision that thinned the housing a bit and deepened the groove the bullets snap into to alleviate some of the accidental solder whicking and assembly issue's, unless it's a misprint they may actually be cheaper than xt90 now. Still not something I plan on running, takes up more space, and inherantly not as idiot proof, and yes while you would have to work hard to short it, how often do people you know pick one up and check them out, 2 separated wires with compatible plugs in the hands of a looky loo = plugged in and shorted, remember that guy named murphy with a law written after him? it's a little piece of mind having a solid polarity keyed plug that more than easily handle's any load outside of a5th scale hv setup put on a connector, plus they take up a little less space, and are a little less involved or aggravating as far as assembly goes (the half cup design on the 60/90 is brilliant).

@AussieRCPlayground8 жыл бұрын
+etab83 I didn't show the Castle connectors because I don't have any. Plus, they are expensive and you still need a Y connector to run 2 batteries in series which renders their 200amp rating to be on par or bellow the XT150's rating. They do however gain that advantage if running a single pack. But as I said in the video, people will use what suits their needs and/or brand they prefer. I chose the XT150s because it suits my needs and budget. I'm not expecting everyone to change theirs just because I did, but hopefully you have some info that you can use to decide that for yourself.

4:01 you dismiss the 4mm bullet connectors very quickly, as if they're junk. These dirt-cheap connectors are easy to get, cost damn next to nothing in quantities of 10+ pairs, and are good for roughly 100A of current. Their only disadvantage is that they're quite stiff and difficult to connect/disconnect--a problem that's easier to manage if you slice the plastic connector housing in half, so they're separate :) A great dirt-cheap common connector for reasonably high currents.

Unfortunately those are not commonly used here (or in general) and are difficult to get. That's why I dismissed them.
