Hi, it's Kerri from Australia. All I want to say here today is that this guy is working so freaking hard to provide for his family and himself. I rent a one bedroom apartment upstairs with no yard, and I grow a mulberry tree, an orange tree, a lemon tree with a few herbs at my dads house 20 minute walk, or 5 minute bike ride away from my apartment. I like Shawn's principles so much about utilising and sharing. It makes perfect sense. I would love to own one or two acres to have my own place, but can only afford to rent, but dad has a quarter of an acre, so why not grow things there??? Seen as I am at his house looking after him 5 days out of 7, why not? I collect coffee beans for free at the local cafe, seaweed from the beach to put back into the poor soil here to try and improve it. Shawn has indirectly taught me a lot, and at 56 - I am still learning. I have seen some people's comments about their channel choice. It's easy to scroll on if you are not happy with either of his channels. This guy is a hard worker and a nice person, and he deserves all of the fruits of his hard work.

Hi Shawn, I just wanted to say hello after following you now for at least three years. I must admit, I do look forward to your weekly upload every Friday. Life is a constant state of change, so I do understand that you are branching out so to speak, but I do miss the "old" My Self Reliance. I loved, loved watching you build your homestead. You often say that you are not an expert carpenter or tradesman, however, in my personal, humble opinion, you do have excellent skills. I think you do a fantastic job, and all of your work is aesthetically pleasing. I watch a number of "outdoorsman/bushcraft" content and I find that I am often comparing what other people do to what you do. I know you are an incredibly busy man, however, I do hope that you continue to record "construction content" for the lack of a better term on My Self Reliance. Personally, that is what I enjoy most of all.

There is not much better of a wakeup call , than to have a Farm Jack smack you in the face. I had heard about the dangers but had done lots of lifting with them with no problem, then one day , I was tired and forgot to reset the jack went over and moved it slightly and caught it right in the side of the face, I reeled around like I was punch drunk for a few minutes out beside the house, trying to figure out what to do. I finally just sat down until my faculties came back.

First of all, i do not comment this with any bad intentions or with intentions of telling you what to do. Just want to make that very clear. But i hear " patreon" and although i fully understand that it's needed to pay for everything, please don't forget where you come from. Most of us got here because of the nice, silent working video's with occasionally some talking bits and the ever so pleasant to see Cali enjoying the outdoor life she has. Reason for saying this is that a lot of youtubers tend to forget that they are getting the views and likes because of how they started and because people who been watching their video's for a long time once they start with this patreon stuff. Less uploads on the channels that got them known to the audience, less quality content on the " free " channels etc. It's the downfall of many youtube channels once they start working with getting an extra buck out of their video's. Like i said, i absolutely understand that all of this costs money and also understand that youtube alone isn't going to cut it but please just keep in mind that those who watch this channel probably where there when it all started.
@kevinjo20414 ай бұрын
These you tubers live off their video income and now they start with the patreon crap. Give me a break. Your not working, your doing whatever you enjoy and getting paid by views. Pretty comfy I would say.

@@kevinjo2041Sir, a short time ago Canada came out w/some horrid new law about what social media they would allow shown to their citizens. They gave you tube "what for" about their expectations of "social culture". You tube refused to cooperate. I really dont know what this all means, but Shawn's been opening other venues, got a VPN, patreon, and I dont know what else, even a sponsor. I think it all has to do with that stupid law. I think he's been pressed on all sides and is really doing the very best he can for his family, and toward us.

Wow, I remember you telling us when you built the workshop that those squared-off logs you used for it were a lot heavier than the ones you used for your earlier cabin builds; and now you're lifting up the whole workshop you built from those extra-heavy logs all at once?! Having the right lifting tools really makes an enormous difference!
@MSjackiesaunders4 ай бұрын
Well, when he built with them originally, they probably still had some moisture content. They are a lot drier now. That means less weight. However, it is still a humongous undertaking! Building the new cabin was a huge undertaking, as well. Those tremendous logs were between 12 and 18 inches in diameter, not to mention at least twice as long in length! That was flat amazing to do with such simple building techniques!
