@@edawn7615 The problem with Math and why a lot of people find it difficult is because it's a step by step process. Mathematics as a whole is HUGE and very complex. But anything that is complex is made out of simple parts. And the problem is, most people in school miss a critical step, because they actually physically miss a day of school and never catch up, and/or they don't have time to formally practice and solidify the concept in their minds. The key is at first learning critically, then understanding it intuitively. You can't do Calculus if you don't know how fractions work, or you don't know algebra.

My parents are both teachers and they can’t even guide me on studying that’s why I’m trying hard to do the “self study” and It’s hard. I always told myself chemistry wasnt for me, never fit me the way schools taught it. I had a major life change that made me chage my major to biology, and I had to pass a placement test to get in the program. I bought a digital course for 25 bucks and taught myself 3 semesters of chemistry in 1 month. I will never see anything the same. I passed the test 29/30 and I am now teaching myself physics and stats. It's amazing that I taught myself in one month what I couldnt learn in my lifetime.

Honestly, idk why we are pretending this is a woke discussion. Before kids were in school, they were doing labor and working jobs (you would know this if you payed attention lol). I think the school system could use some changes, but I am not here for raising a generation of academically limited kids because school is "boring or hard". You should learn how to read and write, and more while young. And you should learn the practical skills like self discipline, time management, and learning about yourself in school. Yes, kids should also be playing and exploring but why not do both?

I was homeschooled... I was always determined to do better every year, to apply myself and form better habits. But then I'd end up on the couch pretending to "read" history (a subject I would theoretically enjoy) while falling asleep and skimming just enough to ace the tests. What's my excuse? The textbooks were so dry. You're talking about history, a record of real people who lived and made an impact of the world and did amazing things. And what do you want me to learn? The dates and places. UGH. Dates and places have a reason, but not at the expense of understanding the historical events themselves.

I think we could also do with studying more original source material like ACTUALLY reading parts of letters and treatises written by our founding fathers. thats why i really respect my history teacher. he doesnt make us learn dates cuz thats boring!! he lets us understand the history through class discutions, reading old documents, letting us choose the way he'll grade us and more. he really makes us understand the concepts and sometimes we have to act like the people from the history books and recreate it. he leaves room for creativity and even though im terrible at history his classes still inspire me to learn more. i mean my best grades come from his classes (literally got an A+ and an A- the last 2 years)

You know, people always say, “Oh, you’re just smart and talented,” or, “It’s natural skill, I could never be as smart as you,” just because I get straight A’s, just because I work so hard to be the best version of myself. But I think nobody realizes how much of a pain it is, and how sad of a fact it is that I’m not really learning anything, because all I do is work for the grade, never for my interest of learning. Get a bad grade? Oh, they say it’s your fault, that you’re not enough. So we are in a sense brainwashed to get good grades, because that “defines” us for what they say is the rest of our lives. This is our school system, this is their influence, this our reality...let that sink in.

They aren't masochists, they don't enjoy torturing themselves. :P You might be thinking "I'm not a masochist", but the fact that you exposed yourself to so much self-torture means you must like it, or that the pain doesn't bother you as much as the success rewards you, in which case, you're clearly exaggerating your suffering... There are no other alternatives. xD EDIT: FYI, i never fell for the whole grade system and educational expectations... I tried, but it wasn't rewarding, so i stopped, immediately.. Since then i half-assed school with perfectly average grades, i prioritized comfort and mental health over grades. :P

@@MyouKyuubi And thats what i am realising now. For 6 straight years, i studied so hard a month before exams that i ended up weakening my physical health and diet patterns. I was metally unsatisfied with everything, no sort of curiousity. Felt like my parents enjoyed seeing me being a labour to grades. It was a brainwashing pill, forcefully dissolved deep in my unconscious by school and parents. And after i got the first position in class, it wasa feeling of emptiness. Studied almost 12 hours a day whole month, for being rewarded with a fake smile and appreciation. Didn't even get any money for buying books i was interested in. I have realised this now, and will no longer be a slave to false ambitions. Thank you all for awaring me!

Quarantine taught me that health is more important than education (namely mental health). Without it, we won't be able to score well. Conversely, with good health, studying becomes easy. Now that I think about it, we might be the first to gain the opportunity to think about life at an early age, without the constant distraction of schools. With that said, take quarantine as an opportunity. I rather spend time living the new life than try to revert and maintain the old.

Relatable. I remembered during premed days that despite my art appreciation class being scheduled on my most busiest day of the week I still took it and I was actually excited for that day. I was kinda sad that I wasn't as enthusiastic with my major subjects and I hated that since it wasn't my major's fault that I was feeling that way towards it, but still it is sad that learning is kinda about passing a subj. rather than actually learning it.

I'm Spanish myself and I can tell the education system here is trash too. I'm sixteen and we're still learning past simple and present continuous and pretty basic vocabulary. They start teaching us english when we're three and still most of people don't understand anything, only the ones that go to private classes and stuff. It wasn't until I was eleven that I began to understand better english because I got my first phone and I would look up the lyrics of the songs I liked , watch cartoons they got tired of translating here , playing video games that didn't have the "select Spanish" option , I mean , for once I understood that learning english was useful for me and I ended up teaching myself (I still have a lot more to learn obviously) I always pass with god grades my english tests because???? I choose the answers that just sound right??? But If i wasn't interested in any of the things that were worth learning for, i still wouldn't be able to tell the difference between "too" and "to"

@@taigaramsey8061 Yeah as someone with a similar perspective as the video maker, I could see myself being a teacher and actually caring about real learning and teaching, but then I see that the current education system doesn't really allow for real teaching/learning. I recommend the book "Dumbing us Down" by John Taylor Gatto. He won teacher of the year in the state of New York for 2 years and he talks about how our education system is kinda bullshit. He encouraged his students to work in their on projects outside of the normal curriculum, and he saw how kids already had their own gifts and genius characteristics that werent really being addressed and grown. We need an entirely different system of schooling. Although, I did have 1 or 2 really good teachers in elementary and highschool. Only 1 or 2 out of 30 lol.

I enjoyed reading as a young kid but when I got to high school I started to enjoy it less and less. It became negatively associated with schoolwork and also I would always choose to watch a show instead. Reading is actually a skill that I think I lost over time. Obviously I can read but reading a book and retaining the contents isn’t something I practiced for a long time outside of school. Reading a book puts me to sleep really quickly. Despite all of this I want to start reading more books that I choose instead of just college textbooks.

It could also be that I’m getting more into the book series I’m reading. I still take Melatonin because otherwise it would just take too long for me to fall asleep at night. before high school, i was so thrilled that physics finally made into the curriculum i had already studied part of the subject during vacation and i loved it... but then the teacher was a piece of garbage. He would always ignore me with a smile on his face, one time he asked something to the class I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT RAISED MY HAND he looked at me in the eyes and said something like: well if no one knows the answer lemme tell ya ARG I HATE HIM. It is the same case as mine. I easily feel extremely discouraged whenever I am really interested with the subject but the professor ignores or completely neglects it, rather, they pay more attention to other people that are already knowledgeable and good with the subject. We, who wanted to learn more tend to be ignored while those who already get it, tend to be noticed. It's just..... depressing

For those that get anxious every time he says “be responsible”. An idea that helps me is how “doing things that give you purpose counteracts things that take it away.” So, if you feel pressured by the idea of taking responsibility, know that doing these fulfilling things for yourself can help ease the suffering/stress from school or work.

Another reason why learning isn’t as fun is because we were taught from a young age that getting things wrong or getting the wrong answer is a bad thing and regresses your progress. Which is totally not true if you acknowledge and learn from mistakes. Perfection is just not a humane expectation and it deteriorates our other human qualities like passion and curiosity. I used to be passionate about technology and astrophysics, to the point I sneaked on my mom’s office and stayed up all night just trying to understand this little piece of info I was missing. It felt amazing when I finally figured it out and even more so when I reached that conclusion on my own. I NEVER did well at school, I didn’t care. Yet still I aced most tests and that was the only thing that stopped my teachers from kicking me out. I never understood why they made such a fuss out of a number that clearly didn’t reflected my performance, but yeah, “rules”. I wish I could say the same about nowadays, but I can’t even remember my own birthday, I’m really slow to understand everything, and my creativity is just dead. And my curiosity? It’s still there, but there’s not much of a drive to satisfy it and that has made me depressed. I seriously feel like I was much smarter when I was little than I am right now, and that really discourages me from learning more. I’m working hard to overcome it, but it still feels like I grow dumber by the day.

I ended up learning science and microbiology but in reality I was never into it with passion. I didn't pursue it further and then entered the education field. But again, it's not something I am passionate about. When you said to take the responsibility to learn, read and more, it made me think about the times I downloaded books on my phone but avoided reading them , thinking it was a "hassle". Even though, I downloaded them because I wanted to read them, I didn't open them and they are just there, taking up space in my phone. I have hard copies too but that feels bothersome too. Why are things bothersome to me? Why are they no longer interesting for me? I cannot tell. The shows I watched or the activities I did, none of them seem interesting to me anymore. I have decided to stop learning as well but doing a job also makes crazy with anxiety. None of this is anyone's fault. I shouldn't be dumping all this on a public forum but I cannot help it. I have two exams tomorrow and the day after but I couldn't bring myself to open my book and just read anything. Tomorrow, I will panic with the syllabus and maybe start studying in the evening, even though I should be doing in the morning. I dunno. Why am I like this? Why am I not worthy of my own respect and love. Why is it so much work to look after myself? I don't know. I didn't mean to whine. I'll probably even get comments saying to stop whining and I should stop whining but something about this video just made me feel so full of emotions that I couldn't control. Time will inevitably change you, and may very well take you to where you want to be at some point. It's annoyingly difficult to avoid clichés when I'm being honest, but to achieve anything in life you can only *try.* I believe that someone who cares as much as you do will take to that journey well, though you may not even realize it. Maybe the nature of progress is feeling unsatisfied to some degree. Maybe you're already halfway to where you want to be. Sorry for going on like this. Easy, you can mix many of those together. A writer can write about music, painting, games, and fitness. Body building and diet will be easier to manage, since one is a meal and the other is an activity. Meaning you aren't able to spend excessive time on exercise since you will fatigue eventually. Therefore leaving enough time for Developing, game playing, and music which you can adjust to your schedule. You don't always need to fit all of them in one day. To maintain interest you can work on one every other day

I will deliberately allocate those free time to do those things that offer the most delight. Intentionality is important; the default tendency is for us to fall for the easiest ways of entertainment that don't really relax nor content us. Maybe, instead of drowning in hours of KZbin binging, I could devote an hour to hone my skill of writing: as it both delights me and gives me a sense of calm. Or more passively, I could also choose to pick up a great classic along with a cup of hot beverage to waste the night away. See, it's about developing an acquired taste for subtle ways of relaxation. Most "immediate" means of relaxation don't actually relax us, it is only through clarifying: "What is my own unique taste?" can we really find something that both satisfy us and gives us contentment during our idle hours. @@anniem5473 I might have an idea. I'm really passionate about self learning and was, even before I even clicked on this video. When I did, I found myself agreeing with everything he's saying. I'm in my senior year of high school. In our modern age, we have all the resources we need. I think the key components are: *1* ) Videos, Google, and Wikipedia *-* On the surface, Google and Wiki don't seem very credible, but they're amazing tools. In order to pursue a topic you want to learn, you need to learn what questions to ask first. Videos can provide AT LEAST the very basics in an easy to understand form. From there, you can get an idea on what resources you need to continue learning. Also, using google, you can ask very specific questions in order to get an answer, one you know to ask them. *2* ) Dedicated websites *-* I'm very passionate about learning other languages, and I have a very effective system in place just by searching up "How to learn Japanese" on google. I found a dedicated website with amazing insight and suggested resources. I used this, and my other knowledge I gained from KZbin to find: 1: An app with around 6000 Japanese Kanji(pictographs), how to draw and pronounce them, their uses in vocabulary words, and more. 2: A place to learn grammar, and 3: An app called AnkiDroid which uses science (spaced repetition) to create my own decks to memorize every single one of those Kanji. (I'm learning 15 per day and will know ~5400 in a year.) *3* )Books *-* Books are a one-on-one teaching session of their own with insights from the author, personally. Invaluable. *4* )Community *-* Communities of like minded people drive us and answer our questions from simple interaction. I've found many dedicated KZbin channels of polyglots (people who have learned multiple languages) and I have learned so much about how to learn them, and they're super entertaining. (look up Laoshu5500, or Ikkenna) There is a community for everything, and you don't even have to interact with it in order to learn. Simply observing what people are saying will push you forward.

When I study on a certain topic, i just try gathering knowledge from many sources although i know i should stick to just one. You end up getting confused and a bit demotivated when learning from different sources at once. And when i stick to one source, it gets a bit boring. So, maybe to end that, choose the best source you can find after researching a lot and then, stick to it. I will try this method out and see, how it goes.

@@anniem5473 a college library is a fantastic place to find new things you’re interested in. I used to go to the one near me all the time as a teenager. You browse the shelves until you see a (nonfiction) book that seems kind of interesting. You flip through it and if it still seems interesting, put it in your growing stack of books. Keep going until you have a stack of like 10 books. Take these over to a reading area and just sit down and read. Check the table of contents for the most interesting sections, and go more in depth on stuff that really interests you. Keep a written list of books you want to come back to, or of subjects you want to know more about. Bring that list with you every time you go to the library. And don’t feel obligated to read anything that bores you!

I'm glad that all this years of school have not been wasted. I have KZbin and I've learned a lot more useful things for my life than what I've learned at school. OMG I needed this so. Bad. I’m a junior in high school and school plus the pandemic is just chipping away at my spirit and I felt to relieved to hear someone who recognizes what’s happening in our education. And not just when students are like “ugh we don’t even use algebra, why don’t we learn how to do taxes,” I think you went in on such a deeper level. My parents have actually commented that I used to love school and now I’m dragging my feet and fall into a depression sometimes because I feel such a lack of purpose that would normally be filled by truly learning something. I miss that feeling. I don’t even care about being a genius, I just don’t want to be incapable of original thoughts; I’m not saying I want to burn with passion for something, but I want to look at the thing I’m doing and like it. This is so true, especially in 2020... without any ability to really talk with other people about my interests and learn in some of the non-traditional routes that my college offers, I’ve really lost most of my passion for my major in Economics. I feel like my brain is too tired by the endless striving and so I can’t bring myself to pick up a book on the shelf and really learn something just because I’m interested in. I look at freshman and I’m like omg they’re so eager 😂😂 sad because I miss that eagerness for learning and my natural curiosity. Learning how to learn comes with experience. Studying is a skill that needs to be cultivated over time; things like grappling with confusion, knowing what to put into your commonplace book and what not to, developing a conceptual map, knowing how to read a book etc etc. Of course it'd help if you first of all "learn how to learn", but trial and errors also work if you want to figure it out by yourself.

It's upsetting to see my peers do homework like a chore just to get the grade rather than knowing the deeper meaning/theory behind it. Of course this is hard to do when you're not interested in the subject in the first place. I always feel accomplished when I study by myself, but at school I feel very stupid as you're told to say things in a certain way, which is mostly memorising.

I am at least 20 years your senior, and I must say you are truly an inspiration. At 40 years old I scored very high percentages on being an introverted intuitive, two more terms I was unaware of, and I have been studying ever since. School for me was horrible. Apart from the stress of needing to score well, the joy and the enthusiasm I had got sucked out. The only moment of happiness I got was alone in the Physics lab with tools or the library surrounded by books. Some moments I felt happy and grateful to have gotten the chance to get an "education" (which is now more of a word than something related to learning OR development). Every time I watched or learnt about pioneers in different feels I was filled with this energy of wanting to do something big. But you have your teachers who say you won't be able to study if you do that, what about your grades? You won't be successful,etc. I want to create. I want to do something big. Each day I struggle to bring back that joy, but I think now I know where to begin.

I always hear young students complain about "letters being introduced in maths" but what you don't often consider is that letters intoduced in algebra are placeholders for numbers, and the more you use them the more they make sense and you realise how powerful a concept they are. 'n' is a natural number. any. all of them basically. you can now express relationship between whole categories of numbers, instead of values. That's maths evolved, a new understanding of it. hope this helps you appreciate it more, since you have to go through it anyway lol, you might as well enjoy it
