The lead singer and main creative force behind Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, is a huge music fan and record collector and his tastes are very wide. One of my favorite things about his music is how good he is at blending genres into something new, cohesive, and extremely listenable even when it's complex. Some of his main influences are classic prog and art rock (Genesis, Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, etc) to Abba, The Carpenters, Donna Summer, to experimental ambient music, drone, industrial, electronic, dream pop, shoegaze, and art-pop like XTC and Tears For Fears. Even though his music is primarily modern prog with some forays into rock, pop, and electronic, he always manages to blend in all these other influences and flavors. That's all a long way of saying that you're both right! Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson is a great rabbit hole to go down. So much amazing music. He's a great composer and producer and he always has incredible musicians playing with him. As someone mentioned previously, the drummer Gavin Harrison (PT's drummer on their last few records) is out of this world good. PT's new track Harridan is a drumming master class.

A few suggestions to help you along.with Porcupine tree who have a host of amazing songs. Fear of a blank planet’,‘Trains’, ‘Anaesthetise’, ‘The start of something beautiful’, ‘Time flies’,’Lazarus’, ‘heart attack in a lay-by’,’ Hatesong’, and ‘Don’t Hate me’, ‘Russia on Ice’ ‘Yellow Hedgerow dreamscape’,’Cheating the polygraph’, and many more really cannot recommend their work highly enough. Oh and the most recent track (this year) ‘Harridan’. Steven Wilson has also had a brilliant solo career from 2010 to date with 6 Albums of excellence. There are no bad tracks but personal favourites include, ‘Deform to form a star’, ’Luminol’, kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYrJgmR_YruJba8. (real yes influence here). ‘The raven that refused to sing’, “Watchmaker’, ‘Home invasion/Regret no 9’,’Routine (use the video animation)’,’Pariah’, ‘Refuge’, ‘Detonation’ and ‘Ancestral’ and the very sad ‘Happy returns/Ascendant here on’.

An excellent band to react to react to, thank you! This is one of my favourite all-time tracks and is old enough to be from a time when songs were still allowed to fade out! They have many brilliant tracks, but they were more trippy than was the case in this song earlier in their existence, so I would recommend one of their earlier songs next, such as Always Never or the epic The Sky Moves Sideways (Part 1). Others will no doubt tell you more about founder and main man Steven Wilson so, given Rach harked back to the 1980s with regard to some of the vibes she got from the song, I thought I'd mention that the Porcupine Tree keyboard player, Richard Barbieri, was a member of the UK New Wave band Japan which released 5 albums between 1978 and 1981, 3 of which went Gold. It's been over 12 years since the last Porcupine Tree album and Steven Wilson has been saying for some time that the band was completely finished in favour of his solo career, but it was unexpectedly announced towards the end of last year that a new Tree album will be released this year, with recording having already been completed last year.

Nice review guys. Glad you enjoyed it and are tempted to try more PT (either for reaction videos or for your own listening). Some good recommendations suggested already, but in my view their best album is In Absentia. It gives you an idea of the range of styles they can play, from very heavy and dark (e.g. Strip The Soul) to delicate and sombre (Heart Attack in a Lay-By). Pretty much every track on that album is worth a listen, as is most of Steven Wilson's work to be honest. Hand Cannot Erase is a modern(ish) masterpiece. Have fun!

As a long time Porcupine Tree fan, I highly recommend checking out their stuff from just before this album. The albums that followed this one while are fantastic, they are not Progressive. To sum up their discography in era's I would describe it as follows Pre 1999 - Progressive and experimental 1999 to 2005 - The Golden Era 2005 and on - When Steven Wilson was becoming a bit too pretentious. This also marked a huge decrease in creativity imo. The Golden Era is where I would start. But for the love of God, "Anesthetize" is not a good choice for your second spin if this one didn't float your boat (and I am almost certain it's what people are going to request the most). I'd say from your critique, these 2 songs will be more in tune for you - "Stars Die" (The Delirium Years) or "Don't Hate Me" (Stupid Dream).

To me this is a good example of Steven Wilson milking a fairly simple song idea and turning it into something much larger. It works a bit better live. The indie rock comparison is spot on, but what makes SW interesting is how he mashes those influences together with the Floydian psych stuff and the metal stuff. My suggestion would be to go back to Signify, which is where PT albums got more song-based and had that Radiohead/indie rock thing taking hold. Great songwriting on that one.
