Necrotic Nick- Not a problem, man. I’ve been watching your channel for awhile and always enjoyed your insights. This subject in particular just resonated with me. Those years picking up music as a teenager had probably the biggest impact on me as a fan and going back was a lot of fun. Thanks again, man. The other Thralls are making lists themselves too. 🤘

Metaldisc catalogs was a huge opening for me back in the early 90s,helped me find therions first album of darkness and Blood from the soul crossover hardcore/industrial with lou koller of sick of it all and shane embury of Napalm death.Got introduced too many other death metal, punk, industrial bands threw Metaldisc catalogue back then.

Covenant was my first Morbid angel album. It might still be my #1 if not Gateways.........reign in blood is a staple for me too. That Strife album I also loved a lot......I also liked Snapcase and all that 90's Victory shit. Such good years. I listened to that strife album and Warzone while recovering from a snowboarding accident/facial reconstructive surgery. Good taste my friend......

Cool set of records... Here are my most influential metal albums from my teens in somewhat of a chronological order: 1) Iron Maiden - Live After Death: After watching Wasted Years' clip on TV back in '87 I was completely sold on Maiden from the get go. Live After Death was the first recording I had and what to say about that record other than it's almost perfect and blew my mind. A few weeks later I already had Wasted Years' maxi single and my parents gave me Killers on Vinyl on my birthday. Die Hard fan since then. 2) Judas Priest - Live: Although featuring a lot of Turbo turds, this was the best way to get into 80's Priest tunes back in 87. Briefly after this I had British Steel and Defenders Of The Faith recorded and once again how can a pre teen not be impressed by it? 3) Anthrax - Among The Living: Fast, fierce yet groovy and uplifting at times. Can't go wrong with Anthrax and back in '88 this was the perfect bridge to heavier stuff. 4) Metallica - Master Of Puppets: What teenager listens to Master and doesn't immediately fall in love with it? Powerful yet intricate I also listened to it first back in '88 and if I'm not mistaken few months after Justice came out and if Master blew my mind, it's follower had an even deeper impact on me and to this day remains as my favorite album by the band. Nonetheless it was master that started it all. 5) Black Sabbath - Vol 4: My first contact with old Sabbath was Ozzy's Speak Of The Devil back in 88 but the first true Sabbath record I listened to was Vol 4 only one year later (it belonged to a friend of mine's record collection). I had a rough time going through the early 70's production but man... I truly remember hou songs like St. Vitus Dance or Supernaut clang to my brain. So sson I had the remainder of their discography and been a fan ever since. 6) Helloween - Live In The Uk: This one I listened almost when it came. Bear in mind by then the term Power Metal wasn't even defined so many called this Heavy/ Speed Metal. And indeed this thing was fast yet uplifting. Plus I was immediately caught by Kiske's amazing voice and amazing charisma. Fact is I liked all of their catalogue until Chameleon came out (Yes I liked Pink Bubbles back then and still like it now)and then I called it quits since the album was really bad and then Kiske left the band. But I return to give some spins first 4 albums (plus the EPs are) to this day and still have a ball while doing so. 6) Megadeth - So Far So Good... So What!: This damned thing melt my face. I believe it was 1989 and I simply was in awe before the complex yet corrosive as hell sound of these dudes. Plus Mustaine's voice and that cover... man it felt like the perfect soundtrack to the apocalypse. Nowadays it's still my #2 record by the band and it's not #1 because more or less a year later these dudes would simply blow my mind. 7/8 ) Slayer - South Of Heaven/ Reign In Blood: My first contact with the band was in '89 with South Of Heaven and while it sounded heavy and dark it was within my scope and pretty much liked it. Then the same friend that recorded me the album gave me a copy of Reign In Blood some weeks after and man... I really didn't know how to process the brutal onslaught that thing presented to me but it grew with every listening. And fact is till today after listening to tons of extreme bands I still think this thing is on the same level of brutality of stuff considered way heavier by many. This was the album that made me appreciate extreme metal. 9) Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus: My first contact with Doom Metal. The dire melody and slow heavy riffs really caught me. Plus I really loved Lanqvist voice... so unique. That is a reason why I never liked the following albums with Messiah. Nevertheless Epicus is a monument to this very day. 10) Sabbat - History Of A Time To Come: Now this absolutely left me in awe. These guys had blatant thrash elements yet a sense of epicness that none of other Thrash Metal bands could even aspire to. Plus the Pagan motives, Walkyer's voice, just so unique. To this day I'm a die hard Sabbat fanatic and put their first two records alongside any other thrash record (if not higher). 11) Death - Leprosy: My first contact with Death metal in 1990, I believe. This sounded to me like the natural progression of thrash yet heavier and darker. And full of gory lyrics. And although the band would later evolve into something bigger, Leprosy is still my favorite pure Death metal record by the boys. 12) Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos: In late 1990 colegue once showed up with this master piece's picture disc at school and just by looking at the cover I immediately ask him to make a copy to me. Got blown away by the intensity, heaviness and steamroller effect of the whole thing. To this day my favorite record from these guys and one of Death Metal's best albums in my book. 13) Terrorizer - World Downfall: Now, since I liked Realm Of Chaos so much the very same colegue recorded me this beast some days after. It was one of my first contacts with the genre and this is arguably Grindcore's bible. Groove, intensity, chaos and lots of adrenaline. 14) Sepultura - Arise: I already have heard some things from Beneath The Remains in 1990 and while liking it I kinda felt it was some cross between Slayer and Kreator with a rougher vocalization. Liked it but didn't loves it. Now when I first listened to Arise it was love at first sight. Way more intricate it was still brutal but had this unique atmosphere. To this day this is my favorite Sepultura album alongside Chaos AD. 15) Entombed - Clandestine: My first contact with this legendary band. A neighbor who was also into metal bought this record when it came out and I was in awe just by looking to that cover (with the embossed logo). When I played it just knocked me on my feet: the somber ambiance, the crushing guitar sound, the samples. So much I still hold Clandestine in much more regard than the band's debut. 16) Carcass - Necroticism (Descanting The Insalubrious): the same colegue that recorded me Bolt Thrower and recorded me Terrorizer bought Necroticism the day it came out and the day after brought me a recorded cassete with it and told me "Man just listen to this! You'll shit your pants". And later that day I would marvel into another of my all time favorite Death Metal records to this very date (and my personal favorite by the band). And I think I don't need to explain why. 17) Fear Factory - Soul Of A New Machine: Now I already was into industrial for some time by now (discovered the genre with The Young Gods when TV showed some snippets of a show they gave at Lisbon and was totally blown away... to this day one of my favorite bands) and even industrial metal while listening to Godflesh's debut that, at the time sounded really boring (it later became one of my favorite bands in the genre). But I became a fan of the perfect mix of Napalm Death's adrenaline, angelical refrains and sample filled ambiances almost immediately. 18) Paradise Lost - Shades Of God: the first contact I had with Shades Of God was its cover in a music magazine and completely feel in love with it (BTW Dave McKean became my favorite illustrator/ artist ever since and a huge influence in my work as a designer). Then a friend of mine used to record Headbangers Ball and lend me the recorded tapes (since I hqad no cable or dish9. One of them featured the Pity The Sadness clip. With such a wonder of a cover and a beast of tune I was more than convinced and bought the album. Funny fact this was the very first CD I bought (still have it) and Paradise Lost are the band I have more records in my collection (almost the entire discography, singles included). 19) Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses: Once again I was already into goth rock when this monster of an album came out (The Cult was one of the first bands I became a fan of back in the Maiden/ Priest days and ever since I discovered The Sisters Of Mercy and The Mission). But this was the perfect blend between Doom and Goth wit psychedelic undertones and a couple of hardcore here and there. Pete's voice was something else and the whole thing sounded absolutely majestic. My first contact with these guys was also from a metal show on the radio. 20) Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror: Midnight Mountain was another one I caught on the radio and although I already listened to some retro/ doom/ stoner (whatever one wants to call it) bands like St. Vitus fact is they didn't excite me but Cathedral was entirely different chemistry. Back in the day this was what old Sabbath a bit modernized and more doomy sounded to me and I loved it.

Old video, but I just came across it. Definitely brought back some cool feelings. Some of these are pretty special to me as well. A few, like the Prong, came out right around the time I was getting into metal stuff -- I liked it for a little while but never got the album, and then for a while there I was convinced that Prong was "crappy nu metal" and spurned them, but now I appreciate them again, and yes, Cleansing is a damn cool album. I also remember seeing Neurosis at Ozfest. Heavy as hell, indeed. Sounds of the Animal Kingdom was probably the first grindcore album I liked.

1. Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), it is the first Pantera album I bought with my money and heard from a friend of mine. Was blown away by it. 2. King Diamond - The Graveyard (1996), I know it’s funny, but after The Eye I thought King Diamond was over because it was my cousins that had Mercyful Fate and KD albums. Low and behold same friend of mine Jacob said no way check it out, we were freshmen and there it was King Diamond The Graveyard and got back into KD again thanks to him. 3. Deicide - Legion (1992), honestly I was 12, not too far from my 13th birthday, when my cousin’s BF played this. I was like holy shit! Totally fell in love with this and he also had the S/t and played that one too. Been a fan ever since. 4. Sepultura - Arise (1991), heard of the band, and found Arise on cassette. This was even during the time I believe Roots was already out and shit, but I bought this and loved it. I think the next Sepultura album I got was Roots eventually. 5. Megadeth - Youthanasia (1994), another one I bought with my own dineros, for the time I jammed this quite a bit and it got me thru some shit. Again I heard all the other MD albums before this due to friends or cousins, but this one spoke to me for some reason. A Tout Le Monde was my French Lesson 😂 6. Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon (1993) Holy Fuck is all I can say, so raw and evil and hadn’t heard anything like this since Sodom’s Obssessed by Cruelty. A friend of mine back home in Astoria, Oregon, known for The Goonies and some movies, but also has a huge Scandinavian heritage…. Anyways the buddy of mine had cousins in Norway that would send home some Black Metal albums and this was one he said Bro, check this and tell me what you think? It opened new doors for me and my love and passion for Black Metal began. 7. Testament - The Legacy (1987), my buddy Jacob’s uncle had this on vinyl, but he really didn’t want to play his vinyl much. So the funny thing a few months later I found it on vinyl in a video store that was also selling used music. I said right the fuck on and bought it for $5 got home popped it on, and the opening riff of Over the Wall sucked me in. For the time I thought that it was better than Metallica, but MoP beats that by a c*nt hair IMO and jammed this more. 8. Kick Axe - Vices (1984), I think the cover art drew me, interesting and stuff. I thought what the hell. Again I found this as the video store. It’s a fun album to me for an 80’s metal album and I have the cd and vinyl today. There are some good sing along tracks. 9. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated (1994), this album kicks so much ass and remember seeing Hammer Smashed Face on Ace Ventura. Was instantly hooked. I even played it last night on the Tube and my 2 year old lost his mind, all over the place dancing and grunting 😂 10. Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance (1996), I liked the sludge of this album, and at the time, it was inspiring to me before I dig into their first couple albums and realized they were a crossover band. This band kicks ass IMO 11. Morbid Angel - Covenant (1993), I heard Morbid Angel before, and I remembered I liked them, but it was watching Beavis and Butthead that I saw the video for God of Emptiness, and believe that was the actual first MA vid I saw on MTV. Instantly fell in love with this band and Pete’s chops are insane. 12. Korn - Life is Peachy (1996), it was around this time 15 or 16, I started seeing the craze for this band and didn’t really get the whole Addidas craze. Even my thrasher friend Gabe went into this mode and he intro’d me to this album. For the time I thought it was cool, before I really even knew what Nu Metal was about. I think it was after Issues, I fell off the bandwagon, then I had a roommate that was heavily into Korn, but yeah I was already done with them by then 😑 13. Nevermore - S/t (1995), I was entranced by Warrel Dane’s voice for this time. He had that 80’s voice I hadn’t heard in a long time. And this was even before I knew he was in Sanctuary. I used to sing like him with the high voices, not so much anymore 😂 loved everything about this album. 14. Voivod - Nothingface (1989), I needed to find new music, so of course I signed up under a pseudonym for Columbia records. I saw this Voivod album Negatron and thought what the hell? I thought it was ok, not even knowing Voivods past… then I found Nothingface used in a video store for sell, $3 😂 I miss those days, but I like the opening track The Unknown Knows, and it just went on. Astronomy Domine is an ok cover, but IMO this album is no slouch and I really like it. 15. Incantation - Mortal Throne of the Nazarene (1994), Unholy fuckin Satan!!!! Another one of my cousins BF introduced me to this brutal stuff. Entranced by the atmosphere and the disgusting vocals. One of my all time favorite death metal albums and bands. Met John McEntee at a show in San Diego a couple years ago as well and he is really cool. 16. Immortal - Battles in the North (1995), another BM band I got into courtesy of my buddy’s cousin sending shit over to him from Norway. I couldn’t believe how fast the blast beats were on this album, I thought it was a machine. Who knows? 17. Dream Theater - Images and Words (1992), my buddy Jacob and his uncle got me into this band around 93 or 94 just before Awake came out. What drew me was the incredible musicianship, it is so awesome…. Note to self I need to get back into this band because I fell off after Train of Thought. Personal reasons 18. SLAAAAAAAYYYYYEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!! - Divine Intervention (1994), I’ve heard Slayer for years due to my cousins once again before this album came out, but for some odd reason this album spoke to me and I actually do go back to this album quite a bit. Songs like Dittohead, Killing Fields, Circle of Beliefs are still catchy, they sometimes will come to me as an itch and I need to hear them to cure it. Overall these days it’s a middle of the road for me 19. Savatage - Handful of Rain (1994), I like this album a lot, one because Alex Skolnick plays on it, and he’s one of my favorite guitarists of all time, also I am one of those that like Zach’s vocals. He was a great replacement for Jon when he decided to write songs for the band and be the behind the curtains type of guy. 20. Soulfly - S/t (1998), this came out a couple of months before the end of my junior year in HS. I was happy to hear Max again with this new band. I don’t own any Soulfly anymore, but I will listen to this from time to time on the Tube.

Not sure if I can do 20.... but I can definitely say Iron Maiden: Seventh son, even though I wasn't even a teen when I first heard it... But I can say Kill Em All, Rust in Peace, Reign In Blood(obviously), Legion by Deicide, Symbol of Salvation by Armoured Saint, 1916 by Motorhead, Sound Of White Noise by Anthrax.. and I'm gonna go there and say it, Metallica's Metallica album
