Ive never seen such shocking suspension on a car in my life 😁 but it does drive well. I can see these becoming the car to beat at the vintage events. So many upgrades allready. There are some better alloy diff housings coming or out allready from custom rc i think, they give it the kick up at the front that is missing on the rere. I will get another one at some point. But not in a rush, going to wait and see what over rere’s come this year 🤔

Very nice car. I have to agree with many other people. I think this car is too expensive. If you add on the cost of the upgrades you did it is even more expensive. Thoughts?

Yes in the EU and UK this kit ended up costing way more than it should.

Do Yokomo offer different springs for the shocks? Could you try different oil?

The issue is the travel of the shocks is really limited

You can easily add more droop by changing to a longer shock eyelet. Schumacher Vintage series springs are a good place to look for springs with different rates.

This car is already quite different from the original. Next it was made for a loose dirt track with some bumps (not modern jumps). Btw...YZ4 shocks will work... I have them on a 94 YZ10.

That steeeing extension looks about 25 mm long. Seems like a bad idea. Huge overhung load into the servo output bearings and torsion in the control arm. There has to be a better way.

Nice. I find that nearly every kit except the most hardcore racing ones including vintage kits have way too heavy springs. Most of the time the suspension isn't working at all. If you watch most footage in slowmo you can see it just bouncing around at the top of the suspension travel all the time. Vintage Tamiya kits are notorious for this. Great big yellow shocks doing literally nothing. I bought a nice looking aluminum shock kit for my tt02 mustang and it is really nice and also includes 5 sets of springs! I thought surely this would be fantastic.. Yeah racing I believe. To my infinite disappointment, all five springs are waaay too hard for the weight of the car. No suspension travel at all. If your car weighs 1kg and your shocks take 2kg of pressure to compress, your shocks will do nothing. (off road cars DO need more because of jumps but this is where having lots of travel helps.) I ended up measuring the spring tension with a scale and using a dremel, ground down the inside of the springs until they were much softer and all 4 had roughly the same rate when done. I matched the rates to the running weight of the specific car. A pain in the butt to do 200 bucks labor on a 40 buck shock kit BUT it now is amazing and the car is utterly transformed. The tires never leave the ground even on rough road. It's really good. If your rc handles crap, your springs are too stiff! Most are. The only kit I've ever had with good springs out of the box is: you guessed it, the original rc10. perfect from day one. cheers

Why didn’t you fit the top deck then turn it over and swap the chassis - you wouldn’t have had to completely strip it apart then?

That could work thinking about it. Not sure if you would get snagged on the central belt rail fitments or end up working on too many parts of the car at one time but I would have to try it to see. I like to change as little as possible on each step to keep track of the bolts.

Yep it’s an improvement but I won’t know just how much until I replace the shocks as that’s really hampering the performance on carpet

I have placed an order for a YZ10, so funding such a massive RC project for the channel has taken all the channels resources. I was going to sell the 870c to help but I was gifted a generous amount of money so I could keep it longer until I’ve finished making content on it.

I ran this car for a loooong time back in the day. There's a reason why the front springs are soo stiff... It's to help give the car a "nose up" attitude when jumping since more weight (relative back in the day) was put towards the front of the car. Back then, this car ran on dirt and we always struggled to have enough bite on the rear to get the car to make the big jumps (jumps were also bigger back in the day). Running on offroad carpet did not exist 30 years ago. The issue with your car now is that you have way too much bite from the front tires. It's making the front twitchy and you can't even keep it straight on the straights. Also seems like you have a lot of front tow out which exacerbates the issue. The upgrade that I would do from stock is that I would install "modern" wing mounts on the rear shock towers. I ran full carbon back in the day, but admittedly couldn't feel the difference (assuming same shock positions) compared to the OE fiberglass. I got the carbon for the multiple shock positions. The truly "must have" mod is an aluminum front ball diff/suspension carrier. The OEM magnesium ones (if that's what they are still made of) were too brittle.

Cool info and yep the wing mount has to go. Like you say, setup still needs some work but I need to swap the shocks over first and then start to balance the grip level front and rear. I think it can become a good carpet racer but it does need some work for sure as like you say, it wasn’t designed for carpet back then as it just didn’t exist. More to come soon :)

Its amazing what a difference chassis stiffness makes to how an rc drives, I did a carbon chassis swap to one of my race TT-02's and for £80 its was the biggest difference I have seen the dam thing drives so fast it was so easy to win the A finals with it and it was easily beating TT-02S and sr chassis even with the stock TT-02 arms, Nice vid too and im guessing ya will love the insta cam :)

Off topic, but I don't know how to contact you. I've always been interested in rc cars, but I have never done anything about it. I think I'm too old to race now (54) but very interested in building. Love your channel! I'm big into motorbikes, so I might try a model first and then progress to rc models. I love the complexity of the trucks, and aim to build one in the future

When the YZ came out, it wasn't designed for carpet, it was full dirt racing. The dialed in setup for carpet will take quite a while, as it's just not for today's races
