You said meat makes you vomit in a blurb. My daughter also will be physically sick if she eats meat. Since before she could talk she would refuse meat. Then had to have surgery from a blockage. From what I now think is forcing her to eat meat. That’s why we are vegan now, but I have never got medical answers as to why she gets so sick from meat. Was just wondering if you ever had or heard of a diagnosis of meat aversion. People literally won’t believe her and try to serve her meat anyway. It has become a lifestyle for more reasons than her aversion, but if they “trick” me I’ll be fine. She would be sick for weeks.

Wow, this is a very admirable way of seeing things. I myself was vegetarian since the age of 10, despite my whole family eating meat, and only did the switch to vegan a year ago at 23 when I got myself to watch dominion. I don’t cry easily but I teared up in the first 15 minutes, it was so devastating. I had to pause and watch it a week later with my boyfriend, just to have a person to talk to. I always pictured it “bad” but the reality traumatised me in a way. So I think it’s very beneficial to not having to watch this footage to do the step!

I got a pair of boots secondhand from a local vintage store. They’re comfortable, waterproof, warm, and I love how they look. According to the label inside, they’re made of sealskin. Obviously I would never EVER buy fur or leather or any kind of animal made into a fashion item from an original source where the money goes back into the hands of people who catch and kill these animals. But I find it hard to say that purchasing an item like that secondhand is a huge problem.

I wrestle with this issue as well. I'm not contributing money to the industry by picking up something second hand- but people can't tell they're second hand. If I looked good I might accidentally influence a fashion lover to buy the same item new, and thus contribute to animal exploitation. So while I think the sourcing is ethically neutrally, the impact of my advertising animal products to others may not be.

I think the thing with culture is that while its not a legitimate excuse, sometimes it can be very hard to go against it when your whole family/ everyone around you practises it, and something like food can be very emotional to them. It's not a good reason to not go vegan, but it can be a challenge, especially for younger people, to challenge their culture
@sisterursuline

Agree with this. Especially for migrant families, food is a very strong connection to culture and family or the country they left behind and is tied up with all kinds of emotions and other aspects of life. Many things can be veganised for sure. But I think without being part of a minority culture (as Swayze isn’t, as much as I respect and appreciate her work) it can be difficult to really understand.

Cultural reasons is sometimes a valid reason in countries where the society is very traditional. I remember my friend's cousin going vegan and her grandma got offended because she didnt eat the meat grandma cooked at the house (even after telling the whole house abt her not eating meat anymore) coz in her culture it comes across as ungrateful and disrespectful and everyone got angry at her for making grandma sad, just over meat. She's the daugher of the house so she doesnt really have a voice and she has to wear what's given and eat what's served and be grateful for it, and that's culture, unfortunately. I know it sounds petty but for some culture it's better to "follow" than to "offend" and it's hard to say that they're cowards for being followers, coz rebelling could mean they would get some sort of repercusion, ranging from having your whole house mad at you (which is exhausting mentally) to being kicked out of the house with no income and no means to survive.... Even for what we think as trivial things.

It's easy to dismiss the power of culture and food living in a Western society where individuality is prized over collectivism or community. In tight knit cultures, food plays a huge role in forming bonds and connection to family and relationships in a community. For instance, a family recipe handed down from generation to generation. Cultural or religious holidays that are identified with certain dishes. Identity and culture are real and positive factors especially for immigrants who need human connection to their people, their culture. It's probably the reason immigrants in America open restaurants catering to their own taste and anchor themselves in certain neighborhoods. I'm not saying an individual can't divorce themselves from their culture and their food, but it can very difficult especially if you're an immigrant from a tight knit culture with no support network outside of their ethnic enclave.

@iluv batzmaru It definitely isn't vegan, but it can be high welfare. It can be mutually beneficial, just the industrial beekeeping is not very good for bees. In many cases, they are just left to starve to death or gassed in winter because it's more profitable than heating/feeding or reducing the harvest. Community or home bee keeping is probably the only way we'll ever have humane bee farming under capitalism. I think it has the potential to be acceptable. In some cases necessary. Honey and especially (medical grade) manuka honey make excellent topical treatments and can even kill MRSA, something which common anti-biotics can't do. They don't contribute to anti-biotic resistance. As for the beeswax, well I have recently been using petroleum jelly after hearing about "slugging" on tiktok. I was averse to it because it is a petrochemical, but it seems to be non comedogenic and actually works well. I think beeswax has some additional anti-bacterial properties and it seems to slightly beat out vaseline, but it is more expensive and can be contaminated.

I think the conclusion I've come to is "culture" needs to be switched to "cultural pressures", since when people say they can't go vegan because of their "culture" (in a sincere way) they mean that it would create ostracization within their family or community that is persistent and affects their day to day. So they are stuck doing their best. I get both points and I just think two different conversations are happening. About parting your hair in the middle. It looks like you have a hair whirl in the front on the side, like I do. I can't part my hair in the middle because of this hair whirl. The hair would always stand up more on the side with the whirl. Most people have one hair whirl at the back of the head, that way it's much easier to part hair in the front. But you have one in the front or even multiple whirls like an abbyssian guinea pig.. That makes a lot of hair styles very difficult. ^^

To the argument regarding wearing hand-me-down leather or second hand leather - we would also have to consider, that wearing leather (no matter the way of aquisation) would inspire others to wear the same style as well - thus prompting them to buy new leather. i.e. leather jackets. hand-me-down whatsoever. Someone will think it looks cool and get themselves their own one. Buy it new, of course. That way we would be indirectly supporting the animal farming industry.

Re "Veganuary" etc.: Similar doubts are in the addiction recovery communities: Some people think that ONLY PERFECT abstinency is the way, (i.e. no methadone treatment for heroin addicts), while other belive in reducing harm. I have to say that form me the latter is way EASIER and more accessible for a lot more people and also CAN BE a great first step. Expecting perfection usually leads to disappointment and SOME GOOD is better then none. Yes, I understand that it can lead to laziness and sense of complacancy, but I still belive the outcome is positive.

I've seen (very rarely) vegans that attack indiginous people for hunting for food. While I don't agree with hunting in general, I don't think it is productive to 'harass' these people, especially when the the majority of animal harm comes from factory production. Attacking some cultural groups then seems more like virtue signaling than real activism. I also don't hold it against people that are mainly vegan but at certain cultural celebrations consume animal products, it is not ideal but they still produce less harm on average.

I'm still not quite a vegan (someday!) but yeah going vegetarian actually cured my anemia because supplementing the way a vegetarian should treated my hereditary iron issues.

In close knit communities it can be very hard to be vegan, some cultures and people are very intolerant of anything that is different to what they consider normal. If you refuse to eat any non vegan foods offered to you at gatherings, you can seriously offend the people around you, making everyday life very hard. You also cannot just stop attending social/ family gatherings to avoid having to not eat people's food, as that can in itself offend. Add to that the "crazy vegan" stereotype that many think of when you say vegan and you are setting yourself up for a really hard time, especially if you have no way of getting out of that community. Think about trying to find a job in a small town or community where you are the "crazy offensive" person. Also, just leaving that community may not be an option for everyone, as you would probably be leaving behind most of you family and friends. I don't think culture is a defence against going vegan, but for some it can be a serious barrier. Cultures will change in time, as they do, but getting to the point where veganism is normal and easy is going to take some time.

I’m not a vegan, but I’m working towards lessening my meat consumption (I’m from the Deep South and damn was I raised to love meat) But, something I’ve noticed in the beauty industry is that vegan makeup is tbh hella boring. So many vegan brands only make minimalistic makeup or just skincare And although a lot of vegans seem to like that, so many people want pretty colors and shade ranges and so many mainstream vegan brands just don’t do that. Like KVD and ELF have some pretty stuff but it’s so hard to show vegans anything fun. Smaller indie brands have that but in a more big box style makeup setting, it’s such a problem

I wrote this as an awnser to someone else's comment, but I think it fits very well in general for the cultural argument: "This is deffinitely a very difficult topic. The thing is that culture should never be righteous. Otherwise I as a twenty year old woman probably wouldn't be able to write this comment, I'd rather stay in the kitchen and would cook for my working husband and my two children. This was also a part oft many cultures once. I know this topic is absolutely sensitive because as you said, culture defines people and groups. But while culture is most likely seen as something that stands still or moves just slowly it actually changes fast. Equality of men and women is a pretty good example. Globalization has a big impact on all cultures, allthough Western Culture really takes the lead which is critical like you metioned. But I think we need to separate into two different discussions here: One that is about Culture as a construct oft creating identity and that critiques the massive influence of the West in terms of contributing to reducing cultural diversity and another one that discusses the borders between Culture and Right. I know that they are not allways easy to seperate because the transitions of these two often run into one another. The talk about that is still important, especially in a world of Globalization. Culture and cultural diversity is important and precious, but it should never equal Right."

I am concerned how few if ANY KZbin vegans ever address food deserts, social justice issues, homelessness etc. If one is limited income, hungry or homeless the flippant statement that any one can be vegan can come off as insensitive and ignorant and give the impression that all vegans are privileged and uncaring.

If people want to victimize themselves they're free to do so, no one can judge you if you don't present excuses for yourself. If I couldn't then that's fine but I'm not going to blame other people's activism for making me feel guilty. Bottom line: going vegan is the best thing you can do in your general lifestyle to help the animals and the environment. The cultural argument was probably meant to only include ethnic cultures specifically and keep white western culture on higher standard due to historic oppression of these ethnic cultures. In this framework trying to impose moral framework of veganism on these ethnic cultures is just an extension of colonialism and thus inherently immoral. This argument however is extremely vapid as it puts cultural sensibilities of certain groups above the physical abuse these animals suffer from. The animal does not care about the cultural or ethnic background of the person harming it. Suffering is suffering no matter who inflicts it.
