That's a possibility. Personally I always thought that the polymorph achieved that by turning its proboscis into light.

There was a comic strip in the Red Dwarf Smegazine set during season 6 that had the 2nd Polymorph disguise itself as Red Dwarf and its crew (prefiguring Season 8 by 6 years!) Unfortunately it did it too well and the duplicate Rimmer ended up not sealing the drive plate properly and it blew up because comics

I grew up watching Red Dwarf here in the UK, it was a viewing staple with my dad and younger brother (I cried at the season 6 finale because I thought it was OVER!) My partner had only ever seen clips so we decided to binge it up to where the original run ended because that's where I dropped off. I came across your video series while researching Back to Earth onwards out of interest and I'm fascinated with what you have drawn from it and some of the points you've made! I always thought Back to earth seemed a bit poo so I sucked it up and put it on... We're now up to series 12 and I have a warm fuzzy feeling of seeing Red Dwarf episodes I've never seen before, I feel like a kid again watching it. I can't wait to get to your episodes where you dissect those ones seeing as it's all so fresh!

Fun fact. The scene where the Polymorph changed into Lister's boxers and starts shrinking which made Kryten's to remove them from Lister made the entire audience laugh so much that the creators couldn't hear what they're saying.

I've seen things that I didn't believe, like little details missed by the wash of laughter, like Kryten petting cat, like hearing Lister saying twat and hearing swat" all those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in...rain. Time to laugh.

I think “Red Dwarf” references the “Alien” films so much because out of all popular space-related film & television at the time “Red Dwarf” aired, “Alien” is the one the show resembles most. Look at the utilitarian ship design, the lived-in appearance, the protagonists being ordinary working stiffs rather than soldiers/scientists/criminals, the rarity of contact with alien civilizations, and the depiction of space travel as commonplace but still limited in scope and requiring stasis for long trips. All of these are features “Red Dwarf” shares in common with “Alien” much more than shows and films like “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Dr. Who,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Blake’s Seven.” Of course, “Red Dwarf” has referenced some of these others, but, as you point out, it references “Alien” a lot more.

A lack of fear will probably free you to do many things. With no fear of repercussions, including death, a noble man will do crazy things. Theres plenty of noble and fearless characters in fantasy and other writing, IE the valiant knight. Its likely Lister was meant to be emulating them.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. It is somewhat ironic, because when I first saw Red Dwarf on YTV in the late 1980's, there were some of the obscenities and sex-related scenes cut. This entire episode was cut from the YTV version of it. But with it on the DVD made it worth waiting for. One note: Shortly before Rimmer and Kryten leave with the Cat, Rimmer says "Let's get Lister and get out of here." He should have said "Cat" instead of "Lister". Another note: Just as the three, Kryten, Cat, and Rimmer are coming down the lift, they are standing in different positions then they are when the camera cuts to the side of them.

The other reason for the warning at the beginning, was the use of the words "twat". Well, it was the 80s. 😁 The word is extremely versatile. And it wasn't a "sausage" on Lister's plate, it was a kebab. 😆😆 The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society is the greatest abbreviation, ever in comedy. I love this show.

This was one of my favorite episodes but the part that makes me laugh most is a part i don't think anyone else picked up on, when the Polymorph is seducing Cat and he goes on that monologue of how you have to keep your guard up at all times, then says 'come on babe' to it you can just for a second see the Polymorph roll its eyes, for some reason that makes me die laughing its like its going "Come on man at least make this A BIT challenging!" when they did the episodes for digital format they made a number of changes to certain episodes, improved special effects but also alterting some episode stories. in polymorth they didn't show the second lister sequence but said the second polymorth was so dumb it hid in listers clean sock drawer and starved to death.

You're right about lister sans anger, but I think this episode gets away with it where parallel universe didn't because this is piss your pants funny whereas parallel universe had very little in it that would actually get a laugh. Plus this episode makes it clear that the characters weren't themselves while parallel universe expected us to believe that that bunch of a-holes were the same characters as the ones we know except gender swapped.

Glad I bought the unaltered originals on DVD before all the remastering crap started, Doug turned into another George Lucas, once you've finished a product just leave it alone. Interesting to note Cat doesn't turn into Dwayne Dibley here either nor does Rimmer turn into Ace which is what the second polymorph converts them too once those characters debuted and became popular, bit inconsistent with the continuity of what these creatures do to them though, I would've liked to see Quiche guy back he was funny.

That’s because the second polymorph sucked out rimmer’s bitterness and cat’s coolness. The first polymorph sucked out their actual emotions.
