The 'Holly not recognizing Kryten' thing is, imo, a reference to Kryten being played by a different actor when Norman Lovett's version of Holly met him. I know that female Holly is supposed to be the same character with a head swap, but it's a neat little acknowledgement to the past while not totally breaking the 4th wall.

I'm not sure about one arm but people who lose other limbs have been amazing, take for example Sir Douglas Bader an RAF pilot who lost both his legs in a flying accident but when WWII broke out he learned how to fly a fighter plane with metal legs rejoined the RAF and managed to shoot down 22 German aircraft before being shot down and captured he even managed to escape his POW camp twice and because of this he had to be put in colditz and threatened with having his artificial legs confiscated, after the war he help a great many people who were disabled learn to adapt and earned a knighthood for it, the word amazing was invented to describe people like him.

Götz von Berlichingen AKA Götz of the Iron Hand was a German Mercenary he lost his right arm at the elbow when enemy cannon fire forced his sword against him. He had two mechanical prosthetic iron replacements made. The second, more famous prosthetic hand was capable of holding objects from a shield or reins to a quill. Both are today on display at the Burg Jagsthausen. In spite of this injury, Berlichingen continued his military activities. In the subsequent years he was involved in numerous feuds, both of his own and in support of friends and employers.

I admit, like many, I did not like season 8. However, it is actually for that reason I cannot wait to hear your more nuanced take on it; particularly after you gave me a much greater appreciation for season 7, despite its faults. :)

This episode is really nice, I do like that it's written to bring some sincerity to Lister's predicament, but it has some fun twists including the nanobots and Red Dwarf's real fate, though they risked that plot being crammed into this alongside Lister's trouble, but I think they weaved things together well enough that it worked out nicely without feeling stuffed and unbalanced, and of course the show's goofy nature help's for not requiring the audience to think too hard over things or take such coincidence too seriously.

I just watched Bladerunner 2049 and realized a lot of things from Red Dwarf. Since the show was inspired by the first movie, I wonder if some things from Red Dwarf got put in the sequel?

I am loving your RD vlogs. I watch them at every meal. Just ordered the new series on DVD. But i remember the part in this episode were Lister is reveled with muscles because it hurt my feelings when everyone acted as if it was strange or gross. I was actually bigger than the model they used for Lister at one point when I was bodybuilding. Seems the only body type people can make fun of without being called out for body shaming. Lol. Still a great episode,but that part always made me huffy,lol. Anyway, keep up the vids!!

I don't think it was the body type they were laughing at, it was the fact it was Lister. any body type that wasn't his would be funny; fat, skinny, white, female, that's the joke.

I remember when I first saw this episode I went back to check the episodes in question and, yeah, the Despair Squid was the last time we saw Red Dwarf until now. Was a nice nod to continuity there. Unfortunately, the gag the end of this episode sets up to start off Season 8 is only the first in a long list of disappointments I have for Season 8. As for how Season 8 ended, well, I'll say my piece when we get there.

I discovered these vlogs a few months ago and think they're brilliant, especially looking forward to a can't smeg won't smeg review, although I didn't peticularly enjoy that special. As for my opinions on the other RD series I think that 3 was the best. Not really a fan of series 6 to 8 but there are a few exceptions and I love series 10 onwards. Anyway enough about me, I have a question for you - how long are you gunna keep these vlogs going, are you going all the way up to series 12?

I have a theory that when kryten is helping lister do everything from playing guitar to dunking biscuits in his tea I think you're right that lister could actually do most of it himself (albeit with difficulty given his only hand is his non dominant hand) but I think he's just acting like that albeit subconsciously to guilt shame kryten.

@@Cyborcat have just done some red dwarf art from series 7 with lister and co on starbug, sending an sos to find red dwarf. It originally featured kris and no Arnold, however Rimmer took her place after careful deliberation. There’s a shot of red dwarf at the bottom with a sketch of a corridor featuring Holly, scutters near a vending machine, and the original Kristine as a hologram. Way I see it, Holly could still generate a temporary hologram with Rimmer so out of range. He didn’t generate her after the accident, Holly thinks it wouldn’t have worked out with Dave

Recently rewatching VII, I'll admit a lot of it has aged better than on first viewing. The blu-ray removes that fake film effect too. "Beyond a Joke" is my favorite though "Blue" comes close.

I had about the same feeling as you did about Nanarchy. However, the only real problem I had with it was that I hate it when people call biscuits "bik-biks". I also found it quite annoying that Kryten was treating Lister like a baby and almost spoon-feeding him. Kochanski was right about him giving Lister some space. Since that was only the weakest part for me, the rest of Nanarchy was really good. I really liked the idea of the Nanobots and how Kryten was talking to them. They were better than the Epideme virus, and the whole episode was better than Epideme.

I'm surprised you didn't mention this is the season where Rob Grant left which is why a lot characters changed and the story took a hard right in continuity. It's also why so much of the show was hit and miss and why the next season was so much miss for older fans.

Season 8 really grew on me over the years. I love the added dynamic of Kochanski for the most part, and Rimmer and Lister being more chummy. Plus I really hate season 9 so anything looks good compared to that for me.

I have no idea why I love Nanarchy so much... maybe because it's the last gasp of 'oldschool' Dwarf before we get into what I think of as the modern era? And as we all know, everything was better back then.

I think the biggest problem with S7 was its best episodes were the first two. Tikka to ride and stoke me a clipper were classics and the rest couldn’t quite measure up.

Cyborcat Meh, your show, your opinions. I can watch it, it's just that some of the jokes fall flat to me. KK is not at her best here, I like her more in S8. The 'Surprise skill' moment worked for me though, mostly because of how it was done and who with. Either way, I still look forward to hearing what you have to say. 😊

actually series 7 was better than 8 in my book, once the crew were back aboard a crewed red dwarf it got a lot stupider and less interesting. I don't understand people bitching about 7, rimmer was still in most of it anyway and kochanski wasn't that bad

I think series VIII has a lot of good scenes in some truly terrible episodes. I think Cassandra ends up being the best episode for its simplicity and one-liners, but... yeah, Back in the Red, Krytie TV, Only the Good... and most of all Pete suffer quite a lot. All of them aren't so great, but have some hilarious singular moments or scenes.
