“Emma” is a DIY R/C sailboat made of plywood from plans found at:
www.bearospaceindustries.com/b...
This video shows “Emma” sailing, and gives you a close look at some of her details. “Emma” is one meter (39-3/8”) long, weighs 6.1 kg (13-1/2 lbs). Her mast, fin, and rudder are removable for easy transport.
You can make your own sails for “Emma” with tips from my DIY sailmaking video:
• RC Sailboat Build - DI...
Or you can purchase sails made just for “Emma” from respected model sailmaker Rod Carr:

@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Edwin, Thanks for your comment. The sail control on Emma is accomplished with a SAIL ARM SERVO (HiTec HS-765HB) rather than a winch system. The servo arm simply pulls the sheets in, and wind in the sails pulls the sheets out..
@wellardbr
@wellardbr 6 жыл бұрын
I regret having opted for a winch servo - I am having a hard time finding the right length of string for the winch loop, and nowhere in KZbin can you find a tutorial on this basic technique to control sails... I will eat up the 250 shekels it cost me, but buy an arm servo for my next project.

Yes, It's a mobius camera with pan/tilt and fav mounted on a schooner Irene, with gaff rig. We use a screen, and joystick on the transmitter with 2 spare channels for the pan/tilt servos. It's a handful to sail the boat at the same time as you film, but it's possible with some practice. you do have to stop filming once in a. while to make sure you're not about to run into the dock. When the boat you are filming turns, that's a cue.

A static model (billing boats kit) is very hard to make watertight, and even harder to balast. To get something like that afloat, you'd probably end up building the hull, and use that to make a inverse "plug" that you use to build a fiberglass reinforced polyester hull having the same proportions. Then build the superstructure upon that polyester hull. After that the fun starts, because you have to control the rigging somehow. That will take some experimentation! There are very little square rigged RC boats on youtube. The fact that there are examples out there at least means that it it is feasible. But you must not be in a hurry :) Check kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5THeauuibmgbqM

Gary, I've watched this video dozens of times and am on the fence about trying this build. I do NOT have a shop full of "bench" type power tools (saws, drill press, etc.). How practical is it to build this boat with hand tools only? I do have great patience so I would not rush the build. Also, how do you treat your boat hulls in general? Do you fiberglass the hulls, or use just a painting/ coating system of some sort? If you have a video on this, I haven't found it yet. Enjoy watching your videos , so relaxing to watch, great channel.
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for bringing up the "build" topic. I built my Emmas with mostly hand tools. I did make use of a cordless drill and a hand held saber saw. The saber saw was used to cut the wooden mold for the lead ballast, and fitted with a metal cutting blade, was used to cut the aluminum fin keel. All other cutting can be done with hand saws. I fiberglass only the inside surfaces of the fin trunk and the rudder. The hull & deck I paint, inside and out, beginning with clear penetrating epoxy sealer (very thin epoxy) to seal the plywood.

I've asked this on another of your videos. Why is the fin so long? Is it primarily for grip to windward? A simple tank test for stability would show it could be a lot shorter.
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking about this Jonathan. Ultimate stability can be retained with a much shorter fin but heeling angle will be greater. I encourage folks to build the long fin if pond depth permits. I have discussed shortening the fin for 'Emma' in another video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp_NdnaDlLCqatU I did spend considerable effort "tank testing" in real life wind & waves of the Pacific Ocean, west coast of Mexico. Words cannot do this boat, or commentary justice. QUESTION. Does the keel need to be so long?
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim for asking about the keel length. I suggest that the keel be this long if your sailing pond is deep enough to allow it. If depth is a problem, the keel can be shortened 3 inches (7.5cm) with the same ballast, or even 6 inches (15cm) if an extra pound (.5kg) of lead is added.

I am sorry I did not buy an arm servo for the sail boat I am building. The winch is difficult to set up, the right length of string to use is hard to come at. An arm servo has no complication to it. I was dumb buying the winch.
@Verklunkenzwiebel
@Verklunkenzwiebel 6 жыл бұрын
If you install the winch such that it drives a loop of string on the inside of the boat, you can tie a jib and a mainsail sheet to that loop. The loop stays below deck (run it through a block in the bow of the boat). Envisage the winch at the back of the boat, the loop running along the inside of the hull forward to the block in the bow, and back to the winch. So the loop leaves the winch, runs starboard side to the block, comes back port side to the winch. Now tie a string that acts as a sheet to that loop, and run it through a small hole in the centerline of the deck to your sail. Operate the winch, and notice that as the loop travels, it pulls in the sheet. Experiment to find the required length of travel in fully drawn and full slack.
