Nice! I kinda want one of those models with a fanestron, but I've been put off of getting one because of the issues people are having getting them to work right and mainly the clearance issues with the blades. I instead elected to built a Mercy Flight livery of a Bell 429 GlobalRanger and just maidened it yesterday. I've put together 4 Roban models now, and while they look nice, their quality is pretty hit or miss. The biggest issues I've had with their models are the drilled holes and placements for scale parts. For example, the holes in the fuselage for the side steps on the 429 I just built don't even come close to matching the mounting pegs on the side steps. The holes for the windshield wipers are crooked and offset to the right-side of the windshield. The collective stick on the right-side of the heli is in the wrong place... it should be on the left-side of the pilot's seat. The hole in the doghouse for the main shaft was punched out in the wrong spot causing the swash links to not clear the opening. Stupid stuff like that. John, even on your heli... that's the first time I've seen a Roban model NOT have the buttons painted on the center console. Oh well. At any rate, I still love my 429 and AIRWOLF models because they look great and fly well! I hope yours turn out well and I look forward to seeing your upcoming build videos.
@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
Well stated Carlos and I agree 100% going by my previous Roban build along with a few other guys I know with Robans' (one with the exact same Mercy Flight 429 you have). I suppose we can live with these minor annoyances considering the alternative is spending at least double on a Vario and we would still have to finish, fit doors (I hate fitting doors) & paint it. If you know how horrible my painting skills are, you know how badly I would botch a Vario build. 🙃 Oh well, we'll find out soon enough what kind of headaches I run into with this fenestron, but that's largely why I wanted one - for that added challenge. Great to hear you just maidened your 429 - have fun with it and the wolf. 👍

Hey John, the ec-130 is one of the coolest looking helis in my opinion. I actually have one in my wish list at Motion. I’m looking forward to the build and to your choice of electronics. Ive heard some guys say with a fenestron you need a high torque tail servo, others say a standard tail servo is fine. Have fun with the build!

Hi Michael - be patient mate, but I too can't wait to get started on the build. Just waiting on a few more components (motor & ESC), and of course some free time before I can do the next video. I did do a review of that Roban AS350 I got several years ago on my website so you may be interested in that as well. www.rchelicopterfun.com/scale-as350-helicopter.html As I said in the video here, Roban uses the same set of mechanics in all their helis (used to be called Compactor now called HSM). They have definitely improved a few things on the mechanics such as better tail drive system, better geometry bell cranks, and now using full carbon instead of G10 frames. As for the fuselage itself; definitely better fiber glass quality, paint quality, and better interior details.

None. Learn on pod & boom first, and only once you master all upright orientations and rarely if ever crash, then you can start considering scale. I cover this scale topic in detail on my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/scale-rc-helicopters.html

@Rchelicopterfun Жыл бұрын
If you're a beginner, stay well away from any scale collective pitch heli, especially a Roban Super Scale. They are for advanced & experienced modelers with a good deal of large collective pitch building & flying experience. About the only thing less beginner friendly would be a large turbine powered model. Learn on smaller Pod & boom helis first, slowly working your way up to large ones. Once you rarely if ever crash anymore, you'll be experienced enough to take on a large scale build.

What a beautiful ship! John, I am awaiting delivery of my Flywing FW200. When I get proficient flying, I would like to install a scale MD500 fuselage. I see Roban makes them, and there are some videos of them installed on a FW200, but they are all Japanese posters. How difficult do you think that project would be?
@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
Sorry no idea. As with any scale build when pairing off the shelf mechanics with any fuselage - likely lots of customization involved. My FunKey fuselage page on my website shows all the major dimensions you have to take into account when sizing up any fuselage to any set of mechanics regardless of brand or size: www.rchelicopterfun.com/funkey-fuselages.html
@rondiiulio70442 жыл бұрын
hi John, who did you purchase this from? approximate cost? Do you have an ongoing heli site? I used to fly since the 80’s. Then I spent the last 20 years doing drones. I just wish Funkey would offer some new fuselages! Like this EC130...
@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
@Jan R - Yes. The obvious issue would be finding a set of mechanics that would work. No off the shelf set has a 12:1 or thereabouts tail rotor gearing ratio (needed for a fensestron to work) nor any off the shelf fenestron tail rotors. I think for any scale fenestron model to exist, we are bound by the very few boutique scale RC heli manufacturers that offer them; both the fuselage and the mechanics specifically designed to fit them (Vario, Roban, Helikopter-Baumann & Heli Factory). I think there is one other manufacture as well that offers fenestron mechanics, but I can't recall the name??? Of of them all, Roban is by far the most affordable option 🙂

"Don't crash" Brilliant advice for any large scale RC heli from any boutique manufacturer be it Alterbaum, Heli-Factory, Vario, etc. Regardless, never had much of an issue getting Roban parts. Easier, faster, & cheaper to import than Heli-Factory or Vario.

@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
@eduardo sierra - I've purchased Roban parts from both RC Aerodyne when they were the North American Roban dealer, and have purchased a few parts from Motion RC since they took over Roban. Never the main gear however; only tail drive gears and a couple shafts. Sounds like you went right to Roban which from what I've read in the Roban threads always works, so it's unfortunate you are not hearing back from them??? Covid has caused major issues over there as you likely know, so all I can think is they are running on a skeleton crew? Keep pestering them would be my advice. Motion will generally special order Roban parts in, have you checked with them? You may also want to contact RC Aerodyne in the off chance they might still have some Roban parts hiding in the back corner of the shop. Last options would be to contact one of the other Roban dealers around the world (UK, France, New Zealand, etc.). I've actually contacted the New Zealand dealer (RC Hobbies New Zealand), when I was looking for this kit and they were super helpful at getting me a quote and came in at a better price than Motion. The shipping of course from New Zealand to Canada was over double, so it still made more sense to order from Motion. Anyway, they really seemed like good folks, but so were Tim & Ed at motion. 🙂

Fenistron is nice but I think NOTAR is a better system. Right, you probably spent $100 or $250 going to Canada. oouch
@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
May I ask why? Only one RC helicopter manufacturer I know of with a NOTAR model and that is Vario's MD900 which from what I've read & heard from a few who have flow it has extremely poor authority. Perhaps you know of one which works better? If so I would like to know. As for import costs into Canada for this kit (shipping, brokerage, cross boarder taxes) more like $550.

@@Rchelicopterfun Like i said oouch on the cost lol. I was speaking in terms of NOTAR over Fenistron on real Helicopters but I know my friend duplicated the youtube video of the Blade 230S in scale body with NOTAR. It flies well. Do you think direct drive tails or full collective tails are better?

Actually closer to $4K once electronics, LiPo's and shipping/import fees are added and worth every cent considering a comparable sized, fenestron equipped Vario, Alterbaum, or Heli Factory large scale RC helicopter would be at minimum double that. I know I couldn't put this package together for $2.4K considering the amount of time/cost spent with the molds, fiberglass layup, finishing, painting, fitment, and amount of carbon and aluminum machined parts all included. Hell, most of Vario's 160-170mm feneston tail mechanisms alone are over $800 USD. I suppose only scale RC helicopter enthusiasts who understand the hobby along with the work and time that goes into a kit like this can appreciate the value it offers.
