The guy from crawler canyon, among his extensive testing, got to a conclusion, that hobbywing must have picked 1200kv and 1800kv with different axles in mind. He also said, 1200kv for straight axles, 1800kv for portals.

That's logical. I agree with that assertion 😎

Need to get under drive-in both axles and the smallest pinion you could fit on it... & then it will have low speed control & more torque all the way around! Great video Greg 🤜🤛🤟!

I didn't think of changing diff gears. Good idea! I do have a 9t pinion here which will fit, I really should have added it already. Still running an 11t I'm pretty sure... Just checked, I've already installed a 9t, so there you go! I'll have to think about the underdrive gears, that's not a bad idea! Thanks! -Craig (sounds like Greg, I get that a lot!)

Hey no worries! I used the SSD one. Drove it heaps but eventually I did break one of the front axles. You can see it happen in the RGT Pro Runner video, '4 Hours of Mud' from late last year. This one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iF7dZGWCZpici6M It's a good kit though. Dunno if mine was just bad luck or not.

It would be fun to see if a different set of wheels would help, but I probably wouldn't spend too much more money on this configuration. For a moment, I was thinking maybe a little weight down low would help, but then you said it already has some brass. For rock crawling, this particular model seems to thrive on its portals. I think it's a bit like you said, decide whether its focus is rocks or trails and understand the limitations one focus brings over another. Related to servos, I've been watching Crawler Canyon and he's found good performance in the Flash Hobby servos if you can get those for your affiliate links. At least in the US, they offer some really affordable direct power and receiver powered servos. That JX in the Bronco seems to be doing great too 🤙
@RCTNT2 жыл бұрын
I'll stick with jx servo since I know and like them for value and performance, even aside from the affiliate link thing. My other fave is the Holmes Hobbies brushless servos, they're just epic.

I think if ya had longer shocks on that it would create more droop for the tires to grab when high centered! Interesting video tho…there’s always a sacrifice when changing something …even adding weight down low can present problems!

You could well be right there. I experimented with the Phoenix Portal when it came out and found an extra 10mm on the shocks made a night and day difference. Nothing's free in physics! Cheers for the thoughtful comment!

Fair enough. After all the testing we've done with so many tires on this channel, I don't think it's necessary to replace the canyon trails, unless you want larger diameter tires. They're simply excellent oem tires!

I think it’s capable of becoming a very good crawler if you really wanted. I’m always surprised when I take mine out it doesn’t tip over that easy I do have some wide tires & metal beadlocks upgraded servo because the original went out quickly. I just had mine out & it had sat for awhile but it’s a very good RC even with just a few upgrades. Does replacing the motor & Esc cause any interference with the 2 speed & diff locks? Let’s say you but in a brushless how does that effect it? I would like to replace the motor & Esc but don’t want to mess with the other functions. Very interesting video thanks.
@RCTNT2 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely a solid machine. Love the TRX4 platform; ever since release I've thought Traxxas really hit it out of the park with this design. Brilliant. You can stick a brushless system in, no problem. The main thing to note is that you want 6v going to the Receiver and shifting servos. Your steering servo can run on a separate BEC at whatever higher voltage you may want. All else is just fine :)

@@RCTNT that could be a really cool build. Because I definitely think it was better at crawling with portals, that said I love how the tires tuck up into the fenders
@RCTNT2 жыл бұрын
Oh it was clearly better with portals. But for this one, all out performance wasn't the primary goal! A strong secondary goal, but straight axles number one :)
@modzilla742 жыл бұрын
If u do decide to put the hi lift kit on, make sure to remove the limiting spacers on the shocks. For maximum travel and flex
@RCTNT2 жыл бұрын
I tend to evaluate on a build by build basis. Sometimes extra travel takes away from performance, depending on intended purpose. Thanks for the tip!

@RCTNT2 жыл бұрын
While that's true, it'd be inefficient - though better than the 2300kv Fusion Pros I have here. I do have an AXE R2 1400kv that'd probably be the ticket for this thing, though I am happy with the 45T brushed now. I misspoke in the video and am already running a 9T pinion, so that leaves underdriven diff gears as a last resort. Honestly I'm pretty happy with the speed now. It doesn't feel too fast anymore, just a little on the higher side of ideal. Is good :) (Of course, larger tires will blow that out of the water and I may need to reconsider. We'll see!)

On some tires it really does, like the Boom Racing Hustler M/TX, which really benefited from it. Others, like the Traxxas Canyon Trail and similar Proline BFG Krawlers may benefit from it, but it depends on the foams and the weight of the rig they're under. Best advice I have is to try it and see. On the bright side, you probably (probably) won't make them much worse if it turns out to not help, but you might also find some gains. Find a way to test and measure performance too, so you can make an informed decision. Happy modding!
