Ask any guitarist to name their top five guitar tones of all-time and chances are that Eric Clapton’s “Beano” tone is right there at the top of their list.
Now, ask them what you would need to replicate that magical tone, and you’re sure to faint from sticker shock when they tell you that you would need an original 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard and a 1962 Marshall JTM 45W Combo (now, affectionally known as the Bluesbreaker)-together, for well over $300K!
Well-they’re wrong…
What they would actually need is Eric’s left hand (possibly his right) and most definitely his entire soul to REALLY nail it-BUT, if we’re just talking about gear here, then we think we’ve put together some pretty impressive pairings of both guitars and amps (no matter what your budget) that will get you closer to the holy-grail of guitar tone than you’ve ever dreamt possible.

That budget rig sounds great. Nice playing! I don’t think Freddie King gets enough credit tbh. I’m glad you mentioned him. Everyone talks about Clapton but Clapton got his inspiration from King. Look up Freddie King “Let’s Dance Away and Hideaway” or “Texas Sensation”

Freddy was an awesome very precise player when he bent to a note he hit that note! No over bending… clapton took his phrasing from Freddie and his control of a loud guitar. Freddie was greatly influenced by horn players and played very loud. He was just cool dude lol big ol sideburns he had it all! Eric loved him hired him years later to open for him… eric really didn’t “steal” from those guys he paid tribute to them and expanded their audiences it’s a fine line

@@blucheer8743 the Bluesbreakers album features Freddie King’s most famous song but Clapton will happily take credit for it. I’d call that stolen!

You guys got a watch the new Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan documentary film it’s really good. It also has an interview where Eric Clapton talks about how he had Freddie King’s record and that’s why he went out and bought a Les Paul. Jimmie Vaughan also says that back in those days if you had a gig in Texas, you had to be able to play Freddy King because someone would always request Hide Away.

Never forget the first time I heard the Beano record..... I was a sophomore in highschool 1967..... Brooklyn Technical High School ..... Brooklyn, NY Great demo BTW I saw Duane Allman play three times before he passed.....he was ultimately my go to sound ....nothing like a Les Paul through a Marshall..... I have a Fender Supersonic I can get a great tone out of with my Les Paul

Excellent playing, you really have those Clapton licks down. Hit the front of that amp with an LPB-1 or something similar, roll down the tone knob all the way and crank it and you have a pretty good approximation of Clapton's famous "Woman Tone" from the Cream era. My ultimate tone is Freddie King's on the original recording of Going Down. I love B.B. and Albert but Freddie is definitely my favorite King.

He also used a vox tone bender. On double crossing time,you can hear him step on the pedal. You can hear the boost in gain if you really listen good. Tone bender was used by beck also.a 10 volt device that sustains without fuzz. I had to order one in 1967.

Excellent video. I also was surprised at how great the budget rig sounded! It's important, for beginners especially, to understand that they don't have to spend thousands for good sound. What I liked most was the absence of pedals and other extraneous equipment. It seems like fewer demos will give you just the sound of the guitar and amp.

The 1962 has the right cabinet vibration and acoustics. Very close. However Clapton was rumored to have used the middle on the Les Paul toggle position for these sessions so adjusting that aspect would have been a great idea. Good playing by the way.

Surprised that the SV20 got a little closer than the actual 1962. Maybe it’s to do with the 1962 having greenbacks vs period correct alnicos - doesn’t quite get the top end right. But they all sound great and great playing.

For anyone looking for some more middle of the road/ cheaper priced amps, check out the orange rocker head or combos! They have a great edge of break up tone on the gain channel and and it’s got power attention down to 0.5 watts so you can dime the clean channel and get a really great natural breakup at reasonable volumes (it’s just a single volume knob on the clean channel) and if you can stretch the budget more? Friedman dirty Shirley.

Yeah, I watched all of this now and the secret is turning down the volume knob on the guitar a bit and having the treble pick up tone down to around 7, depending on the individual guitar of course. This is the best explainer video on the Beano tone I've ever watched. Gil explains it best: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4rWZ4Kraq99qdU

Hi, one question to the SV20 - Do you really use the second Input (top right) and bass on 10? No eefects or anaything else done to the tone? I have nearly the same setup and it sounds absolutely flubby. Greetings

@waltgracevintage8620 Жыл бұрын
Hey! A lot of it has to do with volume, the more you push the amp the more distorted and flatter the frequencies get therefore the loose low end disappears. I'd suggest you pair it with an attenuator to get the same result at a quieter volume. Here's a link to our website where you can purchase the OX Top Box which is perfect for this purpose: waltgracevintage.com/products/universal-audio

@@waltgracevintage8620 Hey, i played on 20 watts without an attentuator, but theres is something missing. maybe it would sound different on recording, but in front of the box/in the room, the sound si not "hard" enough.
@rubievale
@rubievale 6 ай бұрын
@Filz321 The amp needs to be turned all the way up, dimed, and it needs a humbucker to hit it hard. A hard pick attack is helpful, too.

Doesn’t surprise me that the Epiphone and MG combo can do that tone that well. What that amp cannot do however, is Marshall edge of breakup tones. Crunch and higher gain tones aren’t that hard to replicate - look at all the Marshall in a box pedals that can do all the JCM800 sounds perfectly… But none of them can nail a good Hendrix Plexi clean /edge of breakup. The SV20 would beat them all for covering the widest range, and I think it even did a better Beano tone here than the actual Bluesbreaker.

Definitely don't get the MG15G. Any decent amp and decent alnico humbucker guitar (without a copper pickup cover like the Epiphone unfortunately) can do this. I would say Positive Grid Spark, Line 6 Catalyst, 100 watt Katana (not the 50) etc... This is light distortion sound, not a heavy one which requires a little better processing or it will sound fizzy.

Why do you have the bass on 10 on the Bluesbreaker? You literally have to turn it to zero without the amp completely farting out. Sounds nothing like the Beano tone.
