People talk about tire stickiness as if you’re relying on it to “stick” to something like spiderman… stickiness doesn’t get your crawler over rocks and up steep hills, soft gummy compound that allows good conformity (≠ sticky) and good tread design are what make a crawler tire work.

@@arkansasrcnewbie All you have to do is clean tires with simple green and a brush. Once dry, soak them with wd 40. That's it. Don't just wipe wd40 on the tread area. Like the above post states it's about softening the entire tire, not just the tread. It's the solvents in the wd40 or pb that do the work, the tire soaks it in.
@brianl426 Жыл бұрын
Spray wd40 on to a painters trim brush and just brush the tread and let them sit overnight. Just a thin coat to cover the tread is all you need. Have done this for years on crawler and other tires. It helps. Cheap rubber tires it has no effect on.

WD40 not only improves the tread, it is penetrative and hydrates plastic and rubber. When I get a new truck, I saturate the whole truck in WD40 overnight with regular re-applications. Wheels, Chassis, rods, and linkages... everything. Then I'll let everything drain off and blow it all down with a compressor. It tripples the life of your rubbers and adds incredible elasticity and strength to plastic. It's fantastic on plastic Chassis' and Wishbones.

I would just use tire sauce. The reason races don't use chemicals to soften tires is because it weakens the Integrity of the rubber and they fall apart and do exactly what you're tired did. We use tire sauce the day of racing, it sokes into the rubber and makes em sticky but we wear them out that day. You could probably use some sauce and you don't have to put it on the sidewall and get the result you're looking for. There are various processes, but yeah just try some traction compound I think you'll get the result you want

I just spray them lightly while spinning on the RC. I have a heavily modified MN86 1/12 crawler and it is difficult to get good quality tires for it so I iust bought a generic variety (maybe OEM injora). WD40 makes them softer after applying. However, I feel that the WD40 - trailing - washing with soap cycles are making my tire treads harder in the long run. If your comp class allows it, siping the treads may give you more performance improvements. But of course, your mileage may vary. Thanks for doing this experiment!

Use wd40 all the time to soften tires for racing. Bag first then remove from the bag and set in the sun again to cook off. Softer=sticky. Also simple green will do the same thing. Just because it doesn't feel like it worked does not mean it hasent. Mount them up and use them and you will see the difference. Also while using this process tires should be on the wheels

With wd40 you just need to soak them and they will soften up for a while not sticky. If you want sticky go with the pb blast or some tire sauce like fdj. then when you work them on the cloth take them to the point of smoking. that will open the pours up and the tires will get gummy

If you think the Injoras are nice try out the JConcepts - 1.0" Rupures (63mm) in the green compound. But they will cost close to $40.00 to $50.00 for a set of four tires depending on where you perchase them from, but they are by far the best 1.0" crawler tires you can put onto any 1/24 & 1/18 scale rig. You will certainly not be disappointed in there crawling performance compared to any Injora tire available.

So basically what it's doing is very quickly degrading the outer surfaces of the rubber, with that penetrating oil that is WD40. Does it make them stickier? Well... Yeah ... because it's breaking down the rubber compound kind of like leaving soft rubber in the sunlight for a long time will cause it to turn sticky and goopy ...and fall apart. They're not falling apart right now because there exposure to this rubber degrading solvent was short-term so it hasn't had time to penetrate into the middle or the depth of the rubber. But I'd really like to see what someone's results are I'm really soft Tyres a couple years later after soaking them in WD40...

I have been using Simple Green for years. Never tried WD40 or Silicone Lube but I wouldn't think they would work all that well. I have heard others using Acetone for a few minutes. That stuff will eat through plastic and rubber pretty quick so I wouldn't really suggest it unless you are trying to strip glue off a rim and tire. And even then, I prefer the bake method.
