RC LiPo Internal Resistance Significance and its Link to C Rating

I learned a hard lesson on the 1st flight of my new plane.......CRASH near the ground, as I lost all control at the 5 min mark of flight and I was very close ( range wise ) .....I was using a very old 3S 2200mah LiPo....pretty sure the ESC went into LVC, although after checking the battery after the crash it showed voltage was 3.80 per cell ........I am now searching for a simple way to check IR in all my LiPos .......thanks for the video....

Yet another great piece of knowledge 🙏🙏 Got one question with ref to somekind of IR standards for a new (freshly bought) lipo pack. Is there any formula that one can use to distinguish if a new battery pack is in good condition based on the IR ? I know (from what you shared) that it depends on the capacity and C rating, but taking for example a 3S 1800mah 50C lipo pack - what would be the - correct IR values for a new battery pack ? And should the IR be measured at storage level, or full charge level ? Thanks again for the great piece of knowledge you bless us with 🙏🙏

Here is a video to determine the actual C rating of your LiPo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqXOZJ1vg7Fsoq8 Problem is, IR will not tell you if the pack is in good condition relative to the marketed C rating on the battery. Manufacture rarely are able to hit the advertised C rating in practice. But you can use the calculator as a relative measurement over the lifespan of the pack. Or also as a relative comparison against other packs from the same manufacture.

There are many low - mid - high end chargers that all provide the IR of the battery. I use a graupner polaron EX1400.

Hey Ryan, Just bout a 6s Turnigy. Should i write the base reading before my first charge/balance? Strait from the box to measure the ohms right?

Hello I would take the readings from your first charge to serve as the base. The readings should not change in the first several charges.

Hi Ryan, thanks again for another great video! I got back into the hobby again (racing 1/0 buggies) last year and also got my first lipo packs. I always try to take care of my batteries, but wasn't aware of IR... Is there a way to avoid or slow down the process of a IR that get's higher? Is there a way to get a battery healthy again? I recently bought a iCharger. Many thanks in advance for your advice/tips!

There are also other videos on the channel that will also speak to what you can do to your LiPo and what you should avoid doing to your LiPo. In short, there are many things you can do to avoid speeding up the process of degradation of a LiPo. (both in capacity and IR) However, if your battery has degraded, there is no way to return the battery back to original state. The reason this is true is because there is metal inside the battery that over time will be consumed.

One of my trucks has been overheating on the esc a lot recently, it has not done it before and I have used the same gearing over a year, I have rebuild and checked the motor and its very smooth. The driveline also has all new bearings, so you think it could be my battery causing the heat issues? It's a gens ace 5.2ah 45c in a team magic e5 with a 120a max10 sct with a 3660sl 3200 motor. I got both the battery and car at the same time around 2 years ago, its be run just over 30 times.

I would not immediately expect that the battery is causing you the overheating issues on the ESC. Would you know if the heat sync on the ESC is free of any debris that could get in there?

@@RCexplained yes there is a heatsink, which is completely cleaned and I replaced the fan recently as the old one had a missing blade.

@@RCexplained no it doesn't have data logs, after watching some more of your videos after writing this comment I did look at the resistance on my charger which is a different setting. The battery I mainly use was 12-16 mohms per cell, my other two 3s batteries are Turnigy heavy duty which are bigger and heavier are only 4-2mohms per cell. I will try one of those next time I run and see if it runs better.
