Marty Hurley used a similar concept back in the late 70's and I think again in the early 90's with the Phantom drumline. Albeit slightly less extreme. They were some nice sounding drums, very crisp, cut through the horns nicely.

I liked how the original snare sound had at first. Nice and warm. With the holes, it had a nice bite and crack as well. After you cut out the holes, it does look cool, but it seemed too fragile. Nice video as always.

Make a snare shell with mini trap doors. that way you can switch back and forth from a standard sound to a skeleton sound easily.

dw did something dumb and similar, check out the eq series snare! it has cuts in it that you can open with a general switch, but nobody bought it as everyone figured out it sounded like shit

Odery did it before DW did. John Blackwell's Tama snare also had something similar, with multiple vent holes plugged with corks that you could remove and change the sound.

@rdavidr , can you layer two shells together to create a DOUBLE SHELL DRUM? ie a 12 inch shell with a 14 inch shell with one drum head over the two

I would like to see a thin to medium wrap around the shell to possibly hear a nice tone. Using the wrap to plug the holes without completely filling them in (theoretically) might give the snare a solid tone. I'm probably wrong, but would like to see it!

Now take that snare and fill in the holes with different materials to see how the sound changes. Things to try: Aluminum Foil. Plastic Wrap. Wrapping Paper. Printer Paper. Glass. Drum Head Squares cut to fit. .. My bet is aluminum foil would have a nice sound as well as the glass.
