Mike, loving this series! Thank you! Have questions on MLB 172 ( most modern hulls) kit. 3 views I purchased from Newton Marine call out for nose of cockpit and front of sponsons to be made of hardwood blocks to shape. If there's one thing I've heard you say throughout the series is "eliminate weight, eliminate weight, eliminate weight." My ideas were hardwood block solid to shape, the same but hollowed out like you did Eliminator bull nose, balsa block with skin of 2 oz fiberglass or stick build to shape. Weight is in the front which may be needed. Thoughts? Other question is kit has what they call a shoe at rear on starboard side. What does this do and is it necessary? Would think it would cause a lot of drag. I don't recall the U-12 boat I'm building having a shoe but I may be wrong. Appreciate any insight you can shed on this first build. THX

The full size boats have played around with adding shoes to one side or the other or both many times over the years, so you would often see the same hull with different configurations from race to race. The starboard shoe you see on the plans was actually port side on the big boat, with it's purpose being to act as a sort of cantilever to lift the left rear and hold down the right front. Not bad theory, and it's still done to some extent. I think you could use it or not, and maybe even add it later if you felt it was needed. As for your wood blocks, you betcha. Shape 'em and then carve out the inside, probably with an aggressive Dremel burr or something similar. Just don't go too far!

Been watching all of your gasser video's, a few question. When the boat is all sheeted and sanded, what the next steps to get ready for paint. Also is there a rule of thumb for angle you would mount motor

Watch this video and seal the exterior exactly as you would the interior, then prime/sand/repeat to eliminate remaining flaws. As to the motor angle, it depends upon the motor's position horizontally in the boat and depth of the strut. My goal always is to keep the driveline as flat as is reasonably possible. To this end I usually create an engine well in order to lower the engine's position. Generally I'll land somewhere around 7° kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYmngJuAhdRggbs

@@M5PerfHydros Thanks for info Another question the kit I purchase from ML Boats has the motor bay off center and closer to turn fin. Should I center motor in the bay or mover 1/4 inch away from turn fin like you suggested in the motor install on The Gasser

Ah, bummer. Not an insurmountable problem, but still a bummer. Yes you will definitely need to offset the engine to the left of centerline (1/4" left of the center of the hull, NOT the center of the engine well). Due to the rotation of the engine plus the prop thrust RC boats always tend to lift the left sponson and you need to have that side weighted just slightly more than the right to compensate.

@@M5PerfHydros So I have to cut ribs and modify hull and maybe relocate cowl to center to cover motor. Why do they make models off center if we still center the motors?
