1:01 - Kryten's little nod when Rimmer tells the rest of the crew what they must think of him is perfect, so subtle, subdued, and out of the way..... and yet so comedic.
@georgeowain6 жыл бұрын
Your comment about this episode being Fan Service is correct. The writers got so many requests to bring back Dwayne, Ace and the Polymorph, that in the end they just wrote one episode featuring all three.

in the Red Dwarf novel The Last Human; which adapted this episode in to its plot. Lister and his Gelf bride did in fact consummate their marriage after Lister had been handed an alcoholic beverage that completely intoxicated him. When he suddenly sobered up, he slowly realised that what he thought was Kochanski (who was part of the crew in the novel) riding him, was actually the Gelf he had married. The chapter then ended with him fleeing naked while screaming "Change of plan leg it!".

This was my first Series VI episode, and my god was it good. It is fan service, it's a follow up to a classic episode that brings back to favourite characters from two other classic episodes, but it's fan service in a good way. Just hearing Arnold-as-Ace saying "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast" got me clapping when I saw it. And apparently, despite being one of two seasons not to feature the Red Dwarf, the rest of Series VI is meant to be fantastic too. EDIT: Also, that scene where the Polymorph ditches its stick form got me screaming, and I don't know why.

Rimmer isn't really Ace here, he's more Rimmer's idea of Ace. At least in my head he is. That adds a nice bit of texture to Rimmer's hatred of Ace. In his mind Ace would casually sacrifice them all for the greater good.
@optimisticwhovian17266 жыл бұрын
Rimmer should've turned back into the Quiche guy surely, turning into Ace was a positive not a negative so this makes no sense really and is just blatant fan service as was Cat becoming Dwayne Dibley and not just the homeless guy, how would the polymorph know about the suicide squid event?

I love that all it did as remove his bitterness yet he is still just as incompetent because it didn't give him any of Ace's skill or intelligence.

You asked in a previous video why people like Dwayne Dibbly. I think it's because the Cat represents the kind of person we all wish we were. Cool, confident, without a care in the world. Dwayne Dibbly represents who we really are on some level. Nerdy about something, unfashionable in a lot of ways, socially awkward with parts of our body we don't like, and that personality contrasts with the Cat so much. Take anybody, peel away the layers and eventually you will get to a form of a Dwayne Dibbly which makes him relate-able in a lot of ways. That's my theory at least.

3:43 "totally kaputski" is probably one of my favorite lines in this episode and I can't even really tell why (it might be because of my brain being kinda confused by the fact that "kaputski" is quite similar to the German word for broken, which is kaputt, and kaputski sounds like something German parents would say to their toddler or a baby pet after it broke something that wasn't really valuable in the first place.) XD

ski is a common ending when describing the Russian language - Like Chelski instead of Chelsea football club.
@onlineamiga7 жыл бұрын
Thats interesting because in England we do sometimes use the word Kaputt as well. to say something is broken. Its kinda seen as a slang word but i didn't know it was borrowed from German.
@jankreft67537 жыл бұрын
onlineamiga the English language borrows much from German, but I always thought it's just American English due to the big amount of German immigrants in the US (many Arnish people still speak a really weird version of low German) 🤔 (some examples for German expressions in English are Zeitgeist, über, Angst, Poltergeist or schadenfreude … BTW there's a whole page on Wikipedia about it)

I know this was a while ago but I just found this review series. I am loving it but just heard you say that you didn't know why the military had short hair. Most of the time it is for uniformity. Everyone is supposed to look like everyone else so the enemy doesn't know who is important and who isn't at a glance. Thank you.

Rimmer turning into Ace probably accidentally works into the fact that Ace was revealed to be a passed on title between Rimmers - meaning that Ace isn't a specific version, more Rimmer if he embodied the same traits.

Audiences going hysterical every time one actor or another enters a scene in a sitcom is definitely an American thing, and indeed audiences going hysterical in general is an American thing, happens in chat shows as well and is quite annoying when you have to sit there waiting for everyone to shut up so they can get on with the show.
@BintyMcFrazzles2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it's starting to happen on some chat shows in the UK, such as The Graham Norton Show. Every time an actor is on who is relatively famous, the screaming and whooping hysterically at every other word is actually annoying

I did like this one, but it was too fan-based. We didn't know of such characters as Duane Dibbley and Ace Rimmer in the original Polymorph episode, but you could almost guess, even if you are seeing it for the first time, that these two would come back with their respective alter egos. It was a lot of fun to watch, but a little too fan-based. Marginal recommendation.
