If you have not figured out how to stop your RC tires from ballooning then this video will show you a nice method.
Watch as I show you the difference between a taped SC tire and a non-taped tire in action. The difference is clearly displayed in regular and slow motion using a Traxxas Rally 1/10 with Pro-Line Racing Street Fighter SC tires and Split Six bead-locks.
Hope this helps anyone that does not know how beneficial it is to tape your tires to prevent ballooning. It's as simple as using a bit of Duct Tape and some time.
Thanks for watching and make sure to like and subscribe!

Great tip. Duct tape is strong and the glue they put on the duct tape is quite good so with a clean surface it's a great way of solving the ballooning. The tape is used on dirty HVAC ducting so I'm sure it's a great way to go with clean surface. It's better than drywall tape and shoe glue.

How thick is your tape? Or how many times a tire do you normally go? Have you ever tried taping the foam in it as well? I am not a fan of bead lock so I glue my tires and ever so often when racing I break a bead and throw that foam ring, the tire is kind of done at that point, then I gotta trade tires for the remainder and it’s time for new bead lock, just curious I imagine you have experimented this method. Last question have you ever tried “home foam method where you use spray foam inside your tires? It’s messy as hell, but if you add a little armourall or oil to the outside of rims and tires when the foam expands filling the outside of the tire it won’t stick to anything and will just break off when the tires and stick to the wheels or rims.

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I have not used the methods you described. They would be worth a try. Since duct tape works in most situations I have encountered, I never tried anything else. My main go-to to prevent ballooning is to find a proper foam...I like to use Crawler Innovation Deuces Wild foams for that purpose. If they do not have a solution, that is when the good old duct tape saves the day. 😎 Thanks for viewing and commenting.

I have found ballooning makes you go faster. Consistency is the loss....but whenever tires are ballooning (assuming the tire is good) the problem is with the powertrain's torque. In nitro vehicles, it's almost always the clutch

@Dcment
@Dcment 12 күн бұрын
I have not personally tried this method on the tires mentioned, so I cannot be 100% sure. At those speeds, I would feel that if you tried this method, it would be wise to possibly balance the tire after taping. But that is still an opinion, as I have no experience with the tires you mentioned. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Some people would use this method to keep the tires from ballooning which can cause unwanted handling characteristics. It’s a matter of choice really and this method has worked for me in the past. Now days, tire companies are making belted tires which handle the problem just as well if not better.

@NPCRC
@NPCRC 6 жыл бұрын
actually it is one layer of tape, 2 max for the higher 6S plus. The key is to heat the tape after installing as evenly as you can and then smooth it out and press it all down... The heat gun activates the glue creating a bind with the rubber, also making the tape fold and crease easier where needed

I think because there are so many different opinions on the subject of ballooning, they just leave it to the user to tailor his product to his liking. For people looking for control and speed...it would be nice, but for those that like aerial tricks and flips and such...I have heard some of them say ballooning helps out. :O To each his own I reckon. I would also suggest you glue the foam to the wheel. Also balance your wheels will help with keep you in a straight path
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Thanks for the comment! Balancing is that extra step that can work wonders on-road and off. Definitely, a positive move to balance the wheels after. I have tried balanced and unbalanced, and on my basher, it did not matter as much as on my on-road vehicles. All-in-all, good balancing is vital to the best performance. Gluing the foams to the wheel, I have never tried. I will have to see how that method works in the future. Thanks again.

Excellent video... really shows how far behind RC tire tech is compared to full scale tires. Past the research on rubber compounds used and foam padding with tread designs to work with the soft material these are little little more than improved toy "look alike" tires that behave poorly above 4S geared fast. Modern RC tires need to be made composite and use Kevlar and other materials available... this video shows how simple eliminating the most obvious problem is but this is just an important step in the right direction as far as real performance issues go. Any race car driver will tell you your tires are EVERYTHING and nothing works well if they don't work well. IMO RC Cars are only 50% real RC "hobby grade" scale models right now because the tires being used are still toy tires. It will take a large tire manufacture like Michelin that understands the complexity of building good tires to step in and do it right when the money available in the RC Car & Truck Hobby attracts them.... not sure what they are waiting for at this stage in the game... huge market with established cash flow increasing with FPV that needs round wheels. If you want see how bad RC tires and wheels are drive them FPV and you will see how out of round some are. You really notice your tires when you get in and drive the car yourself rather that watch it being driven LOS. You feel what's happening when you are inside the car and you want good tires and wheels in perfect balance to make the FPV view smooth when you hit the gas... remember the wheels are 4 gyros creating stability.... WHEN balanced well.

Can this be done with crawler tires for my fast desert truck? I want a narrow tire and cant seem to find any for my senton.
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol Жыл бұрын
This method can be done with any tire...BUT...I would look into some of the closed-cell foams for SC trucks that Crawler Innovation makes. I have used those for Short Course trucks, including my Senton, which has SC Raid wheels and SC tires from Pro-Line Racing. The Crawler Innovation foams are stiff and make for a very nice option to help ballooning and handling compared to the stock foams most tires come with. crawlerinnovations.com/deuces-wild/2-2-3-0/

Doesn't really matter that much, as all you are trying to do is scuff the surface a bit, so the tape sticks better. I use 400grit, 320grit before, and 600 as well. I wouldn't go too fine like over 1000 grit, but don't go too low like 100 grit. My experience lies with the grits I mentioned so, if you would like to try some different, feel free to. Will this work on a 100mph application?
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol 7 жыл бұрын
A 100 mph application would most likely include some belted tires, like the ones on the XO. I have tested this on a 75mph system and it worked fine though...but at 100 mph speeds, traction becomes an issue also, if the tires are not rated for such speeds. There are speed tires out there like some of the foams and belted products which would not require taping. If you try it, let us know how it works out. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I've never actually had a car/truck that has enough speed for the tires to ballon, but whats so bad about it anyways?
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol 8 жыл бұрын
+Stefano Gamer Well..when the tires balloon, there is a lot less contact with the ground, so you lose a lot of control of the vehicle. It also can make the tires expand enough to hit your RC body while accelerating. Not good. :)

sorry if i sound ignorant but i dont see the point in taping tires to stop ballooning for offroad anyway. the way i see it if your pinned down a straight and your tires are ballooning then there is less tire contact with the track -so less friction= more speed? i understand that there is loss of grip also, but their not usually ballooning around corners and while acelerting were grip is needed. if you get what im trying to say
@Radiocontrolpatrol
@Radiocontrolpatrol 8 жыл бұрын
What your saying depends on the type of motor setup. With a high power setup you will get ballooning in corners as well if your in loose terrain. The method is for those that want to stop balooning, if your not getting that...not for you. :) In my case...it worked well for me, considering driving while ballooned is VERY different than not ballooning. Tested and tried time after time. Much better ride and control without the ballooning. But as I said, not for everyone or every situation.

+Radio Control Patrol im running a 10.5 on a 80amp esc system which is the max turns for 2wd mod sct in my country and i dont get tire balooning while turning while turning unless im doing donuts and my truck starts to diff out. but i can understand how that happens with 4wd vehicles when turning and on loose terain were it may become necessary but surely if ballooning was a consistent negavite characteristic tire manufacturers would change so the didnt do it. and i get what your saying

I understand totally. The problem is not that big of a deal for most people, so companies will not change how they design tires for the small crowd of RC powermongers out there. Methods like this can help if needed! If you don't need to tape them...no worries...For me...worked like a charm and much more stable. Thanks for commenting and viewing...have a nice weekend my friend.

good walkthrough. just wondering what the advantage of doing this is? And one thing I can definitely say helps is to balance your wheel/tire after mounting the tire. I use dynamite balancing tape since it's light. It may take more of the weights to balance heavier beadlocks and rock crawler setups, but anything that goes fast it will run much smoother when the wheels/tires aren't out of balance. This is probably more useful for on road vehicles and high speed buggies or trucks than a crawler.

Please excuse my newbie question but my understanding is that you vent your tires for two purposes. 1. to keep your tires from ballooning as much, and 2. To allow any debris or moisture/water that might be I’ve gotten inside to expel. Personally I’d rather not put holes in my tires if I don’t have to, but could you kindly set me straight on this topic? Thank you very much for the wonderful videos!

But isn't ballooning a good thing? Isn't it like changing gears? Drag tires ballon.
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol 8 жыл бұрын
On an R/C the ballooning can make the tire explode sometimes, and on a 4x4 it can make steering very difficult. You are right, drag tires do balloon, some of it is due to the air pressure in the slicks. Notice how after the burnout they bounce a bit.

+Rafael Rosales I look at it like this...Everyone is not running 3s and ballooning as shown in the video. For some they will never experience this matter. So for those of us that want more than the tire can handle...there are other options...or...methods as shown in my vid. :) Grip wise, design wise...Pro-Line is doing their job.

If you mean, to the wheel? Yes, if you have that style of wheel, in the video I used beadlocks, so no glue was needed. If you meant, adding a layer of glue after the tape...I have never used glue with tape, the tape has been enough for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Do you like the split six beadlocks better than SC rims that need to be glued? What are the upsides of beadlocks instead of glued rims? What are the downsides?
@DaveofRCPatrol
@DaveofRCPatrol 6 жыл бұрын
I will not say I like one over the other. They both have their purposes. I like the beadlocks simply because tire changing is easy. When you wear out a set of tires you can just unscrew and change them out. Glued tires are a little more hard to change up. Performance wise...the beadlocks on higher power systems will allow the bead t he come loose sometimes. Not all the time but if your doing a lot of tire off the ground throttling...lol..then the ballooning and stretching of the tire will pull out of the beadlock. So for those situations...glued is better. Hope that helped.
