These are the best R2D2 build videos out there. Great work on this, and even more respect now that I have started my own and realize getting this type of finish is a lot of work. Well done!

Thanks & glad you like them - have fun with your build, it's such a great project 🙂👍

If you zoom in on r2 in the deathstar control room, there is lines in his dome. Your dome looks spot on, even the blue base on front holoprojector

Looks perfect, looks like it's made from metal with the finish you have obtained, preparation and final finish is time time well spent. I would hate to think the man hours you have put in.when I was younger I had a thing about everything looking new and shiny then I discovered the retro aged look which was more realistic..R2D2 went through battles and sandstorms I think retro look with not so perfect finish adds the finished look....just my preference everyone is different....really enjoying this build it's a change from the Heli scene...thank you for sharing John.

Thanks John! Watching this helps me keep going with my build! I’m still sanding and priming the dome. Learning a LOT from your videos!

Well I know very little about 3D printers. But I have always wanted one, I am a massive R2D2 fan, from watching your videos I am now researching 3D printers for a future investment, I am going to take this project on, I understand it's going to be over 12 months from reading others that have built R2D2. Fantastic videos John, look forward to future ones

Glad you like them Gary. The next one (part 5 - body) should be out Tomorrow or Tuesday. Hope you are able to get your R2 project underway as well - so well worth it. 🙂 Only little bit of advice (from a totally new R2 builder as well) is don't put a time limit on it; build it at your own speed. It will be a more enjoyable experience. Adam Savage has a few good R2 videos and his time scale range is 2 to 20 years - lol; granted his group of builders fabricated everything from scratch without the amazing resources we now have. BTW, the video he recently did on Grant Imahara's R2 is touching. If you haven't seen it, well worth the watch IMO - just for the back stories: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIbGXp16oLWsoM0

Looks good 👍🏼 An imperfection here and there is no issue, R2 have been around and got some patina 😎
@Rchelicopterfun3 жыл бұрын
@Mickael Jansson - Very true. I've read/seen by adding weathering, you can also hide or blend out lots of little mistakes. Undecided if I'll add weathering once the project is completed or not. Still a long way to go before I'm at that stage in the build. 🙂

Just printed the last piece for the dome on my sovol. Thank you so much for your help. And I'm ticking the parts off as I go in the printed version of the print guide as well as online on astromech and baddeley.

John. You make so much motivation for this Build. I have watched your build set over 30+. Ok im slow,lol. My son and I wanted to visit Canada this year. Would you be ok for fans of your build, to see your R2? We may need to pick your brain...If that's ok

Morning John. Fitting holo servos time for me. After finally getting all dome parts ready and painted. What sketch are you using to make the servos do that full range motion. I would like to use it to test my servo range. Thanks

Incredible! How much did it cost to complete the head?
@Rchelicopterfun Жыл бұрын
@theblevsreview - Sorry, I never tallied up just the head. In the last video of this series, I tallied up the entire build however if that is of any interest: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXrTc3Rsis6airM If I had to take a wild guess on the head alone, maybe $400-500? Keeping in mind overlap with paint, filament, hardware, electronics and various build consumables shared with rest of the build.

John looking at the files do you intend building the MK2 or MK3 Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it somewhere else........ can't wait for the rest of the videos
@Rchelicopterfun2 жыл бұрын
@Garry Griffiths - It's the MK3. I actually just uploaded part 5 of the build series which goes over the MK3 body assembly. 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2e5iadsi6yNacU

Hi Jason - Shoe Goo. I also used Amazing Goop (almost the same stuff).

Looking great! As for the imperfections in the silver -- could you clear coat that silver with something like a 2K clear coat and the polish it up after it cures to help get rid of that? Also, did you need up gluing the pie plates in on top, or will you animate those with servos later on?
@Rchelicopterfun3 жыл бұрын
@Elixir Graphics. I did a couple paint tests on failed print pieces with clear over the metallic aluminum Rustoleum 2X and I didn't the look at all. Once the clear went on, it took away the "metal" look. Basically looked like silver car paint - nothing like what R2's dome looked like in the movies. Regardless, once the first little bit of Rub-N-Buff hit that dome, there was no going back since any paint would no longer stick to the wax coating. I never wanted any moving panels on this build, all pies had been glued in place by the end of the video. 🙂

what are you using to power the dome electronics? i know you had it hooked up to your variable power supply for testing purposes but is there a battery youre using for when its assembled?
@Rchelicopterfun18 күн бұрын
I'm running 24VDC up to the dome through the slip ring from the main 6S LiPo battery packs I use to power all of R2. I then use two adjustable DC/DC buck converters to regulate the 24V feed voltage up in the dome down to what the specific electronics in the dome operate at (5VDC and 3VDC). This is all covered in the electronics videos of the series.

Hey John...it's me again. LOL...sorry for all of my questions. I am noticing that your PSI mounts have both ends open. When I 3D print the PSI mounts from Mr Baddeley's files, one side is completely closed off. I am missing something?
